“" Good Location"”

We stayed here for 2 nights. The Hotel quite old & well maintained. Room are spacious. The Royal Hotel Penang located easily excess to town area and shopping location. Penang are heaven for foods. We enjoyed Nasi Kandar, Masala Tea, Roti Canai, Indian foods and many more.

Overall we enjoyed our stay here and will come again.

I have stayed at this hotel twice in the last few years. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Penang. It is centrally located and which makes getting around easy.

- Friendly staff
- Good breakfast buffet
- Clean
- Safe

Overall had a pleasant stay which meet my expectations.

I was a guest in June, stayed in the hotel for almost a week. The hotel chargers like a 4 star hotel but can not be mentioned even as a 2 star hotel, I have stayed in way better budget hotels that could accommodate to its guest requirements, not so "Royal" after all.

Requested for ironing service, told me off that i was too late in sending in my shirt for ironing, and blatantly told me to have it done else where, cause it will be cheaper after all. I didn't know the hotel staffs were so considerate over my pocket budgets instead of making their workplace more efficient.

Hotel breakfast was terrible.

Hotel location was horrible, if you want to see Penang, please don't stay here, even if its dirt cheap !... Tons of way better hotels that charge you way lesser and you be smack in the middle of the action.

Drive way could not accommodate coach/buses. We came in a huge group of 30 people, our coach had to alight everyone outside of the drive way, it rained, and nothing could have been done !

Our booking was done under one persons name almost 2 - 1 months before our arrival, yet we had to wait till 4pm to get our rooms ! Yet a 4star hotel could have gone beyond its boundaries to accommodate its guest, it did not, it chose to tell its guest off that room check in timing is only at 3pm ! House rules... which I feel could have been applied accordingly. Since it was such a huge group.

I go back to Penang almost twice a year, by far this is my worst stay in a Penang hotel. Disappointing stay.

Room Tip: My tip is stay away from this Hotel !

We stayed 3 nights in Hotel Royal Penang in Jun 2014. Sadly, there were more negatives than positives.

Negatives
Service during check in was bad. When we tried to check in at 2pm (the official check in time), we were told by one staff to come back later for one of the rooms as it was not available. Yet, when this staff left (without telling us) and another staff took over, the previously "unavailable" room somehow became available and we could check in immediately. I wonder if they are looking at the same system! The entire check in process took quite a while before we were finally able to check in (I pity the guy behind us!).

The first staff who served us had a bad face on him throughout the check in process. He appeared annoyed when we reiterated our special requests (which we'd already indicated when we booked the rooms; obviously they didn't look at that).

When we entered our room, we discovered that it was a smoking room (again, we'd clearly stated that we wanted non-smoking rooms). Tired from the unpleasant check in experience and wanting to avoid another round, we decided to just open the windows to ventilate the room. The safe and tv remote control in our rooms were not working whereas the room phones in the other rooms we booked were unreliable. The tv sets were small with limited channels. There was no wifi in the rooms which is a rarity nowadays, especially in 4 star hotels. We tried their massage at level 4 which was not impressive.

Positives
We took their breakfast once and it was decent. Rooms were cleaned everyday so no complaints there.

The location was not too bad with enough coffee shops around the area. It's also near New World Park which has a few restaurants and cafes including Starbucks and Old Town Coffee and a hawker centre. It's not exactly near the heritage centre and shopping centres and would require at least a 15-20 mins walk.

The price is attractive for budget conscious travellers but I'd probably pay a bit more to stay somewhere newer and nearer to town.

Going for a cousin wedding at the hotel ballroom and while getting the room at check in counter, this is the most irritating encounter I ever get. I really cant understanding whether the housekeeping dept is doing their work properly?
Keep delaying the guest check in and trying to push the blame to guest for asking same floor room request. For a service line, this is the most terrible hotel encounter in Penang.

I am requesting the hotel management to look into this matter seriously.

With the growth of Penang and new hotels emerging,Royal Penang seems old and in dire need of a major refurbishment. The major complaint was the toilet, the stench of urine was strong and we had to close the toilet door when we occupied the room. The sauna was under repair, the gym had dinosaur age equipments,it was in a shabby state. The location was good, platy of shops and eating places within walkable distance. The air conditioning was poor and room windows very dirty.

Breakfast buffet was acceptable and basic. Will probably opt for a newer hotel to stay in next visit to Penang.
