Berjaya Langkawi Resort - Malaysia
Ranked #12 of 104 Hotels in Langkawi
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 31 July 2014 via mobile

My wife and I recently returned from a fantastic holiday there. Service was great. Sprawling area, but do not worry, the shuttle service is excellent. It has a huge beach front, very private. The beauty about Berjaya is, it prepared ample number of deck chairs for everyone.
Will definitely want to go there again.

Stayed for 6 nights and found the setting idyllic. We had rain forest chalets which were excellent. It was downhill to the beach, pool, restaurants etc so could walk ok but took the shuttle bus back up. Found the staff to be helpful and friendly. The beach is lovely and the sea so warm could have stayed there for much longer. Very handy for the cable car and oriental village. The seven wells and waterfall are also within walking or biking distance or a short taxi ride away. We also had a couple of nice meals at a harbour area nearby. Highly recommended.

This hotel is a huge complex of chalets set in the jungle hillside and in the waterfront. We had a water chalet right at the waterfront, with a great view. There are some water chalets set behind others, which would be a bit disappointing, especially if you had paid the same premium price for it. The jungle chalets are arguably nicer, as they are set deep in the woods, and apparently you get small animals coming to your balcony (which you don't for water chalets).

Because of the size of the complex you are carted about in shuttle buggies, which means you may have to wait a bit to get to your chalet, or back to reception. The water chalets are set high up, and are not set up for you to swim directly in the sea from your chalet, in case any of you are thinking of doing this. They are beautifully appointed, and there is strong complimentary wifi throughout the complex.

Breakfast is generally good quality. If you are booked In a premium chalet you have breakfast in the beach restaurant, with your main breakfast cooked to order. This could be counter-productive as your choice of food is somewhat reduced. However you get great service.

The complex is just next to the Sky Cab cable car and Oriental Village where there are a good selection of local shops and eateries. The Sky Bridge has been closed for repair for a couple of years now, without any definite re-opening date.

I would strongly advise you to hire a car, which is very cheap in Langkawi. That way you can visit places you would otherwise miss as you cannot possibly take a taxi everywhere as the cost can mount up. Alternatively you could hire a taxi for about 4 hours, for about 120 ringgit.

Room Tip: I would recommend the cheaper hillside chalets, with seaview

This resort is more for people who like the feeling of living in the jungle. Our check in was a little slow and as the resort has about 600rooms divided on many chalets spread around the area many guest had to use their pick up system that could be a bit long to wait if there were many guest who were waiting at the same time. We were lucky to live near the beach and the main building where the breakfast was.

Our room was not cleaned properly and our pillow smelled of sweat that hadn't dried yet. Other than that I think the resortl is an ok resort. We switched hotel to the Danna and we certainly noticed the different when it came to service, cleanliness and the feeling of a 5star.

The room we were given was definitely not what we booked based on the pictures from the website.
We complained and were upgraded to a 'Premier chalet on the water' it was also in poor condition, the shelf in the shower hanging off. all very very old. The bed given to our daughter was worn, the mattress dipping. The air-conditioning units also very old and noisy.we booked private pick up through the hotel, it was dirty and used drink cans in the doors.
the pool is not big enough for the size of the resort. We found some staff lazy, doing the minimum.
We were given a free meal at the Beach Cafe, which was pleasant and breakfast there was better than the main area. The only times we saw monkeys was when bags of rubbish were left out and they came to rip open the bags for food. overall we would not return or recommend.

Room Tip: there are newer chalets

My husband and I recently stayed at the Berjaya for 7 nights. In itself the Berjaya was an impressive resort with 5 restaurants, pools and many rainforest bungalows. The staff were very friendly and the service was great. We relaxed for the first few days and enjoyed picking a restaurant to go to and swimming/using the facilities (the gym had fantastic facilities). The shuttle bus service to the rooms and the oriental village is fantastic. After 2-3 days though for myself (a person who does not sit around that much) found it a bit limiting and isolating. The only way to get back into cenang beach or near some other restaurants or shops was a taxi (26-30 RM minimum one way).

On one occasion I needed to go to the pharmacy and had to catch a taxi which ended up costing me a lot more than my small pharmacy purchase. As a recommendation, if you go out of the Berjaya I would make sure you buy everything you need - snacks/water/sunscreen etc before you go back. The closest shop is a petrol station a few km away.

We didn't discover the oriental village until the last few days and really enjoyed going to the food court there for lunch. Not only was it a lot cheaper, it was yummy food and some real Malaysian dishes.

We wanted to hire bicycles at the Berjaya but they were pretty expensive and charged by the hour, much cheaper from cenang beach but very hard to find any. Scooters or hire cars seem to be the preferred thing to get around the island.

There is a resort doctor who was great, he treated me after being stung by a jellyfish at the beach at the Berjaya. Unfortunately my symptoms were quite severe and I ended up spending 2 nights in hospital - so be wary of jellyfish.

Overall, the Berjaya is a fantastic resort, it really suits families and people that like to stay in one place but be prepared to pay a lot more money for the food in the restaurants and not be able to walk straight out the door to explore langkawi.

1) A private beach that's more than 200 metres long.
2) An excellent breakfast buffet with lots of Western, Chinese and Malay choices of food
3) Big, clean, well-maintained rooms with excellent A/C and large televisions.
4) Friendly staff
5) Guests stay in individual chalets, so you feel like you have much privacy (although sometimes 1 chalet contains 4 guest rooms).
6) A 10-minute walk (or 3-minute shuttle bus ride) from the Langkawi Cable Car
7) The resort is on its own part of the island, so it's quiet and feels secluded.
8) The resort is attractive looking.
9) Only a 15-minute taxi ride from the airport.
10) Excellent food at the restaurants
11) Excellent tree cover provides shade everywhere but on the beach.
12) Lots of amenities for children.

1) Terrible wifi in the chalets and poor wifi in the central area
2) Only 4 onsite restaurants (the Japanese restaurant that they infer is part of the resort is actually near the Langkawi Cable Car, a 10-minute walk away)
3) You are at least a 20 minute taxi ride from Underwater World, the main duty-free shops and the main tourist part of town, where there's a Starbucks, McDonalds, KFC and Chatime.
4) You are nearly an hour from Kuah town - where the main shopping mall and only movie theatre are located.
5) The resort isn't as beautiful as some of the more recently-built resorts on the island.
6) The TV only gets about 20 channels.

I enjoyed my time there, but I would probably chose the Westin resort next time: that resort is more beautiful and in a much better location on the island.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are very, very far from the lobby. Free shuttle buses will gladly come to pick you...
