I have stayed in this place 3 times - 1st time was in 2011 and the other 2 times is in Feb 2013.

The hotel has 2 different locations for its rooms - one facility is at the beach side, and the other one is across the street from the beach. There are few different room categories available and I had the opportunity to stay at 3 different types of rooms.

The rooms at the beach side facility are much better compared to the ones at street side, and the location is a boon to the rooms. I would give a double thumbs up for its location (it's in the middle of the beach stretch) and restaurant setup - they have tables and benches facing the beach at the restaurant and one can enjoy a very serene and relaxing breakfast by the beach, watching the sunrise (or a drink in the evening, watching the sunset). As for the rooms, the new superior beach room beside the restaurant or the one in the 3-storey building by the beach are equally OK - clean, functioning hot shower with good water pressure, no cockroaches. There are no elevators though, so one would need to carry heavy luggage to the 2nd floor if you are assigned a room there. No bellboys though :D

The facade of the facility at the street side looks OK. Nonetheless, avoid the room across the street at all cost if hot shower is important to you because THERE IS NO HOT SHOWER AVAILABLE in the rooms across the street. The setup of the rooms is more dormitory like and Langkawi's water supply is so damn cold in early morning and after sundown. I only manage to get a good shower in the afternoon when the weather is hot and the water is warm enough! I have friends staying at the street side and they have leaky ceilings in their room! No elevator as well at this facility and guest have to walk from the reception across the street to this facility - 3 to 5 mins walk, depending on one's walking speed.

Superior seaside rooms are a little bit hard to come by and they normally do not let guest do booking on this type of room as existing guest kept extending their stay! These rooms are never vacant. One would have to see whether they are lucky enough to snatch one of these few room when checking in.

All rooms comes with breakfast and the menu is almost the same everyday - one type of local fare (nasi lemak / fried kuey teow / fried beehoon), one type of soupy nobles (mee sup or kuey teow sup), pan cakes, bake beans in tomato sauce, banana, cut papayas and green agar-agar (always green and never any other colour, since 2011)

Front desk staffs were helpful – they deliver towels for guests requesting for fresh one even when the rain was pouring, and the girl had to run to the 3 storey building block from the reception with an umbrella! But not so for kitchen staff – they are a bit ambivalent.

Overall, this resort provides a enjoyable stay for guest who wants a nice by the beach holiday in Cenang beach. But please choose to avoid the standard room at the facility across the street if you can’t live without hot shower!!!

Room Tip: Superior room at the beach side has full facility. Avoid standard rooms across the street if you can...

When checked in we were at first a little disappointed at the size of the room, it was quite small but had a side sea view and we soon got used to it. It had a wet room style bathroom which gives you lots of room to shower but you have to remember not to take towels or clothing in with you - they will get very wet! The room was adequately clean with nice thick towels and was serviced every day - the air conditioning was very good but a fridge would have been welcome. There is a second building across the road away from the sea on which we can't comment as we did not see it but the main building is right on the beach. The grounds are very attractive and well kept, nicely lit at night and with tables and benches dotted in and around the garden area which leads directly onto the beach. The restaurant and bar are outside and there is also a roofed-over area which is mainly the breakfast area - breakfast was mostly Malay local dishes but there were also a few European type choices and the menu changed daily -can be used any time you wish to get out of the sun for a while, or to make use of the free internet.

The hotel definitely does not deserve some of the bad reviews - it does not pretend to be a 4* hotel and does not charge 4* prices. It offers reasonable, affordable budget accommodation.

I must mention the excellent staff - when we booked we booked a week at Sandy Beach and a week at another hotel in the area. During our last couple of days my husband developed a quite severe back problem and he asked Azam, a senior member of staff, if he could recommend a good masseuse. He came back and said that the hotel owner had a friend living up in the hills who has a very good reputation for curing back problems and that the owner and his sister would take us there. We said we would take a taxi but they said the taxi drivers would not be able to find it. Bearing in mind that we moved out of their hotel that day and they could have sent us to any old massage parlour, that they took us up into the hills to see the man two nights running and would not take a penny towards their fuel or time costs. You can't get better service than that and we were very grateful of their help.

Most of the bad reviews came from occupants of the second building - please believe that the beach side building did not appear to be anything loike that!!

Room Tip: Pay for a room in the beach side building

We stayed at this hotel, and sadly didn't read the previous reviews, which are completely true and accurate and clearly all issues are not being addressed, therefore the management obviously doesn't care all the time people keep coming. So please avoid this hotel and think of the next unfortunate traveller. If no one complaines, nothing changes.

Like some of the other reviewers I stayed here while on a G Adventures tour, so I didn't know where I'd be staying. Some of the hotels I stayed in with the tour were basic but decent, this wasn't one of the them. You check in at the part of the hotel which is close to the beach, almost on it, so I thought we'd have a nice room overlooking the water. But then we walk to the building which is across the road and away from the main street (there's no traffic to disturb us here, but there's also no beach to look at either). There was sand on the road up to the part of the hotel we were staying in so I guess they live up to the "Sandy" of Sandy Beach Resort. But it looked dreary.

The room's decor was dull, the bed linen had stains and we had 3 in 1 coffee sachets but no kettle. Sockets were loose, there was a big crack in the window and there's no fridge. The towels were old, and the wet room bathroom has the shower head placed between the sink and the toilet. The bathmat is just outside the door, but is old, thin and I bet it isn't replaced between guests. It isn't sufficient to soak up any water. The bathroom door lacked a handle on the inside, but conveniently there was a hole in the door to use instead. The shower lacked power, and we had a beetle in the bathroom one night. The pillow was some type of foam that didn't give at all, it was hugely uncomfortable. The wifi was only available by the reception/restaurant, and the breakfast was awful. Flies were swarming around the messy pot of butter and there wasn't much choice. Go to the nice bakery instead and just avoid this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel!

Felt compelled to write this review as these simple bungalows are possibly the worst "accommodation" I have ever stayed in!
Stayed here as part of a G-Adventures tour. It was a basic standard tour so I was expecting some ropey places along the way and obviously our accommodation was pre booked so we had no choice but all I can say is if you have a choice, don't stay here!
Do not be drawn in by the pictures in the reception - the rooms look nothing like this (and I saw other people's in th party as well as my own room!)
There were lizards crawling up the walls.
There was no fridge but obviously very important in 30 degree heat - a dirty looking kettle and sachets of hot chocolate! So guests priorities really taken into consideration!
I woke up after the first night itching so there are potentially bed bugs but I couldn't say for certain!
There was however dirt on the walls and sheets for definite!
Some others from the group said their toilet when flushed, flushed back dirty water!
The bathroom is the usual wet room, which is common in these parts but there was no rail so everything got soaked when you took a shower!
Lastly, flies swarmed the breakfast buffet which was er slightly off putting!
Anyhow, I hope this helps/prevents some of you having a similar horrid experience!

I stayed at the Sandy Beach Resort the nights of December 12 and 13th, as part of a G Adventures group tour. We stayed in the units that were across the street from the beach.

In short, this place was terrible, and I would run far, far away. I do understand that when you pay budget prices, you need to expect basic accommodation, but you should not expect accommodation that crosses into unclean and unsanitary. No price, how low it is, is worth staying here, I would rather have had a tent in the parking lot.

To start, I received a room that was filthy and obviously had not been cleaned prior to my arrival, with the room being full of sand, dirt, and hair from the previous occupants. In addition to this surface dirt, the room had a deeper layer of filth covering it, indicating that it had not been properly cleaned in some time. The floors were grimy, especially in the corners, where they were covered in a thick film of it, and same went for the bathroom - something that a good scrub could easily take care of, but the staff obviously couldn't be bothered with. The mirrors in the main room and bathroom were also coated in a thin film of filth - again something that a few sprays of cleaner and two minutes could have fixed.

The walls were equally very dirty, with the paint coming off in many spots, and most corners of the room and bathroom having cobwebs. Again, something that a good scrub and the occasional coat of fresh paint could easily address.

The one towel I was given was ratty, old, and may have been white at some point, but was now tinged an ugly beige color. Bed sheets appeared to have been laundered, but were dotted with stains - both dark and light. Is spending a few RM on fresh linen every few years too much to ask either?

Infrastructure was poor, there were issues with the power and water not working while we were there, my air conditioning unit leaked a large amount of water all over the floor (I did put a bucket under it), the locks on the door and windows (I had a ground floor unit) were very flimsy. Of course, since the place was cheap, the mattress and pillows were poor.

Finally, two of the ten rooms in our group had severe issues with bedbugs (these at least were the ones that noticed them). For one, the occupant could actually see his infestation, with a large number of bed bugs crawling all over his bed. For the second, the occupant woke up with a very large number of bites (appeared to be close to 100) all over her body. The owner/manager profusely apologized, and ardently claimed this is the first time this has occurred here. However, from speaking with an acquaintance that was also forced to stay here as part of a G Adventures group tour, his group also had issues with bed bugs at Sandy Beach, so this is obviously par for the course here, and management doesn't seem interested in addressing this issue. In addition to the bed bugs, most rooms were full of ants, spiders, flies, and all sort of other little bugs.

Oh - and the food was terrible.

In short - run away!

Room Tip: Just stay away.
