“Great Samburu Camp”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2014

My wife and I spent 2 nights at the Elephant Bedroom Camp as part of a monthlong African Safari in October of 2013. The Elephant Bedroom was awesome... the location was perfect, right along the river and the elephants really did come through the camp at night... to the point that they required you to have an escort while coming and going to your room after dark. The game drives were spectacular in the Samburu Reserve, and our guide (Julius) was wonderful... knowledgeable and respectful, and really helped make this part of the trip incredibly memorable. The rooms were quite comfortable and very clean.. double beds with mosquito netting, warm showers, and flushing toilets in the rooms. There is no air conditioning, and bear in mind that it gets HOT there during the day (usually an afternoon siesta since there's not much game active in the heat of the day). There were small wading pools on the porch cool off in, and the bungalows were elevated about 15 feet off of the ground. It all made for an enchanting stay, and the food was certainly well above average... especially considering where you are and the beer/wine was very reasonable in price and readily available. Definitely a great experience, and strongly recommended.

Now this I like. The camp is on an excellent location along the Iwaso Nyiro river, the tents are some of the most luxurious I have had the pleasure to holiday in and their size, oho...Each tent has a plunge pool to cool you off after the heat and dust of a game drive, hot water is available though out the day for showers, the food is great and there is definitely a feeling of a true authentic safari. This camp has no fence and therefore the elephants march right through, whenever they want but the staff is vigilant and one always feels safe. I would go back again and again and again.

Situated about 850KM from Diani Beach,a Safari to Samburu National Reserve can only be done sensibly from the coastal town of Mombasa in the following ways;
1..Combine with a Safari to Tsavo or Amboseli Parks or both.
2..Start the Safari from Nairobi.(cheaper)...
The location of the park is superb..dry and arid most of the time hence game viewing is easier as the terrain is ideal ...plenty of game to be seen easily..lions,leopards,herds of elephants,buffaloes,giraffes,hyenas,plenty of bird species etc..
Campsites are located along the river with the occasional menace of baboons and velvet monkeys,water bucks,crocodiles among other wild animals..
One of the best places to view wild animals.

This is an excellent camp with very attentive staff, the food is wonderful, the best we've had at the various camps we've stayed at. If you love elephants this is definitely the place to be, with many very close encounters within the camp itself, wonderful experience. The game viewing is however more difficult than other areas, saw 2 lions after much searching, one walked straight passed the car but no other big cats. Plunge pool is a welcome relief from the intense heat and each tent has 2 double beds, very roomy. All in all a wonderful camp that we would return to, the elephants and the food are definitely the highlights.

Room Tip: Tent 4 and 5 were good for the elephant encounters, especially tent 4 which is next to the restauran...

Absolute best luxury safari tent lodge in Samburu.
Elephant Bedroom is appropriately named. There were elephants around camp morning noon and night. Rangers and guards kept us safe at all times, escorting us to and from our tent. Joseph is a warm and hospitable manager - the best I've seen in my 10 months in Africa. The chef is excellent, wine selection is superb, views are unbeatable, accommodation is romantic, spacious, and beautifully appointed. Breakfast and lunch by the river, while dinner is served on the large deck above. Our favorite features wer the plunge pool set into the deck outside out elevated tent, the robes made from Samburu fabric, and the place mats made out of beaded necklaces. It was like a dream to sit in the cool water during the late afternoon while watching baby elephants play in the river in the river. LOTS of baby elephants at the moment! Many leopard, several lioness with cubs. Sightings are not crowded with other vehicles as they are in some of Kenya's other name parks. Can't say enough about this place. The service and ambiance are just excellent.

Room Tip: We stayed in #12 at the end which was lovely for the seclusion and view of river and elephants. #8 i...

This is a beautiful camp, right on the river, with elephants and giraffes across the way as you eat breakfast or lunch on the riverbank. The plunge pool is a great idea. Tents are roomy and very comfortable, and the food was very good with a great selection of dishes.

Our guide Anthony was wonderful, and definitely one of our favorite guides during our African trip. We saw lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, baboons, and even a leopard. We also loved the Samburu landscape; even though it's harder to see animals here than in the Mara, it's much more interesting. We actually wish we'd spent more time in Samburu and less in Mara.

Because of the rains when I was in camp in November we were not lucky enough to see any visiting elephants but we could see them on the banks of the river. I have stayed in several safari camps in Kenya but Elephant bedroom offered the biggest tent I have ever seen. The staff were friendly and courteous and the food was excellent. Game drives were professionally conducted and I would definitely return to Elephant Bedroom and recommend it to my friends.

Room Tip: All tents are extremely comfortable and have good views
