“Charming stay in tranquil rein-forest retreat”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

This is the second and not last time I have stayed at Ambong Ambong. I can only highly recommend this secret rein-forest retreat only minutes away from the beach!

Myself, mum and sister have stayed eight days at the suite with open balcony, we had a big monkey Marcel visit us for breakfast which made it very special as we don't usually see monkeys in Australia & Europe in our dining area. Don't worry we are very aware of the health and well being of animals and never fed him :)

The place is located away from the busy center and allows you to really disconnect and absorb the beautiful forest surrounding. We loved every Malaysian breakfast ( you can choose between European or Malaysian) it was delicious and we were always looking forward to discoverer new Malaysian fruits and rice dishes. My favorite was the green pancake with brown sugar and coconut!

There is an incredible new yoga deck and the sunsets are absolutely breath taking. Dorothy is a very skilled and knowledgeable instructor who goes the extra mile to make your Yoga practice worth all the effort. She pays a lot of attention to posture, pranayama and I really enjoyed her new egg shaped blocks which fit your body shape! Such a talented person and the resort is so lucky to have her.

The staff at Ambong Ambong is charming and most importantly very caring, they really want you to have the best experience. Anna who assisted in organising all was replying to my emails on her holiday break!! Staff don't usually go that extra mile but Ambong Ambong is one big family and they really make you feel like you are their priority!

I can't wait to go back to Langkawi! My favorite destination!

Room Tip: The suite is incredible! It allows you to connect with nature - there is an open balcony and monkeys...

Thank you for staying with us for the second time and being such an appreciative guest both times. Anna, Nizam and the team enjoyed having you and your family stay with us.

The cafe ( The Good Earth) that we were building when you were last here is nearly ready. We plan to serve teas and coffees, fresh fruit juices, a range of alcoholic beverages, and finger food. There will also be a small library of books on Malaysian history, culture, flora and fauna at one corner for guests who are interested in these things. With its cool, light and airy ambience it should be a favorite place for guests to socialize with other guests and to relax after yoga or after a tiring tour of the sights.

Please come back again soon.

Our sort of place. On arriving we were a little daunted by the hill, but those fears were soon put to rest by the greeting we received! The room was superb, a wonderful view, with monkeys and squirrels for neighbours. The perfect end to our honeymoon on Langkawi.
We used the neighbouring spa, which was excellent value.

Ross & Nik

Room Tip: We stayed in singa 2, right at the top of the hill with a beautiful view!

It is amazing what surprises can be seen from the balcony. Just last week, a guest saw a flying ( gliding, actually) lizard go right past Singa 2 for a distance of about 20m. While these creatures are not rare, it is unusual and a little surprising to see one in full flight over such long distances.

One evening about 2 months ago, the guest staying in Singa 3 was amazed to see a flock of giant bats feeding on a tree a little way below. Also commonly called flying foxes ( from the shape of their heads), these fruit feeders are the largest bats in the world with wing spans that can reach 2m. Once very common, they are sadly now endangered and fairly rare.

Last year another guest staying in one of the lower rooms was lucky enough to photograph a flying ( again, gliding actually) lemur feeding just outside her balcony. Though not rare, they are nocturnal, very silent and difficult to see.

Even though the jungle is an environment very familiar to us we never cease to be amazed. By building Ambong Ambong we hope to have made the tropical forest a little bit more accessible to our guests while preserving this rich environment.

Pleas come back again and visit.

Tonight is my 3rd night here. Ambong Ambong has given me everything I wanted!

It is secluded however the beach is only a 5ish minute walk away. Very easy - down the driveway, across the road and first driveway on the left. At low tide you can walk the whole beach.

Ambong Ambong is on a steep hill & generally taxis will only drop you off at the carpark. From the carpark one can walk to the office (less than a minute walk) or use the mobile phone supplied during your stay (to call the office which is onsite or to make emergency calls) to call the office to pick you up. When I arrived the Japanese restaurant (next to the carpark) was closed however staff were back and forwards from the carpark and therefore picked me up.

I am traveling with my 2 year old son who walks with me up and down the hill daily as we prefer to walk than get a ride. If my 2 year old can easily walk the hill, then most people can. Note: no prams or pushchairs allowed.

The pool is warm an tranquil. Because there are few villas, and therefore few guests, Ambong Ambong is a very private and peaceful place without the crowds of people as per most hotels/resorts. If you are after crowds then this gem is not for you.

The town area is less than a 10 minute walk or the staff can drive you to the nearest minimart free of charge.

Staff have been excellent. We were warmly greeted, and everything explained to us upon arrival. Staff always greet us and my son was playing with the mobile phone and called the office and hung up. They immediately called back to ensure everything was ok (which is when I realized what had happened).

Breakfast is fruit, musli, yoghurt, home made breads (a small selection of different breads), jam, butter and juice. Food - takeaway can be ordered (a menu is supplied) and prices are reasonable. Staff will place the order, pick it up and drop it off to you. Allow up to 40 mins for drop off. Otherwise the main street with restaurants etc are not too far away.

The fridge includes free drinks including some beers. (It doesnt get restocked however there are plenty of cans of different drinks to last a night or two.)

Rooms are of excellent standard and peaceful. Im in the single story 2 bedroom cottage, which has the office underneath. Occassionally i hear the nearby road or staff/people walking past but only when im on the balcony. As mentioned there are few people staying here so there's not a lot of people onsite therefore not much noise.

We've seen a lot of monkeys playing and gekos, etc. Whilst we've seen mosquitos we've been lucky enough to only get a few bits, without any repellant on.

You may want to consider hiring a car as hire starts from RMB40 per day.
Taxi prices:
From airport RMB24
To Underwater world RMB10 one way
2 hour taxi hire RMB90
4 hour RMB110

I'm definately coming back here as its not always easy to find such a tranquil setting without the price tag.

(Theres no fitness centre - ignore the fitness centre review below; i couldnt delete it)

Thank you for a long, comprehensive and gratifyingly appreciative review.
We try to create a resort that is different and interesting to cater to the more discriminating traveller; one who enjoys the buzz of travel and yet wishes to be able to retreat to a quiet bower of peace where discreet personal service is the norm.
By and large we have succeeded in doing this, judging from the many very favorable reviews that we have received, but as in most things, there are new lessons to be learnt and refinements to be made and we take guest comments very seriously and positively.
As an example, following several requests we are now working on a bar and café near the swimming pool to create a space where guests can either meet other guests or enjoy a contemplative glass of wine while taking in the superb views of the Andaman Sea.
Similarly we are developing a garden of medicinal and culinary herbs for those of our guests who want to know more about folk medicines as much as to be a depository of the traditional healing arts, which are rapidly being lost as their practitioners die.
Please come back again and enjoy both additions.

Ambong ambong, so good they named it twice,
Lovely secluded hill side bungalows and flats just on the outskirts of pantai cenang beach resort in a rainforest setting, monkeys climbing out in the undergrowth.
Nissam is the manager who is a super chap who sorts you out with drinks, g&t's, taxis and you get provided with a mobile phone with speed dial to a driver to get you up and down the hill and the office for more water etc.
The beds are lovely , as is the on suite and the air conditioning excellent, the decor stylish and the balcony broad and airey.
The breakfast is continental or you can ask Nissam for a local breakfast which is delicious. I could not fault it for our needs. 10 ringgit into the main resort for party people.

Thanks for creating an excellent tag-line for us and, if you have not copy-righted it, we would love to use it: Ambong-Ambong is so good that they have to name it twice.
Actually ambong-ambong is the name of an ubiquitous plant that grows by the sea-shore in the tropics and can be found as far afield as Africa and the South Pacific islands. We chose it because the soft alliterative sound is reminiscent of gentle waves lapping the shore or the faint sound of tropical breezes wafting through the trees.
It is also an important herbal plant used in traditional medicine during child-birth and in curing eye ailments. The images that this plant invoke – common and yet special and useful – fit in with our philosophy.
Nizam thanks you for your kind words and looks forward to preparing his latest alcoholic concoction for your next visit.

Ambong-ambong exceeded my expectation in many ways. It is very well designed to blend in with nature and well thought out. No formal check in/out procedure which was absolutely great and time saving. We absolutely love the balcony overlooking the rainforest and sea view from slight distance, and the unique DIY breakfast concept. The only drawback is that the fresh fruits served which was not sweet enough and the steep hike up to our room. Ambong is located at a less crowded area of Pantai Tengah, offering absolute tranquillity and still within a short distance to the lively Pantai Cenang. Perfect option for those seeking unique laid back experience away from the hustle bustle. I would definitely love to return again someday and wouldn't mind spending half a day in the room!

Room Tip: Get a high floor, overlooking both sea and rainforest.

Thank you for a great review and I am sorry that an otherwise perfect stay was a little soured by the fruits that are not sweet enough. I expect you are referring to the pineapples. Generally most are well ripened when delivered and ready for eating but occasionally the odd slightly unripe fruit slips by. We will now ensure that every fruit is sampled before being served.

I hope that on your next visit here will be no recurrence of this. See you next year.

We have a fantastic life living and working in Malaysia. So many places to visit and see wildlife at its best. My wife said she would like to visit a rainforest or the like. I booked Ambong Ambong because of the pictures and reviews. We were picked up from the airport by our Malay friends/adopted family who took us to the hotel where we were met taken by 4x4 to our room by the hotel guys. When we walked in the door we were met by an open verandah outlooking the forest. This is the lounge / kitchen area. Also a wooden bath (Hot and Cold water) where you can soak and have a glass of champagne. Next was the bedroom with a four poster bed and ensuite bathroom which both have huge windows and panoramic views. Our friends who all visited us could not beleive the fantastic views
On the three days we were there we saw Dusky Leaf and Macac monkeys, Hornbills, Oriels (yellow bird) Giant Squirrels, tree squirrels and many small lizards. All of these literally in front of our room in the trees. Do the Cable Car and Mangrove Tour, but be there early to avoid the queues.

Room Tip: We stayed in S1 which is the bottom room of a three storey building.

As you mentioned the fantastic views of the Andaman Sea and of the distant mountains and islands framed by green forests is the most attractive feature of the suites. Even though all our rooms have good views of the sea, the suites, being higher up the hill, offer the best by far.
Sitting in the hot tub at the end of the day with a glass of sun-downer in hand looking at the sky awash with the colours of the setting sun is an exquisite experience we recommend to all our guests and I am glad you were able to enjoy it.
Thanks for a great review and, seeing that you live in Malaysia, come again frequently whenever you need to be rejuvenated.

We stayed at Ambong Ambong for eight nights in February this year and we had a great time. We went with four friends and we were made really welcome. Anna couldn't do enough for us but most of the staff excelled at their jobs and went the extra mile to look after us.
Waking up to the monkeys in the trees in the morning was a real treat and a conversational distraction fro the weather!! Breakfast was a choice of local food or continental and was extremely good. It was nice to wake up when read, make fresh coffee and breakfast on the balcony watching the monkeys.
The owners hosted a party on the Wednesday evening with food and free flowing cocktails and drinks; it was excellent and a great social event.
Although it is a steep climb up to the rooms, a driver is on hand to take you and collect you, and a mobile phone is provided so that you can contact the driver and other local services, so it was absolutely fine.
Whilst we were there, one of our party had their 50th birthday. I had bought some bubbly so I asked Anna if she could loan us some flute glasses. When we got back to our apartment on the day, the room was decorated with balloons etc and there was a birthday cake in the fridge, along with the requested flute glasses. Fantastic!!!
So why haven't I given 5 stars? Well, the only downside for me is that the room could have been cleaner. All the windows were smeared for the whole duration and there was dust in a few places; i.e. on the top of the TV, under the bedside cupboard that never moved. As i'm asthmatic this was a particular concern. To be fair to the staff, I didn't report it because they were all so nice and helpful I didn't know how to approach the issue.
That said, would I return to Ambong Ambong? Most definitely YES!

Room Tip: If you decide to stay in the suite, just be aware that monkeys can get on the balcony! Our friends s...

Thank you for an excellent and even-handed review.
As the owner I am both aghast and deeply embarrassed by what you described, which was intolerable and inexcusable. I like to think that those staying at Ambong-Ambong are my personal house guests, and anything like this is extremely cringe-worthy. I have friends and family who are asthmatic and are aware of the implications for you. I thank you for not kicking up a fuss.
Please accept my sincerest apologies. You say that you will visit us again; please do so and give me a chance to make some small restitution.
