Sunset Valley Holiday Houses

We were looking for relaxation, fresh air, beautiful scenery, sunsets, a pool, open spaces and a self-catering chalet with room for the whole family on a reasonable budget. We found all this and more at Sunset Valley. We really enjoyed getting to know David and Gudrun who are charming, sociable and humorous people who treated us more like family than guests. They are very interesting and are also passionate conservationists who have organized litter cleaning operations involving hundreds of volunteers through the Rotary social service program which they coordinate. The rooms are lovely little Malay-style houses with nice western kitchens and modern bathrooms. At night you will hear all the sounds of the forest so light sleepers beware! But we soon acclimatized and came to love the feeling of being surrounded by nature. The views from the balcony are stunning, just rice paddies all the way to the horizon and then the mountains in the background, and the houses are in lovely lightly forested grounds with a large lawn where the children can play and run. The pool and bar area is great - you just bring your own beers and music and chill out to your hearts content - meet David and Gurdrun and socialize with the other guests. If you don't like dogs you may be in for a shock as Boris, Sunny and their brother have the run of the place which was great for my kids who love animals and don't have the chance to experience dog ownership at home. David and Gudrun helped us to find very economical car hire which is essential as the Sunset Valley is remote - but very central so you can get anywhere easily and gas is very cheap on the island. They set us up on a fantastic mangrove tour with Selva - a fellow ecologist and litter obsessive who was fantastic with our children (boy 7 girl 6) and we saw bats, dingos, dolphins, snakes and kingfishers and swam at a picturesque beach and had lunch at the famed 'hole in the wall' yachtie anchorage. Anyway - if you're looking for five star maids service and a Sheraton experience, this may not be for you. If you fancy watching the sunset with a beer by the pool, sharing travel stories with the other guests whilst your kids run and play in the gardens with the dogs, cook your own meals and do the washing up and experience a truly fabulous Malay style experience, then look no further! We loved it, and thanks again David and Gudrun - who even drove us to the airport to say goodbye - we'll be back again :-)

I chanced upon this place when i googled "best kampung stay langkawi" and immediately fell in love with it. I cancelled my previous reservation with another hotel just to be here- it's worth it! I travelled with my mum and we didnt do much sports/adventure activities in Langkawi, so i feel that my stay here is THE highlight! Awesome to have breakfast at the verandah and to enjoy the sights and sounds....my best time to be at the house is about 7+ am and 5+ pm when i see their resident dogs wake up and play in the evenings. i really love the gently sloping hill overlooking the paddy fields and spent abundant time in the field playing with their lovely dogs and just sitting. That to me is the highlight cos it's quiet, peaceful and serene. David and Gudrun are wonderful hosts who look after their guests well. This place is terrific for those who wants simplicity(over TV) and looking for idle, languid pleasures with the typical to-be-expected kampung 'visitors'(mosquitos, ants, geckos- absolutely negligible and must be overlooked, relative to the serene beauty of this place).Overall, a must-stay if you're in Langkawi!

Room Tip: Paddy House- suitable for two people. Really quaint room with simple modern facilities.

We had a great holiday, great accommodation, great facilities, great hosts.
Everything about the resort was first class, a fantastic place for a relaxing holiday.
I was impressed by the Islands facilities, cheap food, cheap alcohol, great beaches and tourist attractions. I was most impressed by the Island Hospital, service and costs were first class........

Room Tip: choose a room to suit you family size.

We were very lucky to be in Langkawi in the quiet season, it was quiet but so was the whole island. This was an excellent choice of stay. The owners made us feel very welcome, the breakfast was great, the wildlife was incredible and the accommodation was more than we could have wished for.

It is out of the way of the main tourist routes but that is no problem if you have transport, we hired the Moped which was available for the whole time we were there. The little on site shop is a lovely touch and so was option to cook on site although we didn't feel the need to use it.

The Paddy House was lovely, very open and cool.

Thanks guys for the one of the highlights of our trip around Malaysia!!

Room Tip: the aircon is not needed

Really beautiful and peaceful. We got a great upgrade to field house because the house we had booked was being renovated. Field House is just gorgeous, a lovely Malaysian style wooden house with comfy beds, good ventilation and nice couches on the verandah. The pool area is great, with views over the paddy fields. The owners are really friendly and we appreciated one of the gardeners climbing a tree to get us a fresh coconut juice.

The only downside for us was the distance from the town and good restaurants. It takes about 15 to 20 mins to get anywhere where you have a selection of eateries. So, good to factor that in to your trip planning (although there is self catering available in the houses and a nice little store on-site).

Overall - awesome. One of the nicest places I've ever stayed in.

We stayed as a family of 5 adults in the Forest House and had an amazing time. If you want to stay somewhere different in Langkawi, this is the place. The Forest House was lovely and comfortable with loads of space - it has a large veranda to relax, enjoy the surroundings and appreciate the wildlife. The houses are very private. Make no mistake, these are self catering houses in the middle of the island so guests are responsible for keeping their lodge clean and tidy like you would with any self catering rental and it is different from staying in a hotel, but this is what makes it so different. The owners, David and Gudrun live on site and our experience was that they are extremely friendly and helpful if there is anything you need. They are also happy to give good advice on where to eat and places to visit. You should expect wildlife all around - we loved the geckos who live on the veranda in Forest House, watching them catch flies and bugs at night was fun and they didn't come anywhere near us, so no need to fear the geckos! There is a beautiful swimming pool with stunning surroundings, and the owners keep a small well stocked 'store' where you can buy essential supplies such as water, drinks and snacks which we found really handy. Hiring a car is recommended so you don't feel cut off and can explore the island. We would definitely recommend staying at sunset valley, it was a highlight of our 2 week trip around Malaysia.

We love Langkawi island and travel here every year. When we heard about Sunset Valley, we just couldn't believe that we have never heard of this place. It really is a little piece of paradise and we felt at home the moment we got there. It is our second stay here in less than 12 months and know that we would definitely return again. Nothing like having a few cold sundowners by the pool while watching the amazing sunset overlooking the lush paddy fields and mountains in the tropics.

We love nature, totally appreciated the peace and tranquility, enjoyed the lovely energy of this land and the cosy traditional Malay house simply made us feel at home. Having awesome hosts like David & Gudrun makes all the difference as well.
