“Misleading website”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2009

Hi. I don't usually post reviews of hotels I've stayed in, but this time, I had to WARN people about the trap that is Puteri Bayu Beach Resort (PBBR).

I had the misfortune of staying in this place for two weeks (17/4/09 - 30/4/09) for a Government-sponsored course. I had looked up their website and was looking forward to spend an enjoyable time there.

Upon arrival, I was appalled to see the dingy lobby. It took us more than an hour to check in. However, the worst was yet to come. The room assigned to us was small, with two single beds, covered in bedsheets that had seen far better days. The bathroom appliances were broken, with moss and soapslime covering the tiles. Nothing in the room looked or felt clean.

The food served was merely average, with the breakfast menu repeating itself over the next two weeks.

The sole saving grace was the free wireless internet service, with decent speed. I could not have survived without it.

There is no gym/spa. The beach strip is not much. Visitors are better off walking to Pasir Bogak, a public beach which is adjacent to the hotel.

I would not come back here again. I'm just thankful I didn't spend any money for this trip.
Stay away, people.

Externally this hotel should have been idyllic. Wooden chalets close to the beach, nice swimming pool. However, the catering was apalling. It took 2 hours to serve two items from the extremely limited menu. The first meal came after an hour and bore no resemblance to what was described on the menu other than it had noodles which were covered in soya sauce and was inedible. We were told the fish and chips would follow shortly. They arrived an hour later and we can only assume that someone was sent off to the nearest shop to buy them. The breakfast was equally apalling and sandwiches we ordered for a snack lunch again bore no resemblance to what we had asked for.

The first night we were there a Monday we were spared the 'in house entertainment as it was their off night. Unfortunately not the second night. Placed in the reception area it was so loud it was painful to walk past the amplifiers. We were then subjected to the 'boom-boom' of the bass in our chalet. As no one was listening to them it fortunately finished at 10.00pm. However at this point the fish restaurant across the road started up its kareoke at full blast. When we complained to reception they said there was nothing they could do as it was across the road and it would go on until 1.00am. At this point, midnight we checked out and moved to a hotel around the corner in order to get a night's sleep. We left Pangkor the next day, concluding that wherever one stayed one would be subjected to other people's appalling music/ak.

  • Liked — The beach and swimming pool
  • Disliked — The food, the unpleasant 'in house' music, the external musak

The swimming pool not very good maintain. luckly they have their own beach, no need to walk so far like other hotel. Near the hotel got souvenior shop and also seafood restaurant. The breakfast just average. the staff very friendly. Overall exprience just average.

My sister arranged for a 2N/3D getaway for our small family of 5 adults and 2 little kids, and we stayed here. The service is slow, just checking in takes 1/2 hour. The walk to our room soon showed us what to expect. We could see all the wooden room doors we past were jaded with the top layer of wood lifting of the door and curling up. Both rooms were ok with tile floor and the usual old and faded wood furnishing. The beds seems clean but do smells and feels old. The toilet is ok, reasonably sized with 2 shower (a plumb-in and an electrical one). But the wooden door wouldn't close due to the wood rotting away at the hinges. The first room we got given had a huge patch of mouldy stain on it's wall, must be the wetness coming thru from the toilet, and the room smelt of wet mouldy smell. I requested for a room change by calling the front desk, but the reply at the other end of the phone (in Malay) "Cannot change room, No more rooms. All the rooms is the same and there's nothing wrong with the wall. It's normal". By now my patience snap and told him to come now to my room and tell me this huge dark mould stain on the wall is a standard feature of all thier rooms and that I do not believe they cannot find us another better room in this great big hotel!! Of which, 10 minutes later, they call back to say they found us another room, which was just a door away- next door!!! Bth rooms aircon not cool at all and both room smelled musty throughout our stay.

Now, we have 2 little ones with us, and of course the attraction will be the pool. The pool area was just a bad as the rooms. There were tiles lifting everywhere, covers missing from the little side drain that the pool over spills into. Cigarette butts everywhere, they obviously didn't clean this area daily! The wooden dck chairs provided around the pool is old and has bits of wood missing, some with nails sticking out. The water fall was not working, leaving it to be a sight for sore eye, standing there in it;s huge concrete sad form!

The housekeeping didn't lock our door after cleaning. Excuse being that, they didn't know some of the locks is faulty and didn't auto lock themselves. And we have lost some money in the form of 2 missing ang pow (red packet), which was silly enough to have been left behind by my brother. The housekeeper was not apologetic but very aggresive and defendsive, even it's thier fault for not locking the door. The manager was so laid back, he wasn't of any help at all. Overall the management had a "couldn't be bother attitude". The GM's offer was a refund of just 1 room/ night or they are just as happy and have no problem should we want to make a police report. We took the refund of 1 room/night and make the report. As expected, the police is "familiar" with the hotel, hence nothing happen! What a waste of time!!!

All in all I will say, the pictures on the brochure is very deceiving. Given a choice , I would have moved somewhere else, even if it were to cost more money but considering my sis put alot of effort into this holiday so we just didn't have the heart to kick up a fuss. I personally think this hotel is a health hazard, the pool is an accident waiting to happen.

Otherwise, Pangkor Island was lovely. We found some very cheap and good seafood restaurant just a walk up from the hotel. And we were glad it was just a 2 night stay, and not 3 nights as we originally planned.

This "resort" has all of the ingedients to make it a great place to stay, however, maintenance was very poor. A few examples: landscaping was full of weeds, bathroom was dirty with questionable plumbing, wonderful looking water slide was out of order (permanently?) and there was an overall feeling of shoddiness. The room was a little dark and could have been cleaner, but overall comfortable and spacious (Garden Chalet). The beach was really nice and we enjoyed the shade trees and calm waters for our young kids.

Staff was friendly.

Breakfast was horride: cheap chicken nuggets, cheap sausages, one type of fruit and if you were lucky scrambled eggs. It was presented in an very unappetizing manner. The fresh roti however was excellent. Still it was a poor way to start the day. We opted not to eat there at any other time as a result so I can only comment on breakfast.

This place could be great with some major and lots of minor maintenance and a better breakfast. I wouldn't stay there again until I here things have changed but if you end up there it's just OK.

We recently went in December 2007. Thank God, little rain, in spite of flooding elsewhere in Malaysia.

The hotel is generally OK, but do inspect the rooms before moving in. There is an insect screen attached to the bathroom window externally, but some of the screens are ill-fitting, leaving a gap for unwanted guests. The twin bed room we booked had a lot of mosquitoes entering in because of this, plus a leaking pipe generating mildew in the toilet. The layout made things crampy.

So we asked and the adjoining room, with a double bed was much better - screen in place, roomier etc. The family unit, with a queen and a single was even better - but way pricier - so it's for the kids! But beware, no reading lamps...

In retrospect, this hotel was a good choice as there were many (5? not counting hotel eateries) restaurants within walking distance. Although Telok Nipah has a nicer beach, there was only one food establishment of restaurant standard. Also, it's a short walk to Pasir Bogak beach, whereas for the other hotels here, you had to walk a road about 100m to the beach.
I liked the hornbills coming in close to feed.

A round island trip is recommended and for M$70 for 5 people, we had a chatty taxi-cum-guide (if possible, make sure he speaks the same language(s) as you do) who showed us some interesting sites.

As for the beach itself, I would rate this lower than Redang and Tioman on the east coast.

At 11:30am there was a very loud noise coming from the water pump just about 5 feet away from the chalet that my family were staying. When we asked the front office when will this noise end, she said in 30 minutes's time. However, we couldn't bear the noise as we needed to get some naps before checking out for our long journey to Penang. Due to lack of sleep, we requested to extend check-out time at 2pm. The front desk told us that from 12:30pm onwards we will be charged RM50 until 2pm, and one day charge (RM250) until 6pm. Not only we couldn't get peace in the resort, eventhough we paid a high rate for it; we were given such strict conditions and unfriendly treatment.
