“Avoid and proceed to Pangkor Island”
Reviewed 31 December 2012

I guess I liked the idea of not having to drag all of our luggage over to the island for one night in the middle of a road trip, but it was a mistake. The ferry is very convenient and seems to run like clockwork. Plenty of big cab-vans and the prices are all flat and fair. Seems like loads of good options for a wide range of travel classes.

In summary, Pangkor Island good, Marina Island bad.
Best Western is just bad value for this general location. The 3-br apartments are HUGE, but they fitted a tiny full size bed into a gigantic master bedroom. The master bedroom shower and bath did not have working hot water, which we didn't bother complaining about for the one night we stayed because we had 2 other working showers (every room ensuite). The pools are tiny, the beach unappealing, and there is very little around for food/night life.

You've been warned.

My family and I stayed at a 3-bedroom "apartment" which was very spacious, comfortable and clean. However, the design of the master bedroom bathroom is a bit mind boggling. A half glass door covers the shower and the floor outside the shower tends to get wet after someone has a shower. The shower sprayed water all over the place and the sink leaked. The apartment had a large sitting area, dining area and a sort of kitchenette with lots of empty cabinets and drawers. No cutlery or crockery provided. There are no washing machines and dryers in the apartment. However, I noticed a washing machine on the second floor which presumably can be used by guests. Breakfast was horrible and I ended driving to Manjung and Simpang Empat for breakfast rather than eat in the coffee house.

Located on man-made island. An average resort (apartment) suitable for short break with small family. The view from the apartment is quite ok. Our unit facing the new jetty / marina and Pangkor island. The choice for breakfast is quite limited if I put the price into consideration. The food taste is average. My kids love the pool eventhough it is a bit too small for a sizable resort. Conclusion - i will not come again if i have given another choice...

Room Tip: Go for higher units, better view

I stayed here with friends for a business trip. The rooms are very spacious (we had the one room suite) and there's even a small "maid's room". Pros - very quiet, clean with polite staff. Cons - kitchen with no utilities (when asked, the staff said that the kitchen 'could' be stocked for long staying guests), weird rain shower bathroom configuration, hard to find eats. If you want to get food, you have to travel 10 minutes into Lumut town. The only other alternative is Kampung Kayan Steamboat (not open for 2 of the 3 days we were there) and Sze Chuan Seafood - did not try this as there were too many recommendations of must try's in Lumut.
The pool is relatively empty. The mermaid statues a little creepy at night. Lagoon is good as it's quite shallow even quite a ways out.

Room Tip: Rooms that face the 'beach' get the morning sun but I am not much of a morning person so I p...

Stayed over at this hotel for only 1 night. Expected something bad from some of the reviews here but the hotel is definitely stay able especially not for long periods of time. However, there are some points to note here. Almost the name may state Island Resort, the place is nothing near that as many facilities are lacking and the rooms are (I suspect) built as a condominium and converted into a hotel. The walkways to the rooms are exactly as how a condominium looks and feels like.

Good points - staff are pretty polite. Clean. One of the better places to stay in Lumut in my opinion. The room that I stayed in has a queen bed as well as a single bed in a separate room

Bad points - the place is pretty bare, can get pretty echo-ey especially when people starts shouting or talking out loud along the corridor (which I experienced during my stay). Wifi is pretty spotty but it works. Breakfast should have a better spread and lots of flies

From the hotel to Lumut Jeti is approximately 10 minutes.

Just dreadful
How on earth is this rated as the best hotel in Lumut?

Marina island is a half built wasteland with no facilities to speak but the view over to the islands is nice if you get a sea facing room

The hotel itself has a very low standard of everything

Room:- huge but totally devoid of furniture which leave a space big enough to park a car.
What furniture you have has some surreal touches like a bedside lamp but electrical outlet to plug it into.
An alarm clock that is on the opposite side of the room from the bed making it impossible for anyone who doesn't
have superhuman vision to read it from the bed.
TV which awful picture quality

Food:- I went down for dinner at the not unreasonable hour of 19:30.Unfortunately the buffet had already been visited by
what appeared to be a plague of locus, leaving just debris and an unseemly large amount of flies hovering around
the remnants of the food. Breakfast wasn't much better with a very limited choice.

In fairness to the hotel the staff seemed generally ok if a little slow.

So in short, the rooms are barn like, the food is awful and the location is a building site.

1.0 Pangkor Marina Island,
2.0 Best Western Marina Island Resort, &
3.0 Scuba Diving in Pulau Sembiln with a Master Scuba Diver Trainer, Ayie from Quiver Dive Center

(1) Pangkor Marina Island - Dock your private yacht in front of this resort

Docking a 53ft. Xclusive 10 yacht cost MYR53 per day, and electricity is MYR10 per day. The fuel cost is MYR2.85 per litter, and they will come to you. For hiring additional ground labor crews support services, there will be a charge of MYR100 per crew per day. For your regular yacht’s upkeeps and maintenances, and other services arriving at each port, they can do all the necessary arrangements onsite. This has eased our onboard crews’ lots of jobs, and allowed them to have some time off as well. Advance notice is best.

(2) The Resort: - Service Excellent, but don’t expect full resort’s facilities and in-room amenities.

2.1 – Resort’s Exterior
The exterior of this so called “resort” doesn’t look like a resort at all. In fact, it looks more like a regular international 3 star hotels’ building. Nothing very attractive! The exterior overall paint jobs quality is poor, and can see some very obverse water stains, marks and patches.

2.2 – Resort’s Room
The 1 Bedroom Apartment don’t have the so called “apartment concept”. Although there is a separation between the living room and the bedroom, however, there is a king sized bed in the living room, and an extra super single sized bed in the acture bedroom itself. The living room does not have any sofa, but has 2 single chairs and a coffee table. Thus, there are writing desk, vacant mini bar / empty mini fridge, and a kitchen counter with no cooking facility at all. I can only make coffee and tea. However, they can stock your mini-bar upon your requests. The television doesn’t have any cable / satellite channel. There is no CNN or BBC channel either. It only has Malaysia’s local channels.

Bathroom:-
The bathroom’s layout is not very practical. However, there is a rainforest shower head in the middle of the bathroom. After a shower, the entire bathroom will be wet, and there is no non-slip mat in the bathroom. Otherwise, it is pretty basic.

2.4 – Resort’s Facilities
There is a swimming pool, but is small. There is also a gym, but with basic gym’s equipments only. Don’t expect any more than that! Of course, there are meeting rooms and function halls in the resort’s premises.

2.5 Resort’s Restaurant
There is only one Food & Beverage Outlet. Surprisingly, the food is delicious, and the foods’ presentations are very innovative. Right next to the resort is the Lagoon Beach Bar. At night, you can order your favorite cocktails and local beers, and chill on the sand, enjoying the peace and local’s fresh sea air next to the man-made lagoon.

2.6. Resort’s Human Asset - Services
The resorts’ employees are truly friendly, and the services are excellent! In fact, most of them can even remember my name, and my room number. Any of my additional personal requests, they did take notes, and I don’t even need to repeat my requests. They remembered it all. Truly all of them have shown their hospitality competency’s skills – with the MALAYSIAN HOSPITALITY concept.

2.7 Would I come back to this Resort?
Certainly I would love to come back to stay with them. Although, the Resort’s facilities and in-room amenities are to the minimum standard, I would truly say their individual services sure make me feels like “Home-Away-From-Home”. Couldn’t be any more I would ask for.

(3) Scuba Diving in Pulau Sembiln- The 9 Islands with Quiver Dive Center.
Located streets away from this Resort, there is a Dive Center called Quiver. They can do private dives upon your request, and provide excellence safety of standards and services. Alternative, you can take your private yacht. At the same time, their speed boat can also take you to Pulau Sembilin just less than an hour. Light House and White Rock are the most popular dive sites in this location. However, you can also head out to Pulau Pangkor to do your private dives. Quiver’s Dive Teams will know where are the best locations in this site for you to do your diving. Above all, Quiver can cater all your diving requirements and needs. A day with 3 Dives hiring full set of equipments will cost MYR370 per person all inclusive. On that day, I was diving with Ayie, a Master Scuba Diver Trainer with Quiver Dive Center. Recently, Qiver had received their 7th PADI Members’ Award during the 2012 Malaysia International Dive Expo.

Upon Conclusion:-
I have no any regret of arriving at this destination. From the beginning to the end of of this destination, there isn’t any disappointment at all, especially mingled with the friendly Malaysian local residences at this location, and that is all I am asking for. Not all 5 star hotels and resorts do provide the additional personal touch of services, like remembering your name, your room number, your regular requests, your favorite drinks. I feel just right at home in this resort. As for the diving, the experiences are manifest!

Room Tip: Choose the room with the Beach View instate of the Marina View. Beach View has sun rise, while the...
