“Just lovely”
Reviewed 26 February 2009

We stayed here over Xmas for the first leg of our honeymoon. The rooms were immaculately clean, and I do agree with some other reviews that they are a little worn in places but you cannot fault them. We had one of the Bayu Senja rooms which I think are a little larger, but the open plan with the option to close doors etc was lovely - basically a bath tub in the middle of the room was a luxurious touch.
The staff could not do enough to help - probably the best I think I have experienced in a long long while, the food was some of the best I've ever had.
We did leave feedback when we left of how they could improve and what was great and they have since written to us to update us on what our comments have helped to make the experiences even better for people still to go there. They are re-furbishing the rooms, they are only a little worn at the moment but will be very special when they do. The adults pool only was difficult for them to keep children away but I understand they are now putting clearer signs up in all languages, don't use the hotel phones - too expensive - we were quoted wrong but a simple mistake and they did resolve this ammicably.
The resort was just lovely on the whole, quiet (even though it was full when we went there), you could always find a sunbed at either pool, the live music playing whilst we ate was just gorgeous - loved the Rhu and ate there mostly. Breakfast was just brilliant every day. Just make sure you book early in the day which restaurant you want to eat in that night - we found this a little restrictive and not flexible but I guess they do have to plan - the only thing I would change through as we couldn't eat where we wanted to on 2 nights.
Our experiences for a honeymoon were as we expected. We've travelled to many places on our honeymoon trip, some we'd recommend, other not, but on this one, thumbs up to the Tanjung Rhu - would highly recommend it to anyone! Enjoy. Oh and go to the spa - I've never had an experience like it - amazing!

The other reviewers have said it all really - this is a really special place.
We had the "cheapest" courtyard view room, but really it was like a suite with a balcony overlooking the palm-tree filled central area. Very spacious, comfy bed, good air con, very quiet. The rooms are apparently being refurbished in a few months, but really these are not "tired" rooms by any stretch of the imagination.
The hotel was not completely full when we were there, so we didnt have any particular problems getting sunbeds etc.
Our only criticism is that during our stay all the pools had kids in them, even the so-called adults-only pool (which was initially the sunset pool but then changed to the sands pool), as the staff took no steps to enforce the "adults-only" rule. If the pool had been kiddie-free, then we really couldnt have criticised the place at all! The food is great at all 3 restaurants, and the all-inclusive option is a must!
Zohir the hotel naturalist knows his stuff, speaks great English and has a good sense of humour, so book a trip out with him if you can. We did the nature walk and the long mangrove tour - both excellent.
We hired a car and driver to tour the island one day - the cable car is well worth a visit.
Overall, a really beautiful place - we went to a smart hotel in Penang afterwards (Shangri La in Batu Ferringhi) but it was nowhere near as special.

From the moment we arrived to the time we reluctantly left we were so impressed with this resort.
Not only is the setting beautiful, the beach, the scenery and surroundings but the staff were amazing. With 1 rare exception, all staff were smiling and seemed genuinely happy to be serving us. All were very helpful and seemed aware of any details concerning our stay and helped us to feel relaxed.
Our room was the smallest dut larger than most standard double rooms with large bed, plenty of other space and storage plus a very large bathroom with loads of towels, 2 types of robes and slippers.
We also used the spa which was excellent but a little expensive- but worth the expense!
Food here is really good and all-inclusive option is really worthwhile. 3 Restaurants give different dining options. Settings for Rhu and Saffron are really nice whereas we found Sands to be too hot and have less atmosphere but lovely food.
Options for lunch and snacks during the day are really good too - if you have any room for them after the excellent breakfast! Good range of non-alcholic drinks also available at any time.
We were able to stay in our room until 6pm on day of departure and after checking out were still able to make use of all-inclusive option until we left at 7.30pm.
We will return and for the first time we are considering returning to a hotel within 1 year, rather than going elsewhere.

My wife and I stayed at Tanjung Rhu resort for ten days in August 2007 as part of our honeymoon. I booked it at the last minute- about six weeks before the wedding- so it was with a little trepidation that we arrived there. No need, it's a fantastic resort. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. When booking in, an assistant manager came to the room and went through all the features that the resort has and answered any questions we had. If we needed any help booking trips, ordering taxis or pretty much anything else, someone would take care of it with a smile.
Although we stayed in the most basic room, it was larger than some suites I have stayed in and was kept immaculate with a newspaper delivered first thing every morning, fresh fruit and chocolates on our pillows every day. Free use of a room-safe, excellent facilities in the room and powerful air-conditioning were all appreciated too.
Our room was literally one minute's walk from the private beach which was cleaned every morning and has a beautiful view of nearby islands. Although not really the beach holiday type, we spent quite a lot of time relaxing on the sun loungers there having the occasional cocktail delivered to us; it has always been something of a fantasy of mine to lie on a tropical beach drinking a delivered cold cocktail and it happened here!
The resort's facilities are excellent. We tried all the on-site restaurants during our stay. I particularly enjoyed the sushi and sashimi bar at the Asian Sands restaurant. The Mediterranean Saffron restaurant serves, as you might expect, a Malaysian interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine which made it different from anything I had previously tried, but that was no bad thing. We went to the haute cuisine Rhu restaurant on our last night and were very impressed; the meal was superb, the setting top-notch and the service first-class. Breakfast is served in Sands and is a sumptuous buffet catering for local, European and Japanese tastes. There's definitely something for everyone on the menu.
The reading room was near our room and is a pleasant place to enjoy a coffee on the balcony in the morning and to listen to classical music in the evening. At the time of our stay the residency was filled by a Ukrainian string quartet whose music could be heard drifting through the resort each evening. I felt this added nicely to the general atmosphere.
Other resort facilities include swimming pools- again kept immaculately clean, internet suite, health club and even a telescope to take advantage of the clear skies. There's also plenty of wildlife around the resort. As well as the ubiquitous mynah birds and geckos, I was lucky enough to see monkeys, ghost crabs, eagles and large fruit bats during my stay- though this was mainly either very late at night or early in the morning before I had become accustomed to the time change.
We actually spent most of our time away from the resort, visiting attractions around the island. Trips can be booked through the hotel or with other local operators. The staff at the hotel were happy to help us arrange our own trips, which mostly involved us hiring a taxi for the day and travelling round the island. There's also a regular coach service between the resort and Kuah- handy for visiting the local market and shopping.
One thing worth remembering is that the resort is right at the northern tip of Langkawi which means that evening dining is much easier done at the resort. For this reason I would recommend the all-inclusive package if staying there rather than the standard package we booked as it saves on the bill at the end of your stay.
In short, we loved this resort and would happily go back. In my opinion it's a 5-star resort and well-deserving of that rating.

  • Liked — It was spotless and the service was excellent in every regard.
  • Disliked — Being slightly isolated from most of the island.

My Wife and I have just returned from 12 nights at the Tanjung Rhu.

From the moment we were greeted at the airport and whisked away by complementary shuttle you start to get an idea of the level of service you'll be treated to during your stay.

The first thing to mention has to be the beach. The sight of the rocks rising from the water is simply stunning, the photos really don't do them justice. The sand is a brilliant white and while the water isn’t your Caribbean turquoise, the emerald green just adds to the beauty.

We stayed in a Cahaya room which was extremely spacious with large bath and walk in rain shower. The flatscreen TV is on the small side for the size of room but as there's not that much to see on it anyway it's no big deal. With the A/C kept on high, the cool rooms are a welcome relief when you come back from a day in the heat and the mini bar is always kept well stocked.

The Tanjung has 2 main pools, the sands and the sunset. The large sands pool with a couple of small paddling areas caters for the whole family, whereas the Sunset pool is for adults only. We usually stay away from the pools because they can be too noisy but the sunset pool being adults only was so peaceful and had such a great view of the beach we stayed there most of the time.

As most have said the All Inclusive option is certainly value for money, it almost pays for itself just in the limitless supply of cold drinks (non alcoholic) by the pool or on the beach.

This leads me onto a subject close to my heart.....the food.

The Tanjung has 3 restaurants, The Sands which is mainly Asian cuisine has a wide variety and the Thai Red Curry was superb. Unfortunately during our 12 night stay there must have been about 7 buffet nights (maybe due to the Chinese New Year). We didn't get to eat there as much as we'd have liked.

Based on previous reviews we were looking forward to sampling the food at the Rhu but felt somewhat let down, most dishes looked good but taste wise were nothing special, certainly not 5 star quality. The Beef tenderloin dish I had looked like a frozen TV dinner. The menu which didn't change for the duration of our stay was about a quarter of the selection shown on their website.

Fortunately every cloud has a silver lining and in this case it was called The Saffron, I must admit that when we saw that the cuisine of the Saffron was Mediterranean we thought 'we didn't fly all the way to Asia to eat European food' but after the let down at the Rhu we thought we'd give it a try. Located on the edge of the beach the setting couldn't have been better, the food was so good we ate there for lunch and dinner every day, I can honestly say this is some of the best food I've ever had, easily better than the Rhu and so much more choice. The staff here were extremely helpful and added that extra personal touch to an already wonderful gastronomic experience. All the outside tables get a good view of the sunset but if you want one of the beach front tables you have to book the day before as they're very popular.

There's a fair amount of activities to keep you entertained if lounging by the pool or on the beach is too much every day, from mangrove tours to island hopping, the resort has plenty to keep you busy. For £40 for 8 hours rental the Convertible was very good value and with very few large roads on the island it's hard to get lost and a great way to see the rest of the island. We drove to some of the so called 'better' hotels (Datai, Andaman) to see what the fuss was about and although they have a fancier entrances and lobby areas compared to the understated Tanjung, when it comes to the pools and beach there's only one winner. When you see people from other hotels coming to the Tanjung Rhu beach you know you've made the right choice.

In conclusion I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel if you are planning a trip to Langkawi, the staff were the friendliest and most helpful I have ever met and unlike the Caribbean or the Europe, they seem to genuinely want to make your stay special. While other resorts on the island will be more opulent and luxurious they don't have the beach and they cost twice the price.

As some have said The Tanjung Rhu could do with a lick of paint here and there and will undergo renovation in May, we were told they will keep the resort open by working apartment block by block and should be completed by November. I wouldn't want to stay there during that time, but will be very interested in a return once the work has been completed and a few favorable reviews start to appear on here of course!

My notes could be: simply one of the best resort I ever seen...
Quality of the rooms: excellent.
Staff takes care always of all of guests and is so kind.
Restaurants, based on several cousines, are at top level for food and quality.
Swimming pools are spectaculars: my favourite was the big near the sea, where you can admire the lovely beach and the peaks, often with eagles that fly upon your head (Langkawi symbol is of course an eagle).
Stunning beach: white sands, a long trail will be discover across the sea when low tide arrive at the afternoon and you must walk in the wet sand full of crabs and other sea small animals and reach one of the peak in front of the beach.
Try also to bring a torch at the night and walk across the sand near resort: you will see so many grabs (some of those really big) that run quickly to avoid your foots.
In short, a romantic escape in a lovely place.

We stayed at Tanjung Rhu for our honeymoon in December. We booked the Anjung room with a garden view as that was all they had left at the time of booking. When we checked in, we were surprised to see that we had been given a sea view. It was a nice surprise. The room is so big. We had a jacuzzi and huge bathroom, on the top floor with lovely views of the ocean.

I did find the resort a little busy with 136 rooms. Unless you were up on a sunbed by 9am your chances of getting one were slim. People would also leave their towels on the sunbeds for hours before their return.

I recommend the all inclusive package. Problem is you will be eating all day. Is included for all restaurants and the food is great. We thoroughly enjoyed dining at Tanjung Rhu. It doesn't include alcohol but we found that to be at a reasonable cost and there is happy hour every day.

Every night when you returned from dinner you would have a box of chocolates on your pillow. We were given a lovely photo frame as a honeymoon present and invited for wine and canapés one night to meet other guests and senior management.

We hired a car for the day from Tanjung Rhu to explore the island, there wasn’t much to see in Langkawi except the cable car which would have taken 5 hours as it was to busy so we chose to come back to the resort.

When the tide is out every afternoon you can walk right out into the ocean, was a pleasant walk.

We did a mangroves tour and had a great morning with a lovely host who knows a lot about Langkawi.

We used the health club a few times which was good.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Tanjung Rhu. If you enjoy being on a private beach with no where to go, then this is for you.
