“totally pleasurable and relaxing holiday in supberb location”
Reviewed 7 February 2010

We have just returned from Langkawi after spending 7 nights at the Holiday Villa and Spa Resort. I can only agree with some of the comments made in previous reviews that the hotel might well benefit from some updating and improvement, especially in their bedroom furniture and fittings. We thought that the accommodation was adequate; it was clean and comfortable, but because of the resort’s policy of maintaining a “greening” environment, areas were poorly illuminated. This created problems when accessing the room safe located in the wardrobe, as there was insufficient light in the evening to select your security code.
The rooms are provided with tea/coffee making facilities, but as one previous reviewer pointed out, you will need to provide your own supplies after the first day. Wireless broadband is accessible through Reception for 16 ringits ($5) for one hour or 30 ringits ($10) for 24 hrs. Taxis were on hand and were summoned by the porters. Fares were inexpensive, ie 7 ringits for drops to the local duty-free stores and nearby Cenang restaurants. The taxi fare between the airport and hotel was a flat fare of 20 ringits for two people travelling, or 30 ringits for four.
The buffet breakfast provided in the restaurant compared favourably to other hotel restaurant meals in Asia and there was a good range of fruits, cereals and the usual hot dishes. The restaurant staff were pleasant and attentative, as were the housekeeping and room maids.
Our relatives did not have breakfast included in their package, so each day walked across the road to Cactus Restaurant where they consumed a huge full English breakfast for 18 ringits (Au$6). They were more than pleased with this and thought the breakfast was excellent.
Despite an initial impression of lack of warmth by the receptionist staff at check-in, on each occasion that we needed assistance for additional or replacement of faulty equipment, our requests were met with prompt attention. However, when trying to glean information not relating to the hotel, the staff seemed to be ill-equipped and disinterested in providing this. We weren’t sure whether this was a matter of not having sufficient training or a lack of interest in searching the information out, ie providing a local telephone no appeared to be beyond their remit.
Despite these minor points, the hotel’s outstanding location far outweighs any deficiencies. The hotel pool is an outstanding feature; it has an inpool bar, spa and children’s pool. The grassed area beyond provides welcome shade during the afternoon heat and the white sandy beach is stunning.
The pool and beach cafes provided tasty light meals, an extensive list of cocktails, soft drinks and beers, also tea and coffee. The beach café is well located, providing good shade for diners to enjoy their refreshments in a casual style.
In summary, the Holiday Villa Resort is well worthwhile a visit as its superb location far outweighs any minor deficiencies it may have, especially when comparing the cost of rooms at other resorts in the area. We hired a car and toured around the island, looking at other resorts that we had considered, but they were not situated in such an outstanding location.

My husband and I have just spent 10 days at Holiday Villa. It was everything we had hoped for and more (thanks to some not so favourable reviews).
We read about a dimly lit, awful lobby... in fact, it was well lit (unless you want it lit up like a hospital), was beautifully decorated, and had a real charm to it.
We read about dirty rooms... ours was very clean, no mosquito's or evidence of rodents, comfortable big bed, good air conditioning, good TV, nice bathroom, plenty of space.
We read about unfriendly staff... we found all staff members very friendly and helpful, even the cleaners.

Anyway... this resort is fantastic. The pool is huge and very clean (which is good since swimming in the ocean made me itch). Even the cocktails at the swim up bar were reasonably priced. The only issue is that lack of shade around the pool, but other than that it's great.

The location of the resort was perfect for us. There are plenty of restaurants in walking distance, and heaps more just a 6 RM taxi ride away. As others have said - go to Cactus across the road for breakfast. I don't know what it's like at the hotel, but it's very expensice. The beach and stretch of road that Holiday Villa is located on is much more relaxing and quieter than other areas. It was also a good spot to hire a car from and expore the island. And right on the beach - what more can you ask for?

Overall we very extremely happy with this hotel. We thought it was GOOD value for money, and just a great place to stay. If you want a 5 star hotel with all the trimmings - don't stay here. But if you want a great resort, great pool, clean room, perfect location, for a reasonable price - do stay here.

We were extremely disappointed with this resort.
Room - very dirty, rubbish under the bed, bathroom was mosquito infested, curtains had holes in them, air conditioning was really noisy. We were a family of four and on arrival found we had a room with two single beds and told there was no option for a rollaway. We were happy to upgrade but the staff couldn't do anything for us.
Service - non existent! We ordered coffee through room service every morning. They took approx 40 min to get to us and the coffee was usually cold and turned up with no sugar. The Pool Bar staff lounged around on chairs chewing chewing gum behind the bar and often forgot our order! Had to go back and remind them. RUbbish BIns around the pool stank and were not emptied on a daily basis. The pool opened everyday at 8:00am however, when the pool guard finally turned up around 8:30 - 9:00ish you could finally get your towls and go for a swim. The Pool is huge, however has no shade at all, so if you have your kids beware of the sun! The kids room was about 10 degrees hotter than outside! No airconditioning at all. Also, you had to pay to use the Gym, there is no shop at the resort.
Beach - dont be fooled! The beach is lovely, however the water has sea lice and you get bitten. Not good for kids.
Reception and the staff at the hotel dont actively tell you that the Cable Car (which is a major attraction on the island) is often closed due to high winds. It would of been really good for reception to take the initiative and ring the cable car office and ask if it was open or not and then write up on the white board for guests to see before they take the 30-40min drive to the Cable Car.
Overall we were very disappointed. We are no 5 star family and always try and go middle range, however the Holiday Villa falls well below middle range! The best thing about Langkawi is the duty free and the "Cactus Cafe" over the road from the resort!! If you have been to Lombok Island in Indonesia (unreal place!), Langkawi is about 30 years behind Lombok!

Went to Langkawi a few years ago with my parents and siblings. Didn't really know what to expect since it was our first time there for a self-drive trip. Stayed in this wonderful and simple hotel. Check-in was a little slow since during that season there were quite many tourists. My room was sea facing but the hotel had quite alot of mosquitoes therefore we didn't really dared to open the balcony window.
I really liked the hotel since it is connected to the beach and also opposite our favourite restaurant throughout the whole trip!
"CACTUS RESTAURANT"
Highly recommended to try cause their food is really awesome! :)

During my stay we also had some mocktails by the side of the beach bar.
Nice ambience and very friendly staffs.
Would stay there again if i were to visit Langkawi the next time.

I went to Langkawi to meet up with my 26 year old son, who was travelling in Asia, so I wanted a hotel which would suit us both. Holiday Villas ticked all the boxes and I would go back any time. Great location, lovely staff, fabulous pool, etc. My only slight criticism was that Internet access was quite expensive in comparison to other things.
We hired scooters and thoroughly enjoyed touring all over the island. Roads ok and drivers considerate, in general.
Lots of really good eating places and some great beach bars on the strip, about a mile away. Babylon is the place for a few sundowners. Lovely young crowd and brilliant band.
I'd read a few reviews which were not great, but you have to wonder what these people are on!
As a seasoned traveller I'd recommend Holiday Villas to anyone.

Rosie

Upon arrival I got a little disappointed as the lobby looked rather old and boring. However, the room was very nice. The TV was nothing but a 22" flat screen which seemed pretty poor. On the otherhand, you're not in a tropical island to watch TV all day. The pool area of the hotel was very nice and sun beds available for everyone as there weren't many guests (or so it seemed). The beach was nice, a bit dirty though. Since I visited Langkawi in August it was rather windy and high waves making me the only one swimming on Pantai Tengah, pretty nice feeling ;-)

The location of the hotel was OK. On the street you could find a few restaurants and just opposite a super market. Pantai Cenang was just a 15 minutes walk up the street, however it was a bit dark at night).

The only major problem I had during my 4 days stay was the access to Internet. The hotel could only offer 2 (very old) computers with a pretty bad connection - and you had to pay for it. It wasn't cheap either (cannot remember the price), so decided to user the Internet at the supermarket across the street which had a better connection for a lower price.

In the end, it is a nice hotel and you will get into the holiday spirit here. A bit expensive (around 500 MYR per night) but could be worth it.
