“Good place, nice pizza next door”
Reviewed 5 February 2014

First of all; make sure you don't go to Kota Bharu at all. If you do, this is a fair choice. The prices are ok, but the location is a bit far away from the city centre. Which is no problem, because there is really nothing to do there. Next door is a fine pizza place which has a funny swiss owner, mostly visited by rich Malaysians and expats. The staff is helpful and nice. They let us book a trainticket on the computer behind the counter and print it. They even brougt us to the trainstation for free in the morning when our taxi wasn't coming! Now that's service! If you ever find yourself in Kota Bharu, this is the place.

We arrived around 8PM and would leave again at 7AM, so we just wanted a cheap hotel where we could spend the night. This place looked decent enough. We had a very warm welcome and he arranged a cheap taxi for us in the morning to go to the jetty. What I didn't like, was the fleece blanket on the bed. Not sure how often these blankets can be washed? I slept without the blanket in pajamas, so problem solved. The walls are indeed very thin, but I sleep with earplugs and it was just for one night anyways so this was not a problem for us.

This place felt dirty, old fashioned and grubby. The room had no windows and was dingy to say the least. We could feel the springs through the mattresses and only a blanket was provided (and we don't think it had been washed). To call this place a hotel we think it should have sheets on the bed and a window! Oh and the TV only had 5 working Malaysian channels. As an aside, ignore Lonely Planet's advice on Kota Bharu, there is nothing of real interest here. The only positive comment about this place is that some of staff were really helpful with our luggage, maps and lifts to the airport, but others just seemed uninterested!

Old fashioned place not in the city center but at 10 min walking. very kind and helpful personnel but the place is really poor and dirty. No windows in the room, if you have the possibility don't sleep there. In general try to avoid Kota Bharu, not really interesting.

We stayed here as a family with two small children on our way from Thailand through Malaysia back to Singapore. The hotel is nothing grand but serves the purpose of staying somewhere cheap and central. Yes the walls are thin and there are no top sheets, there are no windows but this is to be expected at the price we paid. Our room was on the ground floor thankfully as there are no lifts.

The staff are more than accommodating and went out of their way to take us around the city assisting us in buying bus tickets, taking us to a western place for breakfast, driving us to a culture show, markets, kite shop and anywhere else we wanted to stop. Very helpful especially with having two small children. We were also driven to the bus stop across town.

The pizza place next door is run by a Swiss couple and their food is outstanding - BYO wine or beer as its a dry place. Try the jungle salad you wont be disappointed.

Overall our stay was comfortable but made enjoyable by the staff.

Room Tip: Choice a ground floor room, away from reception.

I have stayed in some sketchy places after backpacking trough India and the rest of Asia extensively, and this place was one of the worst places I have ever been. Rooms disgusting, sheets clearly had not been cleaned in god knows how long, carpet felt moldy and worn, bathroon not very nice, no sheets just a ratty old quilt thing, walls paper thin and could hear every single thing from our neighboring rooms and was hardly able to sleep at all because of some lady coughing through the whole night. I would pay not to stay here, awful! Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, but who cares when all you want is a clean place to put your head at night?
