The Samburu Intrepids is located in a lovely spot on the river. After an amazing long drive through beautiful Kenya, you have to stop in Isiolo and "sign in"- a security measure. This starts to make you nervous as you are heading towards the North of Kenya on the road, or in the ditch beside the road, which is actually better for driving, which is notorious for banditry North of Samburu. We arrived at the Intrepids are were greeted with lovely welcome and....should you hear gunshots at night, do not be alarmed as we have to frighten away the elephants occaisonally from eating our vegetation. This was slightly alarming. Samburu was in drought and yet there were no water restrictions placed on us. The animals were very plentiful in the area as there was still a bit of water. The staff were amazing especially with our kids. It can be difficult for kids travelling on safaris as there are few places to excercise/run your sillies out and you are constantly being told to be quiet. But this hotel was excellent for that. Food was amazing- fresh, vegetarian options, not overly salty. Rooms were great, very comfortable. If I were on a honeymoon or had done a few safaris before, maybe I would stay somewhere else, but a sophisticated camp that is very very comfortable.

The Intrepids was our first camp on a 2 week safari through Kenya and Tanzania and it was the perfect beginning to the adventure of a lifetime. After finally arriving at the Intrepids, you are greeted with warm smiles and excellent service. A hot towel to wipe your face and a cool drink to relax. The tents are beautiful and the food was great! Each night there is a presentation by a local Samburu tribesman (we had Francis - such a delight to get to learn about him and his way of life), as well as a dance. Simply gorgeous and a wonderful tented camp.

Samburu itself is amazing - we saw so many elephants, giraffes, blue monkeys, baboons and warthogs. Also managed to see some lion after a kill, as well as the rare Grevy's zebra.

This was our first safari - a long held ambition finally realised. We could not fault anything at Samburu Intrepids. The tent was luxurious and clean, the setting was beautiful, monkeys and other occasional camp vistors were charming, and the food was superb. Sorry again to the staff that we could not finish all our meals - no reflection on the quality - more to do with the quantities!.
All the staff were warm, welcoming and friendly, and quick to laugh and joke with us. It's difficult to name names as everyone was so nice, but we have to say thanks to Jelly for being a great guide - we saw so many wonderful animals and with Jelly's skill we never felt we were intruding or hassling the animals, despite being able to see so much at close range. Josphat our waiter - watch out for his occasional teasing - he kept catching us out! Francis the naturalist is a great character and it was so good to know that the people like him and Jelly who see these incredible sights every day still get as much of a thrill as we first-timers do. We used to have a "never go back" rule for holidays, however much we enjoy them, as there are so many other places to visit, but we are confident that we will be making a return trip here as soon as we can.

Room Tip: All rooms I'm sure are really nice

Luxurious tented accommodation over looking the Uasa Nyira River, all mod cons, electricity in all tents ( No power after 12 o'clock at night) but flash lights are available should you need them.

The tents are spacious, with a four poster bed, plenty of storage space, a walk in shower, double hand basins and toilet.

Note from my Wife for the ladies NO hair driers so if you need one take it with you.

Hot drinks brought to your tent when you get your 06:00am wake up call in readiness for the day's Safari.

We would like to thank our driver Jelly for a superb Safari and of course all other staff members for making our stay a memorable one.

Hope to see you all again in the not to distant future.

Room Tip: They are all luxurious tents where ever they are positioned

We stayed at this camp in January 2012 and really enjoyed it. The meals and accommodation were great and we loved the talks by Francis and the guided nature walk. Also, everyone was very helpful. Would love to go back again!

We have visited Kenya many times and done lots of safaris . This is definitely the most luxurious place we have stayed. The tents are spacious, with a four poster bed, plenty of storage space, a walk in shower, double hand basins and toilet. You have to be careful to close the tent up whenever you leave, to keep out the vervet monkeys, who apparently have mastered zips.

Meals are taken in a central wooden, open sided building. The food was excellent: buffet breakfast with everything you could possibly want including my favourite of lots of tropical fruit, lunch is also a buffet, including delicious vegetarian curries, dinner is a 5 course a la carte menu - a bit over the top for us, we settled for a main and pud.

The staff were charming and helpful. I took a nature walk with a Samburu warrior, accompanied by a lodge assistant and an armed guard, which I would definitely recommend. The swimming pool was a reasonable size for a decent swim.

Of course there are lots of animals to see: many elephants, giraffes, oryx, gerenuk, waterbuck, mpala, dik dik, ground squirrels, etc. Lots of birds.
