“Nice and cosy hotel”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

We got a very nice room on the top floor of this little hotel (only 2 rooms). Perfect welcome by the owner who explained us everything about the city and the restaurants to visit. He reserverd a parking space just in front of the hotel. Room is spacious and very cosy. Location of the hotel is good. Many restaurants and main tourist attractions from China Town are footsteps away. Only negative point is that the hotel does not serve breakfast and we had to walk around to find a European breakfast place.

Staying at this beautifully restored heritage shophouse made our visit to Penang so much more special and memorable. Tee, the manager was very helpful, often going beyond what is expected, especially helping us with our elderly parents. He knows Penang really well, especially where the best hawker food can be found. Our day tour of the island with Tee turned into a food safari! We stayed 4 nights in the Peony Suite. The only negative we found was that the bathroom is accessed through the communal area but as we were the only people there for three of the four nights, it was not a big issue. The big jar of tiny iced biscuits brought back fond childhood memories ( we called them 'belly button' biscuits when we were children) and we almost depleted the whole jar. We loved the fact that the set up and that there are only 2 suites making the place feel more like a home. The house is in a great location within walking distance to most of the local attractions and the row of money changers. Staying in this authentically restored house made us feel as if we part of a bye gone era of Penang but with all the modern conveniences of the 21st century.

Stayed for 1 night but wish I had stayed for another night in this beautifully restored Peranakan style hotel. We stayed in the Attic room which was roomy for 2, spaciously laid out with a queen size bed, living area, shower room, toilet and a high ceiling.

While the owners do not stay there, it was nice to have the place to ourselves with shops just a step outside. The building definitely looks authentic, with modern amenities to bring comfort to one's stay yet allowing the history and features to shine through.

No breakfast included, with wifi.

Definitely an enjoyable stay and hope to return again.

What a gem indeed! Everything about this place is special. Tee made us feel very welcome on arrival and the house is well set up with annotated maps of good local eateries, water and a fridge so we could buy supplies and make our own breakfasts. especially enjoyed the huge jar of iced gems that we managed to demolish. While we were here we were he only guests so really felt like the whole house was ours, amazing! The decor is beautiful, great air on, comfy bed (2 pillows now!) hair dryer, tea and kettle in the room as well as thick towels and sandlots for indoors. A really great set up with lovely attention for detail. We had the Peony room with stunning high ceilings and a second mezzanine bedroom which would have been great if we had kids or an argument! We didnt hear the mosque from this side either. The bathroom isn't en suite but it wasnt a problem as we're alone, and can't imagine guests from upstairs would use that area that much. There were also bikes to hire and antiques downstairs for sale. A fantastic find and such a treat not to be a large anonymous hotel.

This is a real gem, a lovingly restored shophouse, located in a quiet street amongst galleries and close to cafes and local shops where bottled water, beer, snacks etc were easily available. We stayed in the Phoenix suite and were delighted with the antique furniture, the classic timber shutters and general decor. The queen sized bed was very comfortable and we had our own private sitting area with cable TV, plus shared use of the larger sitting area with fridge on the floor below us. The free wifi worked well too. The manager, who also met us at the airport, was very friendly and helpful and available by phone at any time - not that we needed him, as we had no problems.

It was a short walk to Little India for delicious curries and tasty morsels from the tandoor, and about a 15-20 minute walk to some fabulous dim sum restaurants and night markets. The hop-on, hop-off bus and plentiful trishaws make it easy to get around Georgetown if you don't like walking in the heat.

The only negative was the proximity to the mosque, as the early morning prayer chants are broadcast over a PA system, and the rear window and small balcony of our suite faced directly towards the mosque tower. Tee, the manager, warned us of this and helpfully provided earplugs to ensure a good night's sleep.

Overall, it was a very pleasant stay and we much prefer this type of accommodation to large, generic hotel chains with no character.

Room Tip: The Peony Suite would not be my choice, as the bathroom facilities are accessed through the shared s...

Firstly, the quiet location at Lebuh Armenian was lovely. It was tranquil with minimal traffic. It is also conveniently located in Georgetown, close to good food at Lebuh Chulia and Chowrasta market. Very easy walking distance once you get the hang of the roads.

The Phoniex Room where we stayed was nice. Old and yet new. It was very clean and airconditioned. It took a while for the airconditioning to turn the rooms cold because of the high ceilings. The bed was excellent and you were really left alone (except when they cleaned up the room). So you felt like it was your house. Located on the third floor, you also had access to use the water dispenser and fridge on the 2nd floor with the common living area. They even provided some local biscuits for you to help yourself. We felt that we took the better room as the other room did have to share the living room with other guests while you had your own thing going on in the Phoniex Room.

Only complaint was the lack of additional pillows. My wife and I had to buy 2 more since we had difficulty sleeping without the extras. We left them at the hotel (hope they leave it for other guests to use) after we left. The toilet developed a little fault in the flushing system on our last day there (water could not stop flowing). Nothing major though.

Overall, a very peaceful place. Good for couples.

Room Tip: Pick the Phoneix Room for more privacy but be prepared to climb one more level.

Guesthouse located in beautifully restored shophouse. The interior has been lovingly restored and just walking around the building is a treat.

We had a large room (Peony Suite) with all mod cons. The one downside with our room, which may not apply to others, was that the bathroom was not en-suite. It was accessed through a common area and although the bathroom was not shared, it meant having to get dressed in the night if we needed to use the loo.

No breakfast provided but try one of the local coffee shops for a spicy local breakfast!!
