It was a wonderful family time. Enjoy the nice late afternoon tea, took memorable photos, chatted about life and travel plan. Tea choices are magnificent. We all liked our respective choices, got to taste a bit of each other too.... surely delicate tasting.

Pastries, sandwiches n scones are delightful although we think taste could be improved, given the hotel status. Sandwiches bread were kind of 'dry'. Service was good.

The first night dining at 1885, was for a "Music Soiree". My husband I were staying at the E&O
and thought that it might be fun. It was.
It was a jazz group who played and they were fabulous.
The food was a set menu and that was terrific.
The service, couldn't fault it.
Old world, silver service dining at its best.
We decided to eat there again with the al carte menu and again, food and service was superb.
Even if you are not staying at the hotel, put your glad rags on and have a special evening at 1885.
It is worth a visit.

Four of us went to 1885 as our last meal in Penang at the end of a great few days in the sunshine. 1885 offered a real step back into colonial history. The background of the hotel is worth researching before you go, just to give you some background on why it's positioned where it is and the type of people that it designed to serve.
Whilst not the least expensive restaurant on the Island, I would put it as best value. We selected different dishes for each course and no one was disappointed. Portions are exactly the right size, quality is exemplary and presentation is as good as you'll find in any restaurant in the world. The one thing that puts this restaurant above most others is the service. Attentive without being intrusive, suggestive without being pushy and all of it with great humour.
If you only visit one place to eat on Penang Island, make sure it's 1885.

Brilliant, attentive service in an amazing building. Lovely choice of tea and the most amazing edible delights - sandwiches, scones and little sweet treats all while looking out onto beautiful gardens and across the water. Just divine.
Thankyou E&O, we look forward to returning on our next visit.

Hi tea with my partner is always a highlight when we travel,as we both love the splendour of it & it's overall enjoyment.
This was again so @ 1885 in the magnificently restored Eastern & Oriental Hotel on the seashore in Georgetown Penang Malaysia.
I first visited the E & O as it was more commonly known in 1974 & the recent refurbishments & new infrastructure is very impressive.
It has restored all the glory that the E & O enjoyed in the late 1880's,1900's,2000's & into the 21Century.
Our Hi Tea was fantastic, with the usual - cucumber sand witches, vol u vonts.smoked salmon, lots of lovely cakes of many descriptions ,not forgetting the beautiful scones ( plain & sultana) with lots of jam & cream enjoyed with delightful Jasmine (her) & English Breakfast tea for myself.
The service was sublime & the price very reasonable.
A must when you visit Penang & is highly recommended.
We will certainly return over the next few years as our ongoing travel takes us back to this Pearl in the Orient.
