We were looking for relaxation, fresh air, beautiful scenery, sunsets, a pool, open spaces and a self-catering chalet with room for the whole family on a reasonable budget. We found all this and more at Sunset Valley. We really enjoyed getting to know David and Gudrun who are charming, sociable and humorous people who treated us more like family than guests. They are very interesting and are also passionate conservationists who have organized litter cleaning operations involving hundreds of volunteers through the Rotary social service program which they coordinate. The rooms are lovely little Malay-style houses with nice western kitchens and modern bathrooms. At night you will hear all the sounds of the forest so light sleepers beware! But we soon acclimatized and came to love the feeling of being surrounded by nature. The views from the balcony are stunning, just rice paddies all the way to the horizon and then the mountains in the background, and the houses are in lovely lightly forested grounds with a large lawn where the children can play and run. The pool and bar area is great - you just bring your own beers and music and chill out to your hearts content - meet David and Gurdrun and socialize with the other guests. If you don't like dogs you may be in for a shock as Boris, Sunny and their brother have the run of the place which was great for my kids who love animals and don't have the chance to experience dog ownership at home. David and Gudrun helped us to find very economical car hire which is essential as the Sunset Valley is remote - but very central so you can get anywhere easily and gas is very cheap on the island. They set us up on a fantastic mangrove tour with Selva - a fellow ecologist and litter obsessive who was fantastic with our children (boy 7 girl 6) and we saw bats, dingos, dolphins, snakes and kingfishers and swam at a picturesque beach and had lunch at the famed 'hole in the wall' yachtie anchorage. Anyway - if you're looking for five star maids service and a Sheraton experience, this may not be for you. If you fancy watching the sunset with a beer by the pool, sharing travel stories with the other guests whilst your kids run and play in the gardens with the dogs, cook your own meals and do the washing up and experience a truly fabulous Malay style experience, then look no further! We loved it, and thanks again David and Gudrun - who even drove us to the airport to say goodbye - we'll be back again :-)
