Pondok Keladi is a great place for a holiday. Where else can you watch little boys skimming up palms and throwing down coconuts, see and hear monkeys chattering to each other as they leap from branch to branch, and marvel at eagles building their nests high above the ground. All can be viewed from this six room guest house run by hospitable Dee and his partner Marc.
During our two months – with a break of two weeks in Australia – we attended the Malaysian wedding of Dee’s cousin, met and partied with people of all ages from Australia, Holland, Canada and a curious couple from Germany who were so keen on the place they moved into a tent in the grounds when their room was needed for new guests. Yes, Dee makes you feel like a guest at a house party. He will help you hire a car, advise on the many restaurants on the island and even allow you to access your emails on his computer.
Very reasonably priced, savings can be made by using the communal kitchen to make a cup of coffee, cook a whole meal or heat up an Indian take-away. The roof topped open area is a great place for meeting people with the added attraction of friendly dogs, Lucy, Ben, Reggie and curiously named Gadget, who delights in eating everything including the occasional hot curry.
