Room was a good size. Food in restaurant took a long time to be prepared despite being empty. Staff a little laidback but friendly. You'd need a car to get around.

Being a Genting group hotel, we were having a certain level of expectations prior to arrival. However, the overall rating I would give the hotel is mediocre… at best. Checking in was hassle free, though on one of the days there was only one staff manning the reception desk. I had trouble trying to get a cab, with nobody at the reception desk to help and the concierge was nowhere to be found, while other guests were having troubles getting the room he wants and waiting to be checked in.

The room that we got was quite spacious and clean, though the furniture were ageing and have seen the best days of their useful lives. There is something fundamentally wrong about the layout of the bathroom/toilet, where you have the shower in one room, the toilet in the other, and the wash basin outside with the room proper and combined with the supposed “pantry”… and the mini fridge is under the wash basin!! The amenities are anorexic to say the least… all in all, it just felt like a normal room.

The hotel is situated in the bay of Tanjung Malai, so it has no beach of its own, which was a let down. It apparently does have a private beach nearby, of which you can get a ride to from the hotel. We instead rented a car for a day and visited the nearby Pantai Tengah beach. The breakfast spread is quite varied, though with the usual local/continental flair, the food quality is not bad. You can have your meals beside the pier where you can feast your eyes at the same time on the beautiful view of the sea and nearby islands. There is also an Italian restaurant in the hotel where we had one of our dinners and the food was surprisingly quite excellent. Other than that, you can venture out to the stretch of Pantai Tengah and Pantai Cenang lined with plenty of restaurants and eateries. The one good thing about the hotel is probably its swimming pool, with a playground in the children’s pool where the kids will definitely enjoy.

It was an average experience like I said in the beginning. For the price that we paid, and that even with the internet deal that we got from the website, I’m sure you can find some other hotels that can offer better value.

Room Tip: The sea view rooms would probably be worth the extra money.

Positive:
- location facing the sea for some rooms

Negative – almost every thing:
- severe lack in the maintenance for many years
- dirty rooms, especially carpets, bathrooms tiles, furniture
- bad smell in the corridors
- no sound proof between rooms (you can hear all conversations and more….) ; no sounds proof between room and corridor
- incompetent staff (reception, bell service, breakfast, etc)
- dirty plates from room service stayed more than 24 hours in the corridor
- they don’t care about customers. 48 hours before my arrival I sent an email to get some information about the airport transfert ; I never had any answer ! One day before check-out I completed the guest comments (with very bad comments) and gave it at reception; no reaction from the management even 10 days after my stay (they have my email address…)
- the block 5 is located just above a night-club (Eagle Rock)
- internet is not free !!!! 40 RM for 24 hours

Conclusion:
If you want to ruin your holidays or if you are masochist or both: this is the place to stay.
I was trapped there for 6 nights at Christmas time and had no other choice to stay at Awana as it was the peak season in Langkawi and it was a prepaid booking made in September. Otherwise I would have run away from this horrible “hotel”.

Room Tip: don't go there !!!

Stayed one week at Christmas time 2011.
The room was very basic, clean but in need of renovation. Dirty old carpet. We had garden view. Air-conditioning worked perfectly, bed was comfortable. A lot of noise throught the door from the hall way.
Pool area was nice, beach/pool towels available at 8am every morning.

Breakfast was chaotic on most mornings, particularly at Christmas time when the hotel was crowded. THe breakfast room & staff were not able to handle that many people. Waiting in lines for more food or clean dishes = no fun. Breakfast selection was ok, nothing interesting.

The location was about 15 minutes walk from the beach and the nearest restaurants. We walked on most days and took a taxi back. It was ok, but if i ever return to Langkawi, I will choose a hotel that is at the beach.

The hotel has a small private island about 5 min boat ride from the hotel. However, the tiny beach in stony, and there are only a few sunbeds (mainly in the shade), and no services there. We went there once, but then decided to go to bigger beaches ourselves. There are beautiful white sandy beaches on Langkawi.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the seaside - the view is beautiful.

We were three families consisting of 6 adults and 5 children staying at this resort for 3 nights during 26th december to 28th dec. The Breakfast was excellent with a wide range of delicious food items palatable to theindian taste. The sausages, flavoured yoghurt, french toast, live omlette counter were superb. All the family members really liked the swimming pool area. It also had founains and slides like amusement park and we had a great time having beer in the pool with children frolicking around us.The Hotel was huge and has one of the finest frontage with the sea on three sides. Its located in a thumb jutting out into he sea and has its own jetty called the Awana Jetty catering to cruise ship like 'star cruise' and luxury yachts. The hotel is just 5kms away from the main fun place ie the pentai chenang area and one can reach this hub in a 40 minutes walk or a 10 ringgit taxi. The hotel also has an adventure centre hiring out bikes at 40 ringitts a day. Great place, we loved it.

Room Tip: Take the sea views and rooms nearer to the main block i.e blocks 1,2 or 3 as the hotel is huge and...

The view from out balcony was excellent. You just need to pay extra to get the sea view. The rooms are okay, but i was kinda expecting more. The toilet and the bathroom are separate and the sink where to wash hand is inside the room. The television is old but of course you can still use it. The staff on the small store behind the pool area are so "friendly". I mean "friendly" that they don't even say HI or GOODBYE. Not a word from them. We were buying beers and snacks from there and my father in law said that he heard the girl said a word THANK YOU once. I think they should be more friendly.
I was in the lobby lounge and i met the filipina band singers (MILLION DOLLARS?) I don't exactly remember the name of the band but anyway they are friendly and also from the LOBBY lounge bar.
The breakfast was like continental mic with local food. I loved the different sambals they served every morning.
Overall it was ok.

Room Tip: Tips: When you book some sea view balcony, request for the balcony that is far from the lobby lounge...
