“An experience unlike any other”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

It has taken me a while to write up the reviews from our Africa trip, but if there's one camp / lodge I remember, its Sasaab. Everything here was perfect - the accommodations (each cottage with a private plunge pool), the meals, the guides, the service, the sun-downers, the dik-diks welcoming us home every evening - it was all one would expect from a five star establishment, and then some.

And then there were our hosts, Doug and Tanya. I don't have words to describe their thoughtfulness, their generosity, their passion - I could go on and on. Within five minutes of our arrival at Sasaab, we felt that we had known them forever, like we were meeting old friends. Their zest for life is infectious, and we consider ourselves lucky to have had an opportunity to share their house, life and laughter for three days!

I am not going to repeat the reviews of the exquisite accommodations and services described on this site; others have done a better job at it than I can. All I will say is that we went to Sasaab based on the reviews, but will go back to meet Doug and Tanya. In fact, I will go to any property managed by them - they will make any destination worth the trip!

My daughter and I came here after a long and tiring series of flights from the US via London, to find the most lovely and welcoming lodge imaginable. The hosts, Ron and Margaret, could not have done more to make our visit extraordinary. This Samburu area of Kenya is fascinating and I believe that any traveler to this country should consider this a MUST visit. Although it's a very big journey to get to Sasaab from western Wyoming, I hope very much for a repeat visit, it's that special. Many thanks to Ron and Margaret for ensuring that our visit was perfect in every way!

Room Tip: It's difficult to fill out the TA forms because they don't apply to this lodge, which is loc...

We are delighted that you and your daughter had such a lovely time during your stay with us at Sasaab in February. Thank you for sharing your experience and for the kind words about your stay. They are especially impactful coming from the two of you since we know you run a successful tour operation in Wyoming. We do hope you are able to return to Kenya and visit Sasaab again soon.

Very hot but comfortable trip at Sasaab, Samburu and I dare you to try the plunge pool in your room, it was freezing even in the hot mid-day! We managed to complete the Samburu Special Five the first day, thanks to our guides, Michael and Samuel. The food was excellent so it was difficult for me to cut down on meals! Thanks to the great hosts, Ron and Margaret. The Samburu culture was interesting and we witnessed the warrior dance and a special ceremony. The camel ride to the sundowner was so romantic! Don't forget to learn about their various programmes to help the local community!

My family and I have just returned from a 2 week safari with Specialised Safaris and we spent our first several days here at Sasaab Lodge !!
The accommodations were perfect and the staff were incredible at every turn. We were treated so well in fact that when they knew my son's birthday was happening during our stay, they surprised him with a wonderful birthday cake and celebration !
The food was delicious at every meal and the presentation was superb !!
I will definitely be coming back here !!

Room Tip: All of our rooms were wonderful !

I just took my 11 year old grandaughter on her dream trip to Kenya. I've been to Kenya 3 times in the last 5 years. I always feel comfortable when I am there: safe and well cared for, even though there are sometimes travel advisories.

We got to spend 5 days at Sasaab which is a super long time in any camp. I just wanted my granddaughter to get to know one place well which means we got to see more of the social responsibility side of the camp. We spent a morning at the local school that Sasaab sponsors and makes possible.

It is rough to see conditions these kids are living under, especially the girls, but it was heartening to see how Sasaab cares about these Samburu kids.

Here's what we loved about the camp: the place, the design, the people, the animals, the close proximity to villages, Margaret's precision and thoughtfulness, Ron's big heart, the food, the other guests, the swimming pool and the individual dipping pools, the guides and chui. We finally saw a leopard!

Margaret and Ron are the excellent hosts-managers of this extraordinary, beautiful and luxurious safari retreat in Samburu. We were assigned the Honeymoon tent, which was very special, although calling this dwelling with its own plunge pool a "tent" is like calling a Maserati "transportation". Elephants visible on the river below our tent.

Our drivers/guides/spotters were Michael and Eric and they must be among the best in the business. In this drier climate, the animals are harder to spot. They found us lots of them to ogle and photograph. The bush breakfast they cooked up one morning was a highlight: eggs, bacon, pancakes, fruit, coffee.....and a herd of elephants coming to join us on the riverbank.

The only aspect that was less than perfect was that it is quite a drive to the area of Samburu park that holds game. Perhaps an hour each way. This may have been due to drought conditions that shrunk the ranges of the wildlife. But once there, we saw everything from lion to leopard to elephant.

It is also a fair drive from the main airstrip serving the camp, perhaps an hour and a half. However, on the way out Safarilink unexpectedly picked us up from the local strip, a mere 10 minutes away. Worth investigating whether that option is available.

The dining is elegant and amazingly fresh. We are from California, so fresh fruit and veggies are important. I loved that they have their own garden out back growing butternut squash and French string beans. Where they got the rest of it in such a remote area remains a mystery.

Finally, the massage from Lillian in the spa was an almost religious experience. And, yes, you're on a real safari, but they also have a spa. Just relax and accept it.

Have just had the most amazing time at Sasaab. The lodge blends so well with the surroundings but internally has the most amazing Morrocan design. Glamping is a complete understatement! Margaret and Ron were the most welcoming hosts, treating us to a sundowner on leopard rock where we watched the sun set on the beautiful Samburu, a night dining under the stars plus meeting the riveting Shivani who has spent 12 years studying the lions in the area. We were in the honeymoon suite overlooking the river bend and every morning we saw the elephants crossing it.The swimming pool was a magical place to watch them from too.The whole ambience of the place and the staff made this a stay I wont forget!

Room Tip: Honeymoon suite had the most amazing views and a very gentle breeze to cool in the evenings which wa...
