This is worth the money when you consider what you pay for, decent size comfortable rooms, a huge and very pretty pool area, practically its own private area of a paradisiacal beach, wonderful at sunset. The restaurant on the beach is basic, wholesome food, some malay influennce and american style steak/ salad dishes etc, but well worth watching the sunset with sand between your toes enjoying the ever so cheap cocktails. It's a perfect base in which to explore the Island or even the larger Penang to the south. With an update would get 5 stars, however 4 is still good for the price as explained earlier/

Pros
We were given a room on the 3rd floor, but being in my 7th month of pregnancy, I requested a ground floor room and got one without too much fuss.
Quieter end of a decent beach, with plenty of loungers.
Nice enough pool, with lots of loungers as well.
Spacious room with good firm mattress and extra pillows in the wardrobe, adequate bathroom, fridge, kettle.
Looks like they're doing some painting touch-ups and landscape pruning/maintenance while I was there. Unobtrusive.

Cons
No hair dryer, but we brought our own, thanks to another reviewer who pointed it out.
Management tries hard but misses details like the in-pool bar that's closed and used to store tables, no shelf in the shower, no drying line in the bathroom for your wet things and towels, etc. So things are always that little but unsatisfactory.
Location might be a long trudge from anything/anywhere but we always rent a car in Langkawi so it didn't bother us.
The sea can smell a bit when you're in it, but that's because it's a known fishing spot and you'll see a few locals come by every day with their rods and go stand on the rocks for a spell.

Overall, it was ok, we got a good rate on Agoda. Not sure I'd come back though.

It's nothing fancy and it's slightly frayed around the edges, but the Lanai has a lovely pool and efficient aircon, plus very reasonably priced cocktails. That's three boxes ticked. Our first room had a problem but we were moved without any fuss and all up found staff to be efficient and friendly. There's plenty of parking, and a hire car is a good idea since they're so cheap and there's plenty of exploring to do. Cenang is a bit of a walk away.

Long corridors, wifi only in lobby area, pretty ordinary breakfasts - but you're there for the sun and to relax and the Lanai certainly lets you do that. The room was a fair size, the bathroom was fine - no complaints.

We had a late flight out but there was no problem about us using the pool and facilities till quite late in the evening.

I just returned from my holiday at the Lanai, and have to tell you, as a local, you can do so much better, in terms of accomodation in Langkawi. The rooms are like a backpackers inn and very dusty, the door is a hazard to young children as it slams shut and could get their tiny little fingers crushed (no that did not happen to my kids but i'm sure it must've happened before to other unsuspecting children).

Rooms and location aside, the worst must be the staff. They looked extremely uninterested in taking care of their guests. The waiters, check in staff were unfriendly, not helpful. THere are no lifts in this resort, so if you're travelling heavy or with old folks, beware, there are slippery stairways to negotiate.

Beach was good tho. We had a nice stretch of beach.. other than that, i would never return to the Lanai again. Like i said, for the amount i paid, i'd rather check out other hotels/resorts. Thank goodness i only utliized my room for sleep and only sleep.

Btw, the bathrooms are sucky too.

Let me say from the outset, I am over fifty and I like a little bit of adventure, culture and learning in my Asian adventures but I also love coming back to my resort for its top rate facilities and live the good life for a little while. If this is similar to you DO NOT stay at the Lanai hotel. You will be disappointed on all levels. It is more like a back packers with limited services and rundown rooms.
Upon arrival we checked in and we had to carry our luggage up three flights of stairs. No porters AND we were sent the wrong way by reception so we basically did a circuit of the hotel.
The room was old and quite basic. When I turned on the air conditioner it sounded like a Russian tractor and I had to get up and do a bit of judicious banging to stop the clatter. The bathroom was tiny and there was not a cake of soap; instead there was a tiny tube of liquid soap that was very inconvenient.
The pool did not have an attendant and I did not see any staff looking maintaining it at all. The beach bar served warm beer and all staff looked like they had been shipped in from the gulag; uninterested and unhappy.
The final straw was when our toilet sprung a leak, a gusher really and when we returned from a day trip it had not been fixed.
Do not stay in this hotel as a resort, it STINKS.

We stayed at the Lanai hotel for 5 nights, and booked through agoda.com for approx £48 per room per night.

Positives about the hotel:

Good air conditioning
Good breakfast lots of choice.
Beach bar happy hour 5.30-6.30pm every night - beer half price
Clean rooms
Free wifi in lobby (we could also access it in our room as we were close to the lobby)
On beach front
2 minutes from cactus restaurant (very cheap, nice restaurant serving chinese food)
Nice pool
Free beach towels and loungers.

Negatives about the hotel:

No hairdryer
Little bit tired
20 minute walk to Pantai Cenang (or 2 mins in taxi...cost £2 - positive)
Beach bar food is average
Outdated shower (laminate flooring in shower cubical!)
Very minor refurb work on the pool (some concreting of tiles)
No lift in hotel (hotel is on 3 floors, and consider carrying 2x 20kg bags after 14 hour flight...in 35 degree heat. = want a beer!)

Good things to do in Pentai Tengah / Cenang:

Little Lylias (beach bar) - next to "Tomato" restaurant (chilled out bar, cheap drinks
Cactus restaurant
3 island hopping tour (25 RG for 4 hour tour) - see monkeys, and eagles
Islandish restaurant (good food, and strong long island iced tea for 15RG)
