The room is adorably appointed and takes on the look of a well thought out trip to Pottery Barn. Shabby chic it is- however, I feel they should be clear about that on their website upfront.

The photos on the website of the hotel are at night and that is for a reason. It looks like a rustic campground during the day. Disappointing grounds, pretty pools, but they looked like they had fungi/ algae growth, etc. LOTS of cats on the grounds. The staff told us that there were over 50. They will try to come into your room and can be persistent. There are padlocks on the doors. The standard room is in a row of rooms that looks like a rustic camp motel, with the aforementioned padlocks on the doors, and there is no soundproofing at all; you can hear every cough. Wifi was too weak- we had to walk over to their sister property (Bon Ton) to use it.

Room Tip: Just know that there is no soundproofing- if your neighbor is watching a DVD, that means you are too...

If you want an ultra lux hotel this is not the place... but if you want a historic, unique experience, go here. The staff is well trained for a small sized resort, which can be hard to find in Malaysia. They were professional and helpful. The main restaurant is great, however it would be nice if took more care on their wine offerings and explained the wine selection on the menu (instead of just putting the type of grape.) Wifi barely works and the TVs have no channels, just DVD. But somehow the charm of the whole place supersedes any of these annoyances. And the cats are cute too.

Room Tip: Try to get a corner room. The rooms themselves have zero insulation.

By Malaysian standard, this is very good hotel. Slow-paced and relaxed vibe. Swimming pool is a little small. The owner succeeded in making the place comfortable without being too touristy. Staff are very friendly and engaging. Missus loves animals, so the cats around the resort is an added bonus!

We stayed with our four children for three nights at Temple Tree; in two different tree tops houses. This was a magical place with sumptuous fabrics and colours and a fusion of ideas; creaky floor boards and fans; wooden showers and worn out shutters. The fridge was stocked each day with the most incredible treats: home-made sweet and savouries breads; amazing raspberry and chocolate cake etc. Cocktail hour at neighbouring Bon Ton was made special by the hospitality of the staff and the food was out of this world - we have never had such an amazing frozen chocolate and nut desert as we we sampled there. We had a wonderful time and would recommend this lovely place to anyone.

We have just left Temple Tree. It delivered everything we as a family expected and it was great to get away from the standard tourist hotel. The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. We stayed in one of the plantation houses, with 2 bedrooms it was easily big enough for a family of 4 and all the creaks, etc of the old style house only added to the experience in my view. Breakfast was great, we loved the concept of sitting around in our pjs eating the great home made bread. I loved the caramel shortcake we got one day. There was bread, yoghurt, juice and lots of fruit, more than enough to keep the kids full until lunch. The cats are everywhere and not a problem and even though there are many insects outside, the inside, some ants apart, are remarkably clear of insects.
5 minutes transfer from the airport and another 5 minutes into the main tourist beach area. We loved the quiet and would love to come back.

We stayed at Colinial House 2 - an apartment with ensuite washroom and a wooden bathtube in the courtyard. You feel in every detail the owner wanted to preserve the look and feel of an old house - and it is a success: Old style furniture, wooden windows, old tiles - all interior details show history, but they don't feel weared off!

The breakfast put every night in the fridge consists of bread, confiture/honey, yoghurt, orange juice, cake and fresh fruits. So you don't need to consider breakfast times and can even have a breakfast in bed! ;-)

Very nice: Everynight there is a happy hour at the pool of Bon Ton Resort (just some steps away from TempleTree) - with a free cocktail and a snack - the views of sunset are breathtaking, but be aware of mosquitos!

Two things you should consider before booking:

First, the resort is pretty far away from Cenang beach - it is a minimum 20 minutes walk along the main street with no sidewalk - and pretty dangerous at nights with cars going fast! So you need a car or motorbike (better choice for us!) for all the days! Second, you better like cats - they are everywhere and you feel they are the true masters of the resort.

Room Tip: Every room is special - please go on their website and check! If you want to have a spcial room - wr...

Temple Tree at Bon Ton is a beautiful and tranquil place to chill out by the pool overlooking the lagoon. The food is very good and we ate there most nights. The breakfast is fruit/cakes/bread, which is placed in your fridge daily. The rooms are really cool Malay buildings that have been transplanted onto the site from around Malaysia. The staff are great - really friendly and helpful. It's a shortish walk to the beach, but you will probably need a car to explore the island. Cats and insects were no problem - not sure what other reviews are on about.

We paid about $90 / night for a double room, which I think is about right - It's an amazing B&B - but not a "barefoot luxury" place - check out the Datai for that.

5* luxury it is not; 4* rustic should be your expectation - which I really liked - and be on the lookout for deals to get the price down.

Though classified as B&B/Inn, Temple Tree is actually more of a boutique resort of many cultures, an eclectic mix of heritage chic...Antique buildings of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian origin, make up this 8 villa hotel, with 8 rooms & 6 suites now open. Each building has, over its 70-110 year old history, created its own heart and soul. Hopefully we have given due respect to each of these family homes with the restoration process.
