“Colonial style hotel, very different experience”
Reviewed 6 January 2014

The hotel is as what the website shows, clean, cosy and well-maintained. We have a individual section of the property to ourselves during our stay. The only sad part is no bath tub for our suite. Breakfast was delicious with nice coffee. You can choose to have breakfast at any part of the hotel.
Location is not very ideal but this can be settled with taxi.
Kudos to the 2 staffs who were very helpful and tried their best to make our stay comfortable.

Room Tip: The hotel is within the residential area and its quite new so not all taxi drivers knew where the pl...

Thank you for your review. We are sorry you were unhappy that you had no bath in your suite. All six of our suites have showers and only one, the Clove Suite has the tiled bath. Our website has a description of each room and its facilities.
We would like to say here that we have been open to Guests since 2009 so most taxi drivers by now know where we are - though we know there will always be a few newer drivers who will not. We do give all our guests once they are with us a map to get their bearings and to be able to show drivers where we are.
With regard to location we feel we offer a good location. We are situated on the fringes of Georgetown in a quiet residential street with very little traffic. Offering peace and quiet away from the heat and bustle of town but near enough to walk to it or we can call taxis and its 10 minutes away. We do hope you enjoyed your stay both in Penang and here at Clove Hall.

Staying here is a delight. The location is perfect away from the frantic pace of Georgetown but close enough to be within easy reach. The rooms are beautifully done, reminiscent of a colonial era and the hosts are charming and helpful. Highly recommended

We have stayed here several times and still consider this our preferred place in Penang. It is comfortable, the rooms are spacious and interesting and the hosptality is welcoming and helpful. The house is quite centrally located in Georgetown, but not right in the heart of the noisy old town. It has a small garden and good-sized pool which are great for relaxing between eating, sightseing or shopping trips.

What a brilliant small hotel, Clove Hall is even better than the pictures on the website.
We had an excellent 3 night stay at the end of November for our wedding anniversary (thanks again for the bottle of wine).
Jo & Jim are superb hosts and are great at suggesting thinks to do and places to eat, the rest of the staff are equally knowledgeable about all things Penang.
The trip was soo good that we are seriously thinking of moving there.
Hope to see you all again soon.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent.

Our stay at Clove Hall was the perfect way to spend a few days in the historic Georgetown. It truly felt like we were experiencing a little piece of the eclectic history of the capital of Penang. We were totally looked after, but in a discrete and friendly manner by the wonderful staff. Raj was a gem, and made us feel as welcome as if it was our own home.
It is an easy 10-15 minute walk from Clove Hall to the main centre of Georgetown, however the staff are happy to help you to arrange taxis if you prefer, but we didn't think it necessary.
We stayed in the Ginger Suite, which is an annexe at the back of the main house and very well looked after. Beautifully clean, with lovely period features and furniture maintained.
The breakfast - 'The Scrambler' is delicious, huge and very naughty ... but you're on holiday, so who cares! Only note of caution is that Penang is a foodie heaven, so filling up at breakfast could impair your eating spree for the rest of the day!
We'd go back in an instant... in fact, we probably will soon!

I recently stayed for 5 nights in late November, 2013 at the wonderful Clove Hall…. a real oasis in close proximity to downtown Georgetown…. the delightful owners/managers Jo & Jim are great people and know their stuff…. you feel instantly warm & welcome …. being small & boutique you feel u are always being personally looked after…. the pool is fantastic and the rooms are so special…. each one individual and beautifully decorated and designed…. the 2 VERY special staff Erlyn & Raj are a credit to the place…. they make you feel so at ease and comfortable…

Breakfast is great… a high standard each day and I tried all the different selections.

I can't wait to have another visit to Penang & enjoy the tranquility of Clove Hall...

Room Tip: Let Jo & Jim select for you….. they are very intuitive….

If you are looking for a small and individual overnight stay in Georgetown, this is the place to be.
Being that small and individual you might not find the one or other amenity you will find in the big hotel chains. The priority in this historical, excellent maintained B&B with a nice garden is clearly on privacy in well equipped rooms with a very personal service. They will serve you the afternoon tea as the Gin in the evening on your terrace/veranda - a rather good basis to reflect on the day.
We definitely liked the special atmosphere here and it will be our first choice when we return.

Room Tip: If possible try to get the Clove Hall suite
