“Lovely meal in the most unusual setting ever”
Reviewed 28 June 2013

During a volunteering trip to Salima, we had a meal at the Safari Beach Lodge in the lakeside bar - the hotel itself is at the top of steep cliffs which run down to Lake Malawi and steps have been cut into the cliffs to take you right down to a bar which is actually a platform over the lake - it was beautiful down there and the meal itself was fine too. Need to be careful though - one of our party lost his footing near the pool on the way down to the bar - could do with better lighting there, I think.

Other than an unpleasant encounter with the South African manager who doesn't seem to understand customer service or courtesy, I had a pleasant stay. The Malawian staff are pleasant, kind, and courteous, the food is good, the views are nice, and the beds are clean and fitted with mosquito nets which are a necessity on the Salima lake coast. The highlight was spotting the Rock Hyrax that hide out in the rocks and on the roofs of the huts.

Room Tip: Some of the huts have an outdoor bathroom which might not work for most - definitely not for women o...

We were disappointed with our stay here. We had visited previously, without spending the night, and thought it seemed so lovely: the platform bar is a great spot to spend a few hours enjoying the view of the lake and a cocktail or two, the small but cute beach nooks for sitting, and the cabins looked like cozy places to stay with great views.
We were really disapoointed, then, when we stayed overnight. The gazebos were dirty and in poor repair; our bathroom was covered floor to ceiling in thick cobwebs; the food was fine but expensive compared to what you get at the other places nearby, and baboons had taken over the place, blocking our path back to the gazebos. It seems like this used to be a great place but could use some fixing up if it is to be worth the money.

First visit to Malawi and Safari Beach Lodge made it an unforgettable time! Even got engaged there! :) Friendly staff and great service! Awesome to wake up with Fish Eagles calling in the morning near our room!

Just returned from a wonderfully relaxing 6 days at this lodge. Very friendly staff, stunning location, and the baboons kept us endlessly entertained. Cocktails in the sundowner bar right by the sea with the manager on our last evening was a memorable event.

Can't recommend this lodge highly enough.

We spent a night at this place on 7th November 2012, on our honeymoon week, the place is very nice and very good scenery as well, as much as it is expensive, i wouldn't mind spending another day on our anniversary every year just to treat my wife.

The meals were very good as well, we had some kebabs and they were cooked nicely that I saw my wife finish off her meal from her plate.

Room Tip: Room one is probably the one which we slept in and is not located in the bushes

The view of the lake is lovely. The staff are friendly and polite. Their rooms and chalets are available at the same price, $110 (for a single). I stayed in one of the rooms, and the room was slightly above basic. It had air conditioning, dstv, and hot water in the sink, but not in the shower. The shower had a slick and sloped concrete floor, which seemed less than ideal. The room had a good bednet, a wicker sofa with some basic cushions, and a small veranda with a pretty view. It was an adequate place to stay, but I feel like it was much too expensive for what it had to offer.
