Stayed here 3 times now doing the dreaded visa run from Phuket.i have stayed in 3 different styles/levels of rooms here and all have been more than acceptable.Got lucky once and was given room D10 I believe it was.Absolutely stunning.Beautiful decor, full size jacuzzi, desk top computer, leather couches.Simply luck of the draw when you're on the visa run though.
Food was very average and hotel staff not overly friendly though.

I stayed one night in this so called "boutique" hotel. I was supposed tO stay longer but found it too bad to stay longer. Rooms are very basic are there is nothing tasteful or comfortable. The staff are unpleasant and careless. The anagement when approached is not considerate and seem to be only concern by the ringits or euros from the guests. They also offer bus services to various destination but the same applies, staff in the travel bureau attached are hopeless and arrogant. The hotel is fairly well located in the middle of chulia street, but that s the only advantage of the hotel. Toursists and travellers will find way better venues for their stay in Penang. Very disappointing!

We moved here for our last night in Georgetown because of the location which is really convenient. First impressions were good as the lobby area is pretty impressive with a fish pond and fountain and antique furniture throughout the teak hallways...... However the room, although clean was definitely not 4* standard - don't know what constitutes a "boutique" hotel but a mirror in the bathroom to enable a shave would have been handy. Light reflects through the bathroom screens so it's like sleeping in a lighthouse at night and pretty noisy as well. Breakfast was mediocre and actually the worst during our 3 week Malaysia visit. I have to agree with Asiantravelmate who said that the owner of this place doesn't care about her customers - they are only interested in taking their money, the majority of which looks like it comes from Visaruns - stay away if you're a normal tourist.

This hotel was one of our favourite places to stay during our two weeks in Malaysia; really grand but quirky heritage style hotel with interesting oriental / traditional malay decor right in the heart of town.

The staff were very friendly and helpful so I am surprised to read a review suggesting otherwise. They organised our taxis, organised for us to stay an extra night in the same room and made us a take-away sandwich for our early morning departure.

The room was very large and comfortable and had everything you would need. The location was great, right by China Town and next to some of the best areas of George Town. Chulia Road is a great place for hawker Street food.

Would go back again!

Don't stay and book at Banana!! The owner of this place doesn't care About her customers. They are only interesting in taking more money from their customers. No service at all, unfriendly staff. Offers terrible tours and don't follow appointments.

Agoda has this rated at 4 stars; Trip Advisor has it at 3.5 stars. Personally, I think they are both being rather generous, by more widely accepted standards. I have often stayed in four star hotels and most are in a completely different league from the Banana Boutique Hotel. However, the hotel is old, as are most of the buildings in Georgetown. It is ornate in Chinese influences, the rooms are a bit garish but clean and functional and it is convenient for the downtown area (many of the surrounding hotels are 1 star). The staff are polite and generally helpful.
I feel it is a reasonable pit-stop if you are only staying in Georgetown for a night or two and you are on a moderate budget. Anymore time than that and I, personally, would certainly choose to stay somewhere a bit more, really four star (I wonder what the 1 star hotels are like!!)

On an aside, this experience was similar to others I have had in that I booked a deluxe king room as a deal through Agoda and when I arrived I was given a twin room for the first night. When I questioned this I was moved to a deluxe king the next day. This has happened to me before with other hotels who have claimed that they are not at fault and that Agoda as the booking agent, should make any refunds as it was booked through them. Usually, I am told that it was a limited offer only for that class of room and that the lesser standard room I have been given, usually costs more than the booking fee I have paid and so no refunds are ever given. It does seems to have happened to me a few too many times now to be coincidence!

Room Tip: Bring sunglasses and wear them indoors.
