“One of the best hotels I have stayed in!”

I normally always find fault with hotels however I cannot find any problems with Eastern and oriental. Staff are great, rooms are beautifully decorated and large and it is in the unesco heritage area. Amazing amazing! Penang's Raffles!

First thing's first - if you don't like this hotel you have no soul. We visited for the first time 4 years ago and loved it then as well. It's probably the only hotel I've been to in the world where walking across the lobby or along the corridors of the heritage wing (or even relaxing in our lovely, old-style suite) seems to sweep you back in time without feeling cheesy or Disneyfied. Perhaps it's the pervading sense of quiet or the ever-so-slightly worn furnishings, perhaps it's the eccentricities like the full shoe kit in the mens' toilets. Whatever, it works. And big compliments too to the new wing - quite extraordinary to build a huge new building so sympathetic in style and ambience to the rest of the hotel - the public areas are lovely and the new infinity swimming pool is gorgeous.

Negatives? Mainly service orientated. Service in the bars and restaurants can be very, very slow. We ate lunch in the restaurant in the new wing and our food took 50 minutes to arrive. There was only one other table occupied so not good at all. Secondly the World Cup is advertised all over the hotel bar where there are World Cup wallcharts etc. So when I wandered down at midnight to watch one of the games I was a bit surprised to be told that I couldn't get a drink and the bar would be closed shortly. What on earth is the point of advertising the World Cup and then refusing to allow resident guests to watch it? Finally the concierge was very poor. I asked about good Indian restaurants and got a very half-hearted response. I also asked about a restaurant five27 which they had never heard of - can't think why, it was great and is well reviewed on tripadvisor. Only other slight negative is the swimming pool in the old wing. It's lovely but the surrounding tiling and paved areas near the garden are a bit shabby and dirty, would take very little to do a bit of extra landscaping.

Overall a lovely treat of a hotel where you can pretend you're living a hundred years ago.

Room Tip: Suites in the heritage wing are spacious and charming.

Everything about this hotel was great. The pools, the rooms, Planters Lounge, the Heritage Wing - it was all wonderful. The ambience is as though you have stepped back into a more civilised past.

We stayed here for 5 days and can't speak highly enough. We spent most of our time in the Victory Annexe where our room was located. The rooms are amazing - particularly the bathrooms, they are total luxury. Dean together with Roy and the staff at the Planters Lounge made cocktail hour a must. They made us feel at home and looked after us like family. The terrace pool was fantastic. Complete with an infinity pool it is a relaxation heaven. Afternoon tea at 1885 was delightful. I could go on forever, but suggest you stay at this wonderful retreat from the world. Will definitely stay here again.

There comes a time in a hotel's life where history, atmosphere and charm cannot make up for a very low standard of service. The level of English among the employees is appallingly bad and the attitude to service is "no can do".

The old world charm of this Sarkies Brother's hotel just wont cover the cracks. s
Here are some glaring examples of what transpired during my time at the E&O

A visit to the business center offers a distinct possibility of getting Dengue fever. The room is rife with mosquitoes and to add insult to injury the old and outdated computers and printers never work This was the same in the Straits Club, a NON WORKING PRINTER..A simple order of a wonton noodle soup in the bar for lunch turns into a nightmare. The soup has to come from a kitchen which seems kilometers away and when the soup finally arrived ( about 45 mins) it was cold and very spicy. Sent back to be changed took another 30 minutes.

In Sarkies corner the signature restaurant waiters simply do not understand simple orders such as "no ice" in drinks and most times the drinks need to be exchanged, a real waste.

The shuttle bus drivers ( especially the Indian one) are generally rude and ungracious.

If one never leaves the room or the pool area, the hotel is perfect-otherwise stay away!

Room Tip: In the heritage wing top floor sea views

We stayed 2 nights at the Heritage Wing annex. Indeed, everything was vintage including the shower head! The rooms are big and comfortable.

As we travelled with an elderly on wheelchair and a 1 year old baby, we appreciate the helpful staff at the driveway and at the cafe. We asked for direction for a Nyonya restaurant and the staff were good at providing direction and even gave us a map.

When we return to Penang the next time, we'll try the new annex wing instead of the Heritage wing.

My husband and I stayed 5 nights in the Heritage Wing of the hotel in room 111. We loved it very much and are so pleased we chose to stay there.

The room was so comfortable and homey! We enjoyed coming back to it after a hot day touring George Town. We had the best sleeps during our stay there and really appreciated the style of it!

All the staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful! They helped us book restaurants, the taxi to the airport, printing out our flight tickets. They looked after us very very well! THANK YOU!

We had a romantic dinner at 1885 and it is definitely a must try experience. The food was out of this world and worth every penny. We had the six course meal and loved it very much. The service there is top notch and the ambiance with the pianist added a beautiful touch to everything.

The swimming pool is very beautiful and we swam in it everyday during our stay.

Out of 10 this hotel was definitely more than a 10 for us!!! Thank you to everyone at Easter & Oriental for making our visit to Penang memorable!

It is a beautiful hotel and you are all doing a great job! Keep it up!!!!!!

Room Tip: Choose room 111 as it is private and has a few of the sea.

I really didn't like Georgetown, but it didn't matter as we didn't want to leave the hotel. Its quite an experience staying in such a historic property. The rooms were big, with lovely views and we couldn't get enough of the pool.
