I travelled from a KL guest house with some people there - 1 of whom claimed to know the owner of Rumours, and that it was a great place to stay. I have stayed in many many guest houses throughout South East Asia, but if there was a competition for bathrooms with the most stench, or a bed more uncomfortable, or shower drainage non-existent, or broken toilet that does not flush - then this place would win. It's saving graces are that the staff are truly lovely and friendly, and it is in the centre of town (behind a market so no street noise. There is spacious ground around the guest house and I saw some books on a shelf in the common area for people to read, and as I said that staff are terrific, but this place is a serious health risk. One of the young men in the group I was travelling with, could not bring himself to go into the bathrooms at all (I wore flip-flops and hoped for the best, and tried to turn my nose sense off while I washed (cold water only but you don't really need hot water in Malaysian heat). The men's urinals looked like they also didn't flush and hadn't been flushed for some time (the bathrooms were unisex so women also have t put up with the stench of days/weeks/months? mens' urine). There was a sign to please put rubbish in the bins, but there were no bins to be seen in or near the bathrooms so I had to carry my waste paper from the bathroom with me and dispose of it outside the guest house.. There was no toilet paper provided (not a big deal in Asia). I didn't want to use the water sprayers as I was not sure that they had ever been cleaned (and all those hands using them in a toilet situation, so not sure if they work or not). The bed wires could be felt through the thin mattress and I think there may have been half a plank of wood under the mattress to try to counter the thinness of the mattress (or to stop a body from falling through to the ground?), which made it kind of worse. There were 2 portable fans in the room but one of them doesn't rotate which means that only 1 of 7 beds receives moving air from one of the fans in the dorm room. The bedding seemed clean, and keys were provided for the dorm room (the door could probably be forced easily enough if someone wanted to, even though the padlock supplied was strong). No lockers but you can leave your possessions with the staff and they will keep them in the office (not really ideal). I was surprised that staff were willing to take money and allow people to stay here - really. The towel and 'blanket' provided were clean, I am not sure about the sheets - in these conditions, one hopes fore the best and gets out as fast as possible.
I don''t often write reviews, but feel compelled to write this one to warn people about the health hazard in this guest house. To the manage, ent and especially the staff - please take note of what is happening in your guest house and attend to the broken toilets etc - not sure how you don't observe this is happening.

It was located about 5 minutes walking from Underwater World, Pantai Chenang and Duty Free shop (Cross the street). Very strategic location to stay near the flea markets, shop and place to eat.

Surrounding villages area (Kampung style) with trees and chillin' style of set up.

There's a few types of room, but I choose the one with corridor outside (with some chairs) for smoking or whatever.

It's an air conditioning room with queen size bed and a bathroom without hot water shower just ok for myself and friends because we just need a place to bump and not for sleep the whole day.

Wifi and pool table available at the guesthouse cafe and the staff is very friendly and knowledgable especially a guy names 'Mamu'. He know what's the best place to suggest for the rest of the trips like good bar's/clubs to go, islands hoping trip, ground activities and which the best operator to choose and he will personally call for taxi or transport.

So far I enjoyed staying such a chill place, and will come again someday if they didn't change the room rates! :)

Hidup Mamu!

I normaly visit here every offday from The Datai. Its realy cheap but dont expect much.Dont complaint. What you pay is what you get.Friendly owner, manager and staff. Its a good meeting point for backpackers to meet and share stories. It might be usefull especially if you're first time in Langkawi.I cant comment much on the food they serve because i normaly wake up hangover in the afternoon. So if you're trying to strecth your cash for as far as it can go,i would highly recommend Rumours Guest House.I would rate it as average.

I came here on short notice, just before christmas eve 2011. wandered around for an hour, bumped to this place and stayed 3 days. I have got the back room garden and chicken view, but i wasnt really expecting sea view. Place is well located, simple breakfast was included, room was spartan and fairly clean. Best thing about the place is staff, local crew of rasta guys and really nice terrace where you can meet other guests. Beware, mosquitos in zillions!

i been staying at rumours now for 3 weeks, was ment to stay 3 days but ended up loving this place, i dont think i would of enjoyed the island it self if i had gone somewhere else, the staff here are very helpful and kind, always going out of there way for help and make your stay more happy, the rooms are basic but clean, the prices are spot on.
soon as you come to the place you have a sence of welcoming and safety.
you can also waste alot of day in the hostal, laying in the hammocks and drinking with the other guest
one think i enjoyed the most at rumours is the NO WIFI . it is the best idea ever, you dont hav people behind laptop 24/7, instead you have people talking, shareing and connceting to each other lifes, true back packer style.
over all great place for a relaxing getaway

I stayed at Rumours Guesthouse for a week in December 2012. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the friendly owners, we were soon given a refreshing welcome drink and while we recovered from our journey to Langkawi in the hammocks by the bar we chatted to the staff to find out where was good to eat out, to drink and to sightsee. The staff were more than happy to give us recommendations. It was noticeable that the staff were all enjoying working there and this created a really pleasant atmosphere, before long friends of the staff were socialising in the restaurant area and we were invited to join.

A great place to go to meet other backpackers, the location is perfect as it's a one minute walk back from the road so much less noisy than the other guesthouses and resorts along the beachfront, not to mention cheaper. Now my favourite place in Langkawi!

A true backpacker vibe, a tasty free breakfast, affordable rooms, friendly and informative staff.
