Second day at St Regis Langkawi and staying at sunset villa suite 802.

Welcome amenities in the villa included a small bottle of Moet and plantation of fruits.
The villa is very beautiful with a sizeable infinity pool and direct view of the hills. It is not perfect, however. The roof was leaking water and some parts of the wooden panel near the pool were peeling off. I am personally not fussed with this but suggest management to better look after the near new villas or significant refurbishment cost will be down the track. In addition, there's insufficient hot water to fill up the bathtub. This is a design limitation and I guess there's nothing much that can be done.

The hotel complex appears to be modelled on St Regis Bali. It is 80% as grandiose as St Regis Bali but still very good nonetheless. St Regis Bali is one of its kind and being 80% as good is still pretty impressive. Further, St Regis Langkawi appears to be priced at 80% of its counterpart in Bali.

Breakfast menu appears to be a copy of St Regis Bali as well i.e. a buffet breakfast but items could be ordered on a la carte basis. St Regis Bali probably serves the best breakfast bar none in the world. St Regis Langkawi is emulating it but fails in some attempts. The Nasi Goreng and prawn omelette are pretty mediocre by St Regis Bali standard. Freight the master chef from St Regis Bali to Langkawi, please. I would probably stay in this hotel for a month just for its breakfast.

Service is very good overall as with most St Regis hotels. Lattes can be delivered to room and butlers can help with unpacking, standard features of St Regis across the chain.

There is a particular incident of which I am not impressed about. Was going to get Uber to go from hotel to Wonderland Food Store for dinner. Concierge got one of his mates or colleague to drive me there and that cost 25 ringgit. A trip via Uber in a similar type car would have cost 5 - 8 ringgit on an given day. This is the basis on why I am deeming this hotel as very good rather than exceptional. I would have preferred to take a limo transfer to Wonderland Food Store for 100usd then to be ripped off 20 ringgit. This mentality perhaps explains why people rather spend 20 times more on hotel limo transfer than to haggle on the street with cabbies or touters. It's not the money that matters but rather the thought of being ripped off.

All in all, a very good hotel. Just remember to install Uber app to avoid being ripped off 20 ringgit which you would have given in tips anyway.

Room Tip: Take Uber, not Concierge Recommended Taxis

The first impression is Wow!

What a wonderful place!

The staff is the best, so kind and polite the service is spectacular, they are warm and personal, they really try to do the best for you!

Not the best competent but that’s the manager fail-your!

It’s a really relaxing atmosphere and you feel honestly welcome to be a 5star Resorts’s!

The architect is fabulous and the room and beads is nice.

A bad smell in the room like it is moister in the room maybe regarding the climate!

The food and the range can be much better specially when you stay for a longer time.

Good high end resort. Very accommodating and friendly staffs. Concierge was very helpful.

Very nice private beach and pool. No worry of getting beach lounger.

Could do better on alternative entrance to rooms that are on far end of building.

We chose the Villa at the beach for a time-out this month and were blessed with the weather already. The room came with a personal butler service, which even took care of the (un)packing – amazing first impression.

Stunning location with many highlights to offer – just to mention a few:

- Daily activities
- A new beach grill outlet serving fresh seafood
- Water sport activities
- All of their restaurant outlets are amazing while we had to have a Rose Champagner at the hammock – picture perfect scenery and also a nice live-band playing some tunes while the sun is setting down behind an island

A great team spirit it seems as all staff were so friendly and helpful – we enjoyed our stay and went home very relaxed and pampered. I can only recommend the hotel to other travellers and suggest to also check their villas if within the budget, it did make the stay just 100% perfect

We were extremely disappointed with our stay and after two days, decided to move to a different hotel for the remaining 3 days of our trip. We had read the previous reviews and were looking forward to high quality service. Unfortunately, we did not receive that.

The good aspects:
-The property is stunning. The view is amazing and the pool in the pool suite was really impressive. The decor of the hotel was pretty as well.
-While we were disappointed in overall service, we had some spotty moments of high quality, 5-star service from some staff members like the concierge who helped us plan a day activity.

The negative experiences:

Service
Service was lacking across the hotel. At the pool, staff rarely came over to ask if we needed anything. When we did order a drink, they would forget or it would take 25-30 minutes. There was also no stations for water and after struggling to find someone to ask, a waiter came with hot water. The famed St Regis butler service was basically non-existent. We got a note from our butler in our room congratulating us on our honeymoon but never actually met him. The housekeeping staff did not replenish the mini bar or glassware, and one day we came back to find we ran out of toilet paper.

Food/drink
The food options are limited on all menus. There are essentially no snack or small choices. The food was sub-par at best and like others have said, overpriced. The cocktails were also pretty terrible. The margarita tasted like pure sour mix. If you do go, stick with beer or wine. On our last morning before deciding to move we ordered pancakes with a berry compote. Three tiny pancakes came with one grape that was quartered. One grape. That was their version of a compote. For $USD 17. My husband ordered a quiche that was barely edible. We found one decent dish to order while there (Nasi Goreng). The breakfast buffet was okay but after staying at two other hotels in Kuala Lumpur and on Langkawi respectively, it did not compare to other five-star hotel breakfast buffets.

Hotel facilities:
While the pool and decor are nice, the overall facilities are lacking. The bar is not open to guests and there is nowhere for guests to hang out and relax outside of the pool or their room. It rained for quite a bit when we were there and had no space to relax outside of our room at that point. We were just very confused as to why a five-star hotel doesn’t open its bar to guests. Apparently it is only open for special events.

The pool in the pool suite is nice and the room is large and comfortable. The pool area in the suite is well-kept but they do not have coverings like they do in pictures and would not put them up when asked. So it’s not really private. The rooms above you can see because they have balconies and large windows. The man above us was constantly out on his balcony or staring down at us while in our pool. There was a musty smell at times in our room so we had to leave the door open to air it. They have those fire alarms that blink white lasers every 5 seconds in the bedroom which may be typical in some hotels but we found very annoying when trying to sleep.

In general, if you are looking for a typical St. Regis or general 5-star experience, this hotel is not it. The attention to details is just not there. My husband and I stay at a variety of places depending on our needs, from Hiltons to Marriotts to Four Seasons and this was just way below any 3-star experience. As Americans who have stayed at St Regis’s elsewhere across the world, we just could not believe the horrible service. This is not the Regis we are used to. After our second day, we decided to we had to move to salvage our vacation.

We will say that the manager, Adie, was very open and receptive to our complaints and allowed us to cancel the remaining days of our trip without penalty fees. She seemed genuinely concerned and patiently listened to our feedback. Perhaps in time this hotel will earn its name and brand. We ended up moving to the Ritz Carlton for the rest of our stay and found it to be a much better overall experience with an unbelievably friendly and helpful staff. For around the same price, the rooms were in separate classes. We had a $2000 sq ft private pool villa and really enjoyed the rest of our trip.
