“Great location, lovely open fire!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014

We stayed at this comfortable hotel after a long walk around the mountain. We had lovely tea in the gardens(great views, birds etc) and a pleasant supper by the roaring fire. We were thrilled to have an open fire in our room too which was a first for me in any hotel and welcome as the august nights are chilly at this height. All the staff were helpful and friendly nd the breakfast outstanding. Staff willingly brought ti all out for us to enjoy in the lobely sunny gardens.

Room Tip: ask for one that overlooks the gardens

I was there in December 2013, part of a two-week trip to Malawi.
Of course, one cannot judge hotels in Malawi by the same criteria as those in Europe or North America. Taking this into consideration, I must say the Ku Chawe was quite a nice place with a magnificent location.
The Zomba plateau has very interesting sights, which can be reached on foot from the hotel, including the famous Emperor's view. It can be quite cool up there, and while December is during their summer, I remember freezing at the Emperor's view due to strong winds.

The rooms are pretty spacious and well lit with large windows. Some have a nice view. Be mindful of the (large) insects, if you get a garden level room.

The food was pretty standard but adequate.
If you go to Zomba, do visit the City market which is really 'different' and amazing.

I've stayed at this hotel a number of times, and the improvements in service, cleanliness, and food quality are paying off. The staff are attentive and friendly, the food is substantially better than it used to be, and you really can't beat the location. The views are simply stunning.

Located on top of the Zomba plateau this hotel has stunning views of the distant plains.

The room was very big with a comfortable bed. There was a fireplace in the room, which the staff offered to lid.

The food was very good, especially the breakfast. The staff was helpful and friendly.

There is a lot to do, like exploring the plateau on food, bicycle or horse. We took a local guide for USD 20 per day and hiked around the plateau for nearly 7 hours.

A heck of a location - so high up and such magnificent views! Even though it's so high up the temperature mid afternoon was pleasant. When clouds passed over it meant donning a cardigan though otherwise it was T-shirt only weather. The views afforded were second to none and the gardens both extensive and extremely well kept. The lunch was simply delicious as was the coppery coloured tea that accompanied it.

I wasn't expecting much based on previous reviews, however on arrival I was pleasantly surprised. The views as you drive up is stunning, the hotel and grounds lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful for Malawi standards. We ate at lunc and ordered burgers which took an hour to arrive, this is average for Malawi. The evening wecided to have the buffet as it would be quicker, the choice was average but nice. Breakfast was a good selection and with the added entertainment of the monkeys trying to get into the restaurant. The room pleasant though tired in places, but again better than expected. We took the organised tour up to the plateau, extremely bumpy the roads were pretty bad, do not take your own car, tour took 2 hours. Worth it for the stunning views. Yes this hotel is expensive, Malawi hotels are. Saying all that we would come again.
