This hotel is in such a great location, the shops are right at your door.
We paid the upgrade to be able to access the business floor which was wonderful as that provides some nibbles and drinks with a nice view of the city.
The rooms whilst a little dates are large and clean. Nice pool too so you can relax after a hard day shopping

This hotel always delivers. It was our second stay and it was every bit as good as the first. The rooms may be dated but they are clean, functional and value for money! The service is what you would expect from all Shangri la properties... amazing. After Traders we stayed at the Shangri La Rasa Sayang and then onto the Rasa Ria Kota Kinabalu and the service at the Traders was every bit as good as their sister hotels. The resorts at Batu Ferringgi are probably better suited if you are after a beach/pool holiday where you are spending a lot of time at the hotel property but Traders is perfect if you come to Georgetown for eating, shopping and sight seeing. The buffet breakfast is excellent and the staff are some of the most friendliest I have encountered in my travels. I will be back again.

Room Tip: Club rooms are worth the extra.

Always a shame to be disappointed in a hotel. Let's start with the positives. The staff are lovely, super efficient and really helpful. The location is good and the girls loved the well kept pool and the gym looked good NB, it "looked" good. We enjoyed the very extensive buffet breakfast which catered for all. And while the room was as we requested, joining and with a fifth bed, it was very tired. There is nothing more off putting than a mould blackened plastic shower mat, and it's so easily fixed. While the bedding was clean the carpet was really not good and the smell old and musty. The hotel is in need of an update. Even the TV was a very old 4:3 CRT. So traders here's the thing. This hotel has great staff and clearly aspirations to be really good. But if the rooms are unloved it makes us the guests feel unloved. Especially when the cure seems so simple. We all felt cheated by a really substandard room.

The hotel is very nostalgic, because it hasn't been renovated in many years. It's looking a bit tired, but the rooms are decent and the location is excellent. It's is next to a mall and supermarket, and has easy access to the rest of Georgetown.

We travelled with friends, so having club rooms we were able to meet at the club lounge and have our drinks, snacks, etc. Several other guests who have left their reviews seem to be quite impressed by the club lounge, but I feel that it is quite basic, although it is decent.

The location of this place is in Georgetown (Magazine Road). I would, first of all, like to comment that their concierge is most helpful and wonderfully warm. They were all most attentive and responded to all our requests with utmost graciousness. In terms of facilities, the hotel is quite up to the standard. Smoking and non smoking floors are separated. There are a fitness centre and swimming pool on the fourth floor. Morning breakfast was satisfactory too. Complimentary wi-fi (at least on my floor) was steady and demonstrated good performance. It was fairly quiet on the level I was staying and I had a good, refreshing sleep. This hotel has been around for a while, I am told, but everything is well maintained and works on demand.

I liked that they do not provide newspapers outside the doors throughout the whole hotel. Rather they have an indication on the washroom mirror on their downloadable app for a press reader. I thought that was a nice extra effort.

Second time at Traders Penang. Key consideration is the location - smacked in the middle of town. Booked the club room for 3 nights. Check in was a breeze at the ground level.

Overall service was good but not exceptional. Staff including the cleaning team were polite and pleasant. The club lounge located at the club level - 16 and 17 - had decent views of Penang Bridge. It could get crowded during breakfast and cocktail hours between 6 to 8pm, so do be prepared to squeeze. At other times, it is a quiet place to chill with snacks available almost throughout the day. Drinks were available at all times.

Room decor is dated, however the room was clean and no major complaints. There was a nice LED TV in the room (different from the CRT TV from my previous stay). Channels were limited though. Bed was huge but could have done better with the pillows (too soft - so we requested for a change). You could see that they need a revamp soon with a really "old school" toilet sink and bathtub. It could get quite slippery coming out of the tub and the shower curtains was grimey (FYI, there is no standing shower). Amenities in the toilet were great though!

Do check out the gym which is well equipped and oh, the Wifi speed is fast too. There are good street food all around the hotel so you may wish to have a light breakfast in the hotel and head out for more.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay and the differentiating factor versus the rest of the hotels on Penang Island is the lounge and location.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor facing the front of the hotel where the view is nicer. Club room is a must.

It is slightly old but everything works - rooms are clean, staff helpful and reasonably priced. It is well placed with Komtar/ shopping malls next door and street food just a walk down the road. All in, a comfy stay.
