“A difficult challenge”

Owner description: 99 East Golf Club is being temporarily closed while rectification and improvement works are carried out on the existing 9 holes and while the full 18 holes is completed. We anticipate this work to take approximately 12 months. Check out the website for updates and information. Designed by Ross Watson, 99 East Golf Club offers a different golfing experience in Asia, taking many of its design references from Australian and even Scottish links courses. Long wild grasses and reeds dominate the out of play areas together with the signature rice terraces, both distinctive features of this 7,330 yard championship course that integrates native forest, wetlands and an orchard valley, with views both over the ocean and across the entire island to the west. 99 East offers more than a challenging round of golf. The first five holes alone take you to the highest point of the course, and from the tee box to the monster par 5 sixth hole, views extend across the entire island to Mat Cincang in the west and Kuah Bay in the east. From there, you descend through the forest and rice terraces into the lower lying wetlands. The arrival back at the clubhouse returns you to an elevated vantage point with views over the course towards the ocean and the islands beyond, as well as forested mountains to the north.

Played 3 rounds here. Initial price was 290 rm which included golf, cart, water (in an ice cooler). While this is currently a 9 hole course it is certainly challenging given the undulating terrain and changes in elevations. It was dry and the course a bit hard but otherwise in good shape. Certainly presents with an "upper end" feel with the ice chest, hand towels, free tees from the starter, and attitude of the staff. When I played if you returned within 5 days the rate dropped to 190 rm. I think the price is a bit high but reflects the Langkawi costs. Food at the clubhouse was very good and they'll deliver on course. No facilities on the course (even garbage cans!) so prepare to wait until you finish the 9.

I also played the gunung raya course which was about 10% higher in cost for the initial round. It was nice to play a full 18 and it was in better condition. If I wanted a better challenge and better service I'd go with the 99 but gunung raya is a nice but rather boring course.
