“Nice Hotel - Great food”
Reviewed 30 January 2014

Stayed for one day in January 2014. Nice pool and nice beach (just be wary about the swimming in the Lake!, do your reserach in advance). Food was particularly good and would definitely recommend. I had the fillet mignon and it was one of the best I have tasted - superb. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. The local band that entertained during meal times were excellent and a lovely touch. We stayed here having transferred for one day from Lilongwe and this was done without any trouble whatsoever. Would wholeheartedly recommend for a change of scene if your agenda allows..

Stayed here for two nights in late december. Hotel rooms are fairly basic but adequate with good aircon and small outside seating area. Pool is great and easy access to the lake. Food was good both from the buffet and a la carte. Staff and Nedson, the manager, very helpful. I'd definitely stay here again.

I stayed at the Sunbird Livingstonia Beach for 5 nights while attending a business workshop. The location is beautiful but the hotel itself is just ok. The rooms are very simple. I stayed in either a standard or superior room which was very simple - a queen sized bed, an old television, a small desk and chair and a pretty large but basic bathroom. I saw a colleagues delux room and while it was a bit larger and was in a free standing bungalow, it didn't offer much more than my room. The hotel is quite far from town so I ate every meal on the hotel grounds. Breakfast was never filling. It offered coffee, tea, fruit, some meats, eggs, cereals and juice. Our lunches were buffet as a part of the workshop and were probably the best meal offering several protein options. The a la carte dinners were pretty expensive for what you received. The meeting room and meeting services (coffee breaks, buffet lunches, water, projector, etc.) were pretty good. I think the workshop organizers were pleased. Other workshop attendees took advantage of the beaches and went for swims though it was a cooler time of year. I didn't see any of the other lodges in this area but heard there are other smaller options that might be nicer. I likely wouldn't travel to Salima and stay here again if not for work.

Room Tip: I'd probably choose to stay closer to the lobby area where there is more light. My room was at t...

I had the very fortunate experience of staying here on a work trip recently. By Malawi standards the hotel is beyond the dreams of the majority of the population - on the edge of Lake Malawi, red moon rising most nights, monkeys on the roof of the reception building, G&T on the beach - what more could we ask for? Staff are very attentive and friendly. Food is great - avoid the buffet, the a la carte offers better value. Inevitably there are some problems with water pressure in the showers on occasions - this is Africa! Happily the pluses outweigh the negatives by a mile. I'd go back in a minute!

Great hotel on the shores of Lake Malawi. Safe secure and access to very clean private beach. Good pool and restaurant. Looking forward to visiting again. Rooms all have mosquito nets, and room safes. Staff are helpful and friendly.

It is untouched and feels like we were transported back in time to colonial Africa. The location is beautiful and the lake a must see, however this place is best as a day visit. It has a lovely pool and the beach is well maintained, however there is no activity, a very limited menu and it is expensive. There are a lot of staff and the grounds and rooms are well maintained. If you planning a trip to the lake, I would suggest plan this as a day trip and stay somewhere further south.

We first stayed here in 1970, when it was called Grand Beach Hotel. Physically, it has hardly changed: beautiful location on Lake Malawi, with basic but pleasant rooms. However, it is now more of a conference centre for hungry civil servants than a family hotel. During our recent stay, each day dozens of them engaged in a food frenzy every few hours! Paying guests receive little attention and have to compete for poolside chairs, etc. The food ranges from poor to average. The other factor which has changed is the price: US$190 per day for a standard room! This is absolutely extortionate, especially when compared with US$96 per night at the far superior Makokola Retreat, Mangochi,, owned by the same company.
