Coffee Atelier is a small establishment with traditional like room-homes. They turned this heritage building into little cozy stays where the rooms are decorated in Chinese style deco so you get a taste of the old experience which are kept clean, with a cozy romantic bed and plenty of space to relax. The location is great, in the heart of Georgetown and walking distance to many local cafés and bars and the famous Nasi Kandar Beratur (must eat!)
You might find the daytime a little noisy from the bustle of people going about their daily work in the back alley. But then, that's when you should be up n out as well since there's so much to see and eat in Penang...why stay in?
You can tell the owner has a love of the local arts, many grace the walls and are for sale too.
Don't forget to take a peek at the gallery at the side of the hotel cafe. You will see an old coffee roasting bar in an open courtyard at the back. I loved the bit if coffee history behind it.

We recently stayed at this lovely Boutique Hotel for 4 nights. The Coffee Atelier is very well located in the center of the heritage area of Georgetown and the building itself is in a colonial style, carefully restored inside and out maintaining ist character.
Our very spacious bedroom was upstairs, beautifully and tastefully furnished and decorated with great Attention to details. The room had al the necessary amenities without destroying the charm of the old shop houses - this means that you do have aircon, fans, flatscreen sat tv, dvd, fridge, tea maker, hair dryer and wifi. The semi outdoor privat and spacious bathroom was amazing.
It's a warm friendly place and I could not recommend it more. The owner Stefan always took his time to explain and recommend things and the staff was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
The Gallery also has fab paintings on display and cafe 55 where meals are served was great.
Thank you for this very memorable experience - we will come back!

Perfect boutique hotel, built in the best location in Georgetown! Absolute must!

This old strait house has been perfectly restored by a european expat and turned into a charming boutique hotel and art gallery.

The rooms are very big, and maintain the design and decoration of the colonial era, having separate parts of the house turned into private suits was a great idea, and you feel that you have your own space.

The location is absolutely perfect, in the traditional neighbourhood, surrounded with some of the best hotels, restaurants and attractions.

The best place if you want to discover by feet this awesome world heritage city!

My partner and chose the Coffee Atelier based on recommendations on Trip Advisor and other travel sites as well as price and location. We were not disappointed. From my first email to the owner Stefan through to our departure after 2 nights, the service we experienced was fantastic. We had booked 3 nights but unfortunately due to a late flight out of Jakata (damn Garuda) we missed our connection. No matter, we notified Stefan and he rearranged our taxi for us. We arrived from KL early in the morning and it was great to have breakfast waiting for us.

The converted shops which are the accommodation are just beautiful. Stefan needs congratulations. No over-the-top renovations - just tasteful freshening up and decoration. In our downstairs room (#47), the floors were original concrete and tiles which had been polished and sealed. They looked great! The entry hall was decorated with antique (maybe just old?) beautiful Chinese furniture. There was a sitting area once inside our secure locked door which led to our bedroom with a lovely comfortable 4-poster queen sized bed. There was a TV in the bedroom and free wi-fi along with power points, bedside tables with lights on both, mosquito net, air conditioner and ceiling fan.

Next to the bed room is an indoor courtyard with a ceiling fan, chairs and table and small fridge with water and Carlsberg! Great coffee was always available too. The toilet and shower were located off this room and the hand basin and mirror against a wall. We didn't use this area apart from the bathroom and toilet as it was just too hot at this time of the year, even with the ceiling fan on high.

Cafe 55 where meals are served was great. The manager, Rubi and her staff are lovely and we thank them for the great service they gave us. Rubi took us on a tour through the original coffee roasting area and art gallery and is a great hostess. Our breakfasts were tasty and filling and coffee the best I've had in years of travelling SE Asia!

The Coffee Atelier's location in historic UNESCO World Heritage Georgetown is perfect. All of the major attractions are within walking distance. The Clan Jetty's, street art, temples, restaurants, shops and historic buildings are fantastic. Make sure you have good shoes, as there is so much to see. Our 2 days weren't enough.
We loved our stay here and and have no hesitation in returning and recommending The Coffee Atelier to our family, friends and the Trip Advisor community.

Coffee Atelier was a very special hotel from its decoration as well as its location in the UNESCO area. Stefen, the owner was very kind; for the staff, I can only say they were the most knowledgeable and considerate hotel staff I have ever met. Thank you all! My parents and I have spent two very wonderful days in Georgetown!!

If any worry, however, was that some insects and mosquitos were flying when I was asleep. The mosquito-repellent incense sometimes was not working.

For the breakfast some travellers have mentioned in previous reviews, I may say that it was very good continent-style breakfast. I love the muesli with swiss-yoghurt!! If you are looking for more local breakfast, just walk about ten minutes, you will find some local markets and there are all around local breakfast houses. Just be an early bird :)

Room Tip: for families, I highly recommend to choose the suites.

We were greeted warmly and offered a drink despite our out of hours arrival and this set the tone for the rest of our stay. Coffee Atelier is a perfect example of an unusual hotel due to the rooms being converted, traditional Georgetown shop houses. We stayed in a ground floor double suite with original features which is perfect for those who like to experience cultural surroundings. The staff were really helpful and friendly with excellent knowledge and suggestions for exploring the heart of Georgetown. A thoroughly enjoyable stay. We will definitely go back!
