Owner description: Unlike other black-sand beaches, this sand isn't volcanic in nature but rather is streaked black by run-off from a nearby hot spring.

“Low tide”
Reviewed 9 April 2014 via mobile

When we there when the tide was low & the sand was quite muddy. Not much black sand thou. There are kids playing around the beach. Big beautiful rock by the beach but careful as they are sharp. When we drive pass the next day it looks much better as the tide came in. Not much of a beach thou. Worth the trip for look/see.

“unexpected beach”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

We had driven past this beach many times but never really stopped to look. There is a small local market beside the road, which sells clothing et. dries foods, (such as Squid and other types of fish), and has small food outlets. This visit we decided to take a look at the beach. It was a real surprise! the beach is extensive and very pleasant, with views along the coastline. The sand is indeed black - mainly in streaks, the sea looks very inviting and access to the beach is good, via newish steps with handrails and a slope for pushchairs /wheelchairs. (which is unusual!)
Panning round the beach with the camera to the right is lovely - to the left is eventually disrupted by the appalling view of a massive concrete factory, which is a real blot on the landscape.
If you go down onto the beach you see things not visible from above: there are very photogenic fishing boats, a very ancient and crumbling wooden jetty and an amazing fisherman's cottage, which has to be see to be believed! It is made entirely of salvage from the sea!

“Disappointing”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

Very little black sand on this beach .... be that the tourists have taken it all, or if you read the information cards, legend has it that the black was caused by fires and the charcoal lies just beneath the normal sand. None of this makes for a great beach especially as the view out is dominated by an enormous cement factory and there are quite a lot of steps to get down to it. And irritatingly you are forced to get to there by walking through a maze of fairly tacky souvenir shops
