“Mind the bed bugs!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2012

Unfortunately wouldn't personally recommend. We meant to stay few nights but left after the first night. We discovered bed bugs that were sucking us during the night. I killed 6 of them in the morning when they were stuck in our mosquito net so we are sure to stay what they were. Otherwise it wouldn't be such a bad place though I think it it's (even without the bugs) way over priced when there's only a bed and (cold) shower, not even enough plugs to charge if you don't want to unplug the fridge or fan. No garbage pin! Man working in the reception was friendly, and was there in the evening when we arrived but when I told about the bed bugs he didn't really answer so we got the feeling that they are aware of the problem (but hiding it). We stayed in much cheaper and better places in Malaysia. We ended up staying next door from this in a place called My Kampung, which had cheaper but much more modern, very clean and nice rooms.

Me and my friend stayed here for three nights. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was just off the main road so we didn't have to walk far to get to the shops and restaurants. Our room was ok with a nice bed and a much needed air con. On the downside the bathroom could have been a bit cleaner, the toilet lid was broken an the water pressure in the sink was almost not existent. All and all it's a good place to stay if you are used to backpacker standard.

Palms Guesthouse has changed owners recently. Prices haven't seemed to change but standard of the room has changed.
I must admit that I came this time during low season, service might be different during high season - my last review on this guesthouse was during high season.
This time, there was literally no reception. A piece of paper with a phone number was hanging on a door. You call this number and you are informed of your room number and that the key is inside. After this call, we didn't hear or see anything of the owner during the following 2 days.
Reception and welcome from the previous owner was what makes this guesthouse very charming and warm.
Regarding the rooms and surroundings, it was very low maintenance. The room was clean but where the previous management had the bathroom and terrace cleaned everyday, here we didn't see anybody for 2 days.
They used to have a nice area with tables and little kitchen in the backyard for your own light cooking. This area doesn't exist anymore and is just covered with litters now - empty plastic bottles and cans - they seem to recycle which is a good news but everything is lying on the ground in the backyard...
To sum up what makes it to so special before isn't there anymore, I don't think I'll come back another time.

We originally booked a fan room but after one night moved to a room with aircon as the room was just too hot. The owner was extremely helpful and gave us plenty of advice for visiting the area. The guesthouse was basic and simple and the shower was always hot. If you're a backpacker and on a budget then i would definitely stay here.

Our stay at the Palms Guest House in Pantai Cenang started in a fan only room and it was hot but manageble. However the water went off after the first night in our room and just a couple of other adjacent rooms. We negotiated a move to another room, but with air-con. Huge improvement in comfort a little extra cost.

We lost the water supply in this room too, but decided to hang on in there and it came back eventually. The biggest downer was bed bugs! We spent a while stripping the bed, playing hunt and squash and also managed to track down some bug-killer so we could de-infest our kit. We should have spotted the tell-tale signs of blood squashes on the walls and bedding - we thought it was just mozzies.

On the good side, the management was helpful and pleasant and the guest house has a lovely courtyard and is well placed for the beach and the strip.

Room Tip: Worry when you find bug squash marks all over the walls!

Stayed here with a friend in summer 2010. Great value, close to the beach yet up a side street so not noisy, really helpful owner and clean. Excellent value and wouldn't hesitate staying again.

We stayed at Palms for 2 weeks and loved our time there. The place is close to the beach but far enough away from all the late night action. The place was extremely clean and the couple that run it are very friendly and accomodating. We stayed at first in a fan room but then switched to an a/c room. The fan room was just too hot. Not enough air circulation as the fan is attached to the wall and isn't really that adjustable. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Palms and would recommend it to other budget travellers.
