“improved Standard Tree House, lovely!”
Reviewed 5 August 2011

Having stayed in the tree house in December last year and liked it very much, my partner and I decided to book the same again this time in July 2011. Booking with the hotel was done in May 2011, reply received, deposit paid and booking was confirmed promptly. We did ask for the Standard Tree House FACING the sea (2 standard tree houses sharing a ladder, so one is facing sea and the other slightly to the left) but was told it is first come first serve basic during check in. So we prayed...

We arrived at the hotel around 1.30pm on a Saturday; the check in was smooth and we got the same tree house which is facing the sea called Meranti! We were so delighted that we got to stay in the same room and needed no help to find the room ourselves. During the short walk to the room, we noticed some renovation going on for the Beach Front room where BIG GLASS window was replacing the previous wooden window which I thought was a brilliant idea! We did try the beach front room for 1 night last time and it was nothing special. But now with the glass window with curtain, one can enjoy the amazing sea view from the comfort of the chalet!

So, we got into Meranti and were pleasantly surprised that it has undergone some minor renovations too! The bathroom is cleaner and has more bath amenities, toilet paper is covered so that it wont get wet during shower, hot/cold shower is good and powerful. This time, the lights at the balcony worked well (they did not work last time and we did not complain cus it was only for 1 night) which was important as we loved the balcony with the amazing view! The safe was not working well, called the reception (no phone in room, called from my mobile) and the maintenance guy came 5 mins later and got it fixed. The mini fridge was working well and so was the kettle. Coffee/tea with sugar/creamer was sufficient. Our neighbour next tree was not too close to our tree so we did not experience any unwanted noise from our tree house, only the sound of beautiful waves outside.

The only thing that freaked me out was the storm on 2nd night, it was so so scary that I thought the roof was going to be blown off or tsunami was coming! The roof did leak a little but nothing major. The housekeeping cleaned our room everyday without prompting and refilled all used items.

Warning for those with large suitcase (but most people go to Langkawi with backpacks), you would have to drag your large heavy bags up to the stairs. As others have stated, the service stops at the front desk and you are on your own. Free wifi in the lobby and no breakfast but plenty of food nearby. There is an indian restaurant at the lobby, tried it once, not bad but wont try again cus it's pricey.

For RM200/night for the Standard Tree House, my partner and I would surely return to the place again. It may not be the best value in terms of facilities but for the uniqueness and that amazing one of the kind view, it is worthy! In fact, we plan to return to the resort in December this year, and will try the Deluxe Tree House for extra RM30. But there is only one Deluxe tree house, so I guess advance booking is needed.
Tip: the deck chairs at the beach are RM10/chair but they are yours for the whole day. Just leave your old towel on the deck if you want to leave the beach and nobody would take it. We did leave the chairs for like half a day and found them intact when we returned in the evening.
Tip: try Sunset BBQ Cruise with Stardust, it's amazing!

We were looking for accomodation close to the action on pantai cenang (Cenang Beach). We started at one end of the beach & walked to the other end, going into places to enquire about vacancies.

Malibest looks pretty horrible from the street, but from the beach we noticed it has a number of beachfront huts and treehouses. We ended up staying there 4 nights, starting in a cabin just one back from the beach (which had solid walls, air con and a fridge - fine but nothing special). The next night we moved to our first tree hut (a standard one). Being elevated and on the beach, with parasailers and jetski-iers passing all day was magic. It had a great balcony to view all the action & was high enough to feel quite private. The downsides were that the stairs (read: ladder) to our hut was very steep. Great for backpackers, not so good with a heavy suitcase, or after one too many beers at Babylon bar just down the beach ;-)

As with this type of accomodation, there were no frills whatsoever. We were lucky to have toilet paper and a working TV & aircon. This tree house also adjoined another, with part of the stairs/ladder shared.

On our third night the Deluxe Tree house became available - well worth taking for the extra $20/night. It is stand-alone, a little less elevated, the room is bigger, lovely balcony over the beach...and it had a hairdryer and ash tray! Not really deluxe by anyone's standards but a really wonderful place to stay, and one of the highlights of our trip. We loved sitting on the balcony with a cold beer at the end of a long day exploring the island.

Downsides to the resort:
empty restaurant, we didn't bother eating there.
No service beyond front desk - you have to get your own luggage to your room.
Various people hanging out on the beach outside all night - nothing sinister, just couples walking along the beach, the odd bonfire surrounded by backpackers, a security guy, children playing on the beach at dawn etc. Not truly private!
A hefty fine if you lose your room key
Smelly drains on the street/at entrance
Construction at the moment - they are upgrading several of the beachfront cabins. They should be awesome when they are finished.
No breakfast, but there are several cafes on the main drag across the road

Upsides:
Friendly, helpful staff at the front desk
Free wi-fi in the lobby
LOCATION - right in the middle of the action. Great beach for swimming and watersports, plethora of restaurants and dining options in easy walking distance.

If you're going to consider it we recommend the 'Deluxe Tree House'.
Having to walk to the mini-mart across the road for supplies (water, snacks etc)

Room Tip: Ask for the Deluxe Tree House. if it's not available, the other Tree houses are pretty good too.

My boyfriend and I have stayed in the Standard Tree House for two nights ^^ can listen to the waves day and night ^^ love the feelings very much~~ Overall the room is clean~~ it would be better if the water pressure is high enough for shower~~ the water pressure will be very low when everyone is back in room for shower during evening~~ A very good location if you love beach very much ^^ can't complain much for RM 200 per night with very good privacy =D

The bungalows here are nice - modern and clean - although the walls are fairly thin, so you can hear your adjoining neighbours quite clearly
.
The location is lovely - directly on the beach - although the beach itself isn't as clean as some others that we have visited in SE Asia.

Unfortunately, we booked in for only 1 night and didn't bother to extend our visit, as they seemed to be rennovating a building right next door to our bungalow, so very loud building works would start early in the morning and continue for most of the day - the noise was even audible from the beach. Also, due to more building works right outside the entrance of the hotel, we were without water for between 1-2 hours in the evening, just as we wanted to get ready to go out.

Also, the resort doesn't have any loungers on the beach (even though the resort literally sits on the beach) so you either have to pay or just lie on the sand - it's not a major thing, just quite inconvenient!

There is no breakfast included in the room rate, so it turns out to be a fairly expensive room for what it is. I think people could find better resorts on Langkawi than this place...

Malibest Resort has the potential to become one of the best accomodation bets in the most happening beach of Langkawi. But severe lack of maintenance and poor service has ensured that it doesnt. Rooms are spacious but tired and with dirty bed linen. Lobby has free wi-fi but the very look of the reception will deter you from spending your holiday here. At the entrance is a restaurant where crappy Hindi songs are played throughout the day. The adjoining beach is okay but it is too full of picnicers during the day. The only good thing about this hotel is its location. But there are plenty of other cheaper options in the same vicinity. Would not have stayed here had we not booked our room in advance.

Room Tip: Go for the treehouses

We stayed for 5 nights in the super deluxe beachfront room (RM 160/night). The room was very spacious, with pretty comfy beds and a great mini fridge (for ice cold water and beer!). The view was amazing, the room was right on the beach, 25 meters distance from the sea. At night we were sitting in front of our room/on the beach with a cold beer, watching the sunset and listening to the sound of the waves...perfect! We had two chairs outside which we also used for some sunbathing during the day. Staff were really friendly, but in case of information on trips etc. they could just only refer us to other travel agents. We did not really try the restaurant since there is a way better (budget) option down the road.

Unfortunately, breakfast is not included but there are plenty of (cheap) options at a short walking distance. WiFi is only available in the lobby, but very fast!

The only thing we disliked a little was that the rooms are quite noisy, we could hear our neighbors and the people chatting on the terrace behind our room. During our stay in June it was not crowded at all, but I can imagine that in high season it can be noisy when guests and non-guests are chatting on the beach, next or in front of the rooms.

Overall a great budget option with maybe the best location of all hotels at pantai cenang. Definitely try to book a super deluxe beachfront room! The view that comes with that room is worth everything.
