“good stay there”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

The location of the hotel is very convenient, with many nice restaurants near by. The small coffee shop near the restaurant is quite good as well. The room is quite small, and the water was leaking at the bathroom. Nevertheless, it is still worth staying there for a short trip considering the price and location.

The location of this place is great, it's on one of the main streets in Georgetown, close to street food, great restaurants and it's easy to find your way around.

The hotel room was fine, very white. But it had the amenities we needed for a few nights. Unfortunately, the sound insulation is very poor. We had a room very close to the foyer and the stairs that lead to the upstairs level and in the mornings we could hear people talking outside very loudly. It sounds like they were right outside the door when in fact they were further out in the foyer and the sound travelled. If you have a room on the ground floor I recommend asking for one away from the main entrance.

The 2 girls on reception on arrival and when we checked out provided a poor service. They didn't seem interested and actually seemed to be confused when we asked something.

Overall the stay was fine, but not amazing. I would recommend staying here for a short stay and overall it is quite a nice place.

After read tripadvisor review on this hotel, I decided to stay here. When we arrived at Penang Sg Nibong bus station, my friend picked us up and sent us to hotel. Hotel is located hiding behind the shops and not visible at the road side therefore not easy to find. Lucky my friend using Waze to guide us there. First impression of this hotel is so White! Everything is painted white. I would say it has maintained well to keep so clean after it's opening. We stayed in double queen bed room with attached bathroom. Small but doable for a night. Location is good, walking distance to major attractions in Georgetown. However room rate is rather expensive almost same as 3 stars hotel ie Cititel.

The 'heritage' part of the name of the hotel is a misnomer as there is nothing heritage about this hotel apart from being in the designated heritage zone...the inside of the hotel and the rooms are modern. The hotel is located centrally which is a plus. However the room that I was in had a dampness to it and you can tell from the walls of the room which were tainted with a bit of mould. The bathroom had those flying insects which come with a damp room...I would have killed at least 10 of them during my stay here. The staff was friendly enough however I had one of my biscuits missing from the room after a day out. So leave your valuables locked up! Bed was large, and comfortable and clean. But finding it hard to recommend this place.

We stayed in this hotel in Dec 2013, just before Christmas. I like the white and gold colour scheme in this hotel as it exudes grandeur. Though the access to the hotel is via a narrow driveway which makes this little gem less noticeable along Chulia Street, for us, this gives the hotel extra privacy and the set-back gives rise to a quieter surrounding amidst the hustle and bustle of Georgetown.

We were upgraded to a triple room and we were pleased with the size of the room. The attached bathroom is small. We have seen small bathrooms like Chulia Heritage's in London, however, the London hotels could still add a standing shower cubicle. I reckon it all boils down to space-planning. Frankly, it would have been nice if there was a shower cubicle as the entire bathroom floor is wet once after a shower. If you opt for a room with ensuite bathroom like ours, choose one that is along the secondary corridor, I believe it should be quieter than the ones fronting the reception area due to frequent human traffic.

Being city-dwellers back home, we love Chulia Heritage's proximity to almost everything, especially food. For hawker food, please do not miss Joo Hooi Coffee Shop@475 Jalan Penang (at the intersection of Jalan Penang and Keng Kwee Lane). More hawker food and dim sum available along Campbell Lane, Kimberley Street and Japan Street. For high-end Nyonya Food, you can perhaps take a meal at Seven Terraces restaurant along Stewart Lane. Its ambience was something that we love. For non-Penang food, for a change, you can try the authentic Italian food at Il Bacaro@Campbell House@106 Campbell Lane. The chefs are two Italian brothers. All of these are within walking-distance from Chulia Heritage.

Chulia Heritage is also in close proximity to the Blue Mansion, the Eastern & Oriental Hotel (E&O Hotel was once owned by the same family as Raffles Hotel, Singapore) and others. Chulia Heritage is near 1st Avenue Mall, Prangin Mall and Komtar for shopping and movie-watching pleasure.

Chulia Heritage offers free parking if you drive. If not, cabs and public buses are easily available. If taking cabs, please bargain, we were once charged RM50 for a so-called double trip on that same single cab and the entire distance of the so-called double trip took us only 20 mins. From Chulia Street to Queensbay Mall, cab drivers will ask for RM30 but may be can bargain it down to RM20; ours was RM30 one way and RM20 the other way. One compliment I must shower is on Penang's public transport, i.e., the buses. They are new, clean and air-conditioned. The interior is almost similar to that found on Singapore public buses, albeit the doorway leading onto the Penang buses is a little too narrow. Chulia Street, being at the heart of Georgetown, there are many buses that can take you to various parts of the island such as Gurney Drive, the Beach area, the foot of Penang Hill, Gurney Plaza, Penang Paragon, Queensbay Shopping Mall which is the biggest shopping centre in Penang etc. For those who are staying in Penang for a week, you can even buy a 7-day bus card for unlimited travel. You can buy the card at a small bus office at its bus terminus located next to a pier, a 15-20 min leisurely walk from Chulia Heritage.

Chulia Heritage, all in all, is a good place to stay, as long as you do not mind a small and wet bathroom. Its good points, undoubtedly outweigh the small imperfection.

This hotel was the letdown of my trip around Malaysia. To their credit the staff was very friendly and was accommodating as far as what they had to work with. The first issue was looking for a plug adapter. I had a typical American style 3-prong laptop and the man at the front desk sifted through many he had behind the counter opening all sorts of boxes but didn’t have one that matched. The odd part was that he commented that he had never seen this style plug before as he’s working a front desk and these are plugs many laptops sold in neighboring Thailand come with. Pretty much all US laptops come with the same plug too. This was however only a minor issue because we found one. We first stopped in the closest 7-ELEVEN and they didn’t have the one I needed, but the mini-mart next door had it.

The next issue was the WIFI was super spotty in our room. It did however work when taking the laptop to the lobby which was a short walk from room. He said perhaps because we were down the hall we can’t get enough signal and while booked now the next day we can change rooms. That went smooth and he even put a wired connection we could use as well as the wireless in our room. So I give the staff credit for being friendly and trying to help us.

As for the rest, there wasn’t too much positive about this hotel. The first room we got was very small. We had to rearrange the furniture just to get a little space in the room, and then moved it all back when changing rooms. We didn’t have that problem in the next room which was a bit better organized and a little larger.

The location for the hotel is good if wanting to go out and get food or to one of the many bars. However, it is not all that great of a neighborhood. At night on the road this is on we were approached by beggars. There were also some hookers roaming the streets and you just get the sense it is not the nicest location. It is also very difficult to find a taxi to flag down from this hotel. While it is the only place I stayed in Georgetown I suspect there are better option for the following reason. As we ventured out other places there were times we were walking not far from other hotels, and were able to much easier flag down a cab to bring us back here. As doing this I couldn’t help but wish we had ended up in one of those other hotels.

With no regards to pricing I rate this hotel poor. For budget travelers, those into bar scene, or needing to get food late nights, or wanting to be right in this exact area for a specific purpose then it is probably okay if the price is much cheaper than other options. For us I wished we had chosen a different hotel.
