The Zenith Hotel, Kuantan
Ranked #1 of 44 Hotels in Kuantan
Reviewed 21 June 2012

Stayed with friends for a weekend break away from KL. Before I go on I must be fair and state it was a public holiday so the hotel was busy. Real busy. First off, finding the hotel is pretty easy: Its the tallest building next to the biggest mall. So food options are plentiful on the doorstep. Car parking underneath the hotel with direct access to the lobby is convenient. I think the signage for the car park may have been done for a different hotel and sent to the Zenith by accident but they put them up anyway. We had adjoining rooms and booking and check in was fairly straight forward and the reception staff friendly, if still seeming like they were working things out on their second week. Room was a decent size, bathroom was large, with an excellent shower. Bed very comfortable and spacious. Breakfast and food generally was good. They provided a nice wooden cot eventually after ringing three times to check it had arrived. It hadn't but thanks for asking!
The main dining area is dry but they helpfully relocated us to the italian upstairs where you could order beer and wine. service was friendly and efficient, though the staff were still learning and needed a little confidence eg bought me a beer I was hanging for, lad handed it to me but before I could take it a lovely lady whisked it away for 10 minutes whilst she found me a beer mat. Nice thought but give me the beer! The reason for the three stars is the pool is simply too small for the hotel and the lifts are like buses. One comes every 20 minutes. Really, they are terrible. At breakfast the queue for people trying to get breakfast and those waiting for a lift just merged in to a mass of bodies. It's a great conference hotel, but for a weekend break hit the Hyatt.

This hotel look beautiful from the exterior and was new landmark of Kuantan town. Hence, maintain and improve the 5 star hotel standard need be more alert from back and front office services and quality and security.

We were attending a wedding reception that was held in the Grand Ballroom of Zenith, so stayed there for one night.

The hotel is visible from far off as it's an imposing 2 block tower building, the 2nd block being an unoccupied office building. The car park is large, but the signs leave much to be desired - as there are 3 buildings in the same compound, there are a lot of entrances and exits, and the painted arrows on the road as well as the signs to the parking are quite confusing. Parking is free (for now), as the barriers have not been activated yet. The 'free' part is good, but the lack of security is alarming - there are no security guards, and anyone can drive in and out of the car park, which means your car isn't very secure if left overnight.
Being from KL, perhaps I'm being paranoid about safety in car parks, but this place was quite scary if you were walking to your car at night alone.

Checking in was initially very slow - it was 1pm, and there were only 2 counters attending to the hordes who were checking out and in. In the end, one guest started berating a manager loudly, asking 'how can this be a 5 star hotel, you only have 2 counters operating during this peak time' ..... and lo and behold, suddenly one staff after another emerged from a door and there were about 6 counters in operation in no time - and the queue was settled in no time as well. Why did it need someone to lose their temper before action was taken?

After the slow start, the checking in went smoothly. In fact, I must say that even though we were early, we were given one of our two adjoining rooms first, with a promise that the key to the 2nd room would be sent up to us shortly.

The lobby is very spacious and has very nice decorative items using flowers and spices, and the corridors were also nice and bright as they overlook an atria-type space.
The rooms were of medium size, but were bright and cheerful. The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was spacious. There was a rain shower as well as a regular shower, set outside the tub, which was a nice touch. The only problem was that the hot water seemed to run out after 1am - when I had a shower at 2am, there was only cold water. There's a nice makeup mirror in the bathroom, unfortunately there is no proper lighting over it so you get a 'big' view of your face in dim light!

The view from the room wasn't so good, we faced the office block and had a construction site just beside us. However the sea could be seen off to the distance, so that was a saving grace!

The reception in the Grand Ballroom was a real let down. The service was terrible, they must have been very short staffed. Only the appetizer, soup and rice had to be served, as the other dishes were in a lazy susan on each table, yet the service was soooo slow.

The worst part was that the staff are obviously not trained. Despite being slow, they should have at least served all at guests at a particular table at the same time. Instead, what they did was serve one or two people, and then the rest of us had to wait up to 5 minutes for our portions to be brought. The people who had food couldn't eat theirs, as the rest were still waiting, and when the other portions arrived, their food would have got cold.
We had a young child and an elderly person at our table - if they had to serve one or two people first, you'd think they would serve these two - but no, they put food in front of the 'regular' adults first! And we were by no means the only table facing this problem!

The food was also quite bad. There was a sweet and sour fish dish where the fish pieces were coated in batter and fried - but the batter was so thick and tough that it was un-cuttable. The prawns didn't seem all that fresh, and the lamb dish was full of bones.

There were quite a few 'manager'-like people standing at the back of the ballroom, and it was surprising that they did not seem to be responding to the poor service - I would have expected them to be more proactive.

Room service that night was also bad. We ordered a diet coke and lasagna, but after a half hour wait, received a phone call saying that the kitchen was out of lasagna! When asked why it took them so long to let us know, we were told that they had just started processing our order! We order a noodle dish instead, and it took about 45 minutes before it was sent up!

The buffet breakfast the next morning was much better. We'd been warned to expect a very slow egg counter, and dishes that were not refilled, so were pleasantly surprised to find that we got our eggs done very fast, and most of the dishes remained filled. The variety was good, and most of the food was tasty.

All in all, a nice hotel which could do better with staffing - perhaps they are short staffed, but the management should do something about it as otherwise, this will mar guests experiences.

Zenith opened last year very near to the town center and smack infront of the newest and biggest shopping mall - East Coast Mall. You can just walk across for food and shopping if you don't like hotel food.
Next to the Sultan Ahmad convention center - very convenient for meetings and functions. The Malaysian Orthopedics was having theirs at the time.
Front desk staff was very helpful during check in - informative too as they are locals and can tell you the best eating places in town.
The deluxe room was the usual size but the layout feel spacious. Loved the toilet - thoughtfully design to suit the Asian habit, the shower and tub are separate. Iron, robe, slipper and extra pillow is provided in each room. Bed is firm and comfortable.Free wifi.
Not much info in room about the spa - a pity as we would appreciate the promo.
Breakfast was fairly good but the egg station was a tad slow to start.
Wish they put something in the fridge - even the complimentary mineral water is left on the table.

Room Tip: rooms ending with 1 to 9 face west ( and pool) 10 to the rest face east.

Stayed 3 nights. The staff are friendly. The room has a comfortable bed ensuring a good night's sleep. Wi-Fi connection is good.

Although this is a new hotel, several issues need to be addressed:
1. Wallpaper over the bed-head is fraying.
2. Wall is dirty in several spots with paint chipped off at the edges.
3. Carpet has a strong odour and is stained in several areas.

I stayed in the Titanium Club Room on the 21st level over a weekend. The room was big and clean. The Titanium Club lounge on the same level was cosy, and it came with a balcony that offered a very good view of Kuantan city. The lounge staff were also friendly and professional.

This 1.5-year hotel has all the potential to become a top 5-star hotel, given its amenities, facilities and its location of being just opposite a big shopping mall (East Coast Mall). However it just gave me a strong feeling that it is being managed by a stingy no-star budget hotel boss...

During the check-in, my request for both English and Chinese newspapers in the following morning was flatly rejected. I could choose only one set of newspaper. I was a little taken aback, given that I had paid more than double the price of their normal room for a better club room, and they were not willing to give me an extra set of newspaper that cost less than $1...

Upon checking into my room, it was pleasant to find a fruit platter and a welcome note on the table, an effort that many hotels would put in to please their guests. However, as the fruit platter looked like it had been left there for some time, I decided to just leave it alone. And guess what? It remained there for the next 2 days. The housekeeping staff did not bother to take them away ever though the watermelon was rotting.

I was also quite puzzled why they provided only exactly 2 sachets of instant coffee in the room. They gave us 2 small bottles of mineral water in the room on day 1, but did not top up on subsequent days. The same goes to the toiletries. There were only a few sheets on tissue paper in the tissue-box, and they did not bother to top up when it was empty. Basically they did not top up any expendable item in the room after day 1.

Overall I must say my stay at the hotel was still a very pleasant one. I have to admit that my complaints here are actually quite trivial. But it is the failure to take care of such simple things that highlights the hotel's lack of heart to attend to its guests' needs.

Will I go back to this hotel during my next trip to Kuantan? Well, if it is within these few years, I would still say yes. But, if it is further now the road when this hotel becomes older, it would be a definite NO since it would be just another old hotel with no character and a service level that does not measure up to the price one will be paying.

Room Tip: Get a high floor facing the sea if possible for a better view of the city and sunrise in the morning...
