Hotel Relais du Masoala

Monique's place (and Monique) is charming and was a magical spot from which to start the real "en brousse" part of my Madagascar trip far from Tana. Monique and Denise warmly welcomed our small group with comfortable accommodations, good meals, suggestions on when to go out and see the local people fishing in the mornings, and interesting insights about the area and country. Le Relais du Masoala is a good base from which to visit Nosy Mangabe and the entire area.

Due to flight problems we arrived in Maroantsetra late afternoon with no local currency and minus my suitcase. Monique, the hotel owner, was amazing! She took me shopping to buy some clothes and essentials - with only 30 minutes shopping time she insisted that the stores would not overcharge me, because we were tourists. Monique changed some Euros into Ariary and also gave me a hairbrush and swimming costume (for use at Masoala Forest Lodge, our next destination). Monique helped to ease an otherwise, distressing situation which made the start of our holiday so much better. I can't praise Monique enough and it's this type of care and service for customers that makes this lodgestand out from all others. The staff are well trained - very friendly and helpful. The lodge is excellent with very comfortable lodges in beautiful landscaped gardens - do take a walk along the beach at sunrise and see the locals fishing. The food is excellent, especially the Madagascar king prawns. A very enjoyable stay and highly recommended.

Room Tip: All lodges have privacy and patio.

Relais du Masoala is a stunning lodge with well-appointed cabins and great food. The zebu skewers at dinner were outstanding. Monique, the owner, accompanied us on excursions, planned surprise picnics for us, chose the best guides, and entertained us as if we were her personal guests. I had a memorable 2-night stay there and give it 5 stars for accommodations, food, eco-tourism, and friendliness.

On my way to Nosy Manga Be, I stayed one night here and, for the Madagascar standard,
this is a good place.
This is probably the best option in Maroansetra; the bungalow are pretty old, but very clean and well preserved (being near the sea, it's not easy).
The staff is very nice and you can have a good dinner here and a really good coffe!

My husband and I stayed here for three nights in total. One night on arrival in Maroanstetra and two nights after having been to the Masoala Peninsula. We had originally been booked into the Coco Beach Hotel (which was not at all to the standard that was expected). After a very quick look around Coco Beach we decided to move hotels and called the Relais and spoke to Monique who advised that they had availability and would be very pleased to welcome us. It was like a breath of fresh air after Coco Beach. The thatched huts are large and very comfortable with two queen beds, large bathroom and verandah surrounding three sides of the hut. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the location on the river is quite lovely.

But the assistance that we received from Monique was outstanding. After our experience at Coco Beach she suggested different hotels for the remainder of our time in Madagascar and she was absolutely spot on. She and her staff also assisted us with sending emails to our local agent in Tana to make this happen. I know that had we not met Monique our holiday experience in Madagascar would have been a very different one to what we had.

I cannot rate Monique and her hotel highly enough. If you're intending a visit to Maroantsetra I would stay nowhere else.

Room Tip: From what we could see all rooms are on a par

Having spent some time wildlife spotting and snorkelling, we wanted a luxurious ending to our honeymoon, but were unable to find satisfactory connecting flights to Ile Sainte Marie and then back to Tana. So we compromised and decided to stay where we were (Maroantsetra, back from Masoala and Nosy Mangabe) but upgrade our hotel. The best in the area, our guidebook told us, was this one. How right our guidebook was!

Fortunately we had the place to ourselves, but frankly, we were overcome with gratitude for the quality of accommodation, food, service, and situation. Beautifully appointed bungalows with HOT SHOWERS!!

We loved it and decided to take it immediately on seeing our room. After a couple of days we asked how much it was, and we were once again pleasantly surprised.

Go there, it's lovely.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
At the top of Antongil Bay on the north-east coast of Madagascar, in the heart of the clove and vanilla growing region of the island, the Relais is a collection of 15 well-appointed Malagasy-style bungalows (with American comfort levels) scattered in an expansive lush coconut grove. A narrow causeway separates the Relais from the natural wild sandy beach along the Bay overlooking the island reserve of Mangabe. Gently bathed by the trade winds, the graceful and peaceful property lies a few minutes west of the center of Maroantsetra, the gateway to Masoala, Makira, Farankaraina and Nosy Mangabe. The Relais now has a satellite eco-lodge at the very edge of Masoala National Park. Indeed, the Petit Relais is a collection of just 6 bungalows nestled into the hillock known locally as "Lohatrozona" (literally, the "head of the whale"), where twenty pristine hectares of primary coastal tropical forest await you. The Petit Relais is discreetly set just behind a mile-long private beach of golden sand extending along Tampolo Marine Park from the village of Ambodiforaha to the South up to the very entrance to Masoala National Park to the North. ... more   less
