What a colorful exotic experience this was , the ladies were out with their menfolk dressed in their beautiful clothes , children well behaved and laughter everywhere . The food was an experience to die for , I had never seen such an array of beautifully presented food on display , the eating was an even greater pleasure , I cannot wait to return , and return I certainly shall. Well done Kota Bharu.

Nice atmosphere, especially during holidays and weekends. Good choice of curries, fish, desserts, nasi goreng and noodle dishes. It is mainly take-away, but the vendors at the side don't matter that you bring your outside food as long as you drink something. Bring your own spoon if you are not used to eating with your hands.
definitely try the stall with deserts: the cake, flan, sweet pumpkin, sticky rice cake... they are all good and very cheap!

If fake football tops and dvd's are your thing then you'll have a better time here than I did, even the food stalls which took a while to locate were not appealing after walking through some of the dirtiest rat and cockroach infested littered streets in Malaysia.

Great food stalls that are very cheap and tasty. Drinks available, quick service. Was a bit difficult to find but was well worth the wandering to find

Like most people, we stayed in Kota Bharu as a transit point for Perhentain Island. Kota Bharu town itself is very close to the border with Thailand. It is not highly recommended that you cross the border at this point due to some issues on the Thai side. It has a few signs in Arabic which was a bit of a challenge as my Bahasa Malay is poor and my Arabic non-existent. The night market was interesting (small) with some very cheap food choices and a amazing wet market close by in the large building on the side of the market. There is more to the market than just the stalls, if you get there at the right time just on night fall you can hear the most amazing cacophony of bird calls which are almost deafening. The strange thing was we could not see the birds as they seam to be inside the roves of the buildings. You can do a bit of people watching and wander the local streets around the market and get a feeling for the town and its inhabitants. Interestingly enough the local cab drivers with 'real cabs' were not very friendly and certainly tried to rip us off even when we negotiated the prices before the trips but the guys using there own cars as 'taxis' were very friendly and stuck to the price they negotiated.
