“Wonderful luxury hotel”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

We spent 4 nights in the Studio Annexe of the E&O and it was wonderful. Our room was spacious, with an amazing bathroom and fantastically comfortable bed. We had a view of the ocean, as do all the rooms. The breakfast was fantastic, from the fresh juices to the wok stir fry noodle dishes. The pool was great. I loved every minute of my stay here. So quiet and comfortable.

Room Tip: They all have sea views, so I don't think there would be a special room.

We were staying across the street and visited the hotel just to check it out. Friendly staff welcomed us and we ended up having breakfast at the place every morning. In the main entrance you have a very nice echo sound when you walk the room. Just to make you feel special..

Location, location, and in the E&O's case, history. Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham and Noel Coward are some of the guests who have stayed at this hotel that opened in 1885 and unlike its peers in Singapore and Bangkok, saw a dip in its fortunes as those cities powered ahead of Penang in recent decades. Georgetown's eclipse meant that it hasn't undergone the wholesale reimagining of the Asian economic boom years, maintaining its streets of living history that have made it a UNESCO world heritage site. While there are many wonderful new boutique hotels in Penang's capital, the E&O, now more than adequately spruced up, is definitely an excellent base to explore the city. The three-story heritage wing has rooms with the sound of the waves, all mod-cons and staff, who like most of the people you meet in the city, are proud to welcome you to their renaissance.

We returned to The E&O Hotel for the 3rd time. Never get tired of this oasis. The staff had changed some what but some of the old faces were a welcoming sight. Emma from Farquars Bar is just as lovely as ever. Shafiq the new bar person was a joy. We had many great nights in there. Wednesday nights is the magnificent seafood buffet. This was most enjoyable and very fresh.
Abdullah the chef in Sarkies makes the very best roti canai you will ever taste. Izzy was also in Sarkies she has moved from Planters Lounge and it was wonderful catching up with her again. A few old friendly faces to meet with and a few new friendly faces for our next visit.
Spending the mornings seeing the sights and shopping to relaxing by the infinity pool in the afternoon was a must as the mind needs to unwind. Then it's showering in the hotel rooms splendidly large shower, dressing and heading down to the 6th floor for the Planter Bars free drinks and nibbles.Alias, Dean and Fazil, made us feel so very welcome each night of our 11 day stay. The waiters kept bringing out fresh hot food and cheeses which were indeed very tempting.
The room itself is comfortable. We did not find the bed too firm but the pillows need more stuffing added to them. The mini bar has cold bottled water and a range of canned soft drinks which are complimentary, yet another nice added touch.
All said and done The Eastern and Oriental is a superb hotel and meets all requirements for a refreshing and relaxing holiday.
The hotel manager Mr Harold Rainfoy has done a really fantastic job for helping The Eastern and Oriental Hotel being the very best in Georgetown if not indeed Penang.
Thank You ALL for our wonderful time in Penang.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet sea facing high floor away from the lifts.

This was our second visit to the E&O, this time we stayed in the new annex. Impressively the new wing mirrors the style of the heritage hotel, they have kept the feel and ambience of the the old hotel, this excellent. In the annex you have access to the Planter lounge which provides drinks and canapés each evening and all day tea and coffee, this is great value. the lounge is located on the 6th floor alongside the infinity swimming pool, a refreshing place after a morning exploring Georgetown.
My only complaint is that the beds are too hard, this seems to be a common issue throughout Asia ( the reason for only 4 stars not 5) the staff and very friendly and helpful. The Georgetown location is second to none within easy walking distance the historic Penang.

My third stay in this hotel was to celebrate my second wedding anniversary and also my birthday (both dates were one week apart). We chose this hotel because I'd absolutely loved my first two experiences, and wanted some luxury and pampering on this trip.

Being my third time here, the novelty had sort of worn off for me, but it was my husband's first stay so he was definitely more impressed than I was on this trip. We booked the Victory Annexe studio room which came with the daily tea-time refreshments at the Planter's Lounge on level 6 which we totally loved. The spread was simple but of good quality and enough to keep our bellies full till dinner later. It was a really good small meal to have in between lunch and dinner.

We also had a nice swim in the lovely pool on the same floor. I liked that they had some lounge chairs and parts of the pool underneath a shade - useful for hot mid-day weather and sunshine.

Everything else about the hotel was like I said before. Great service, great decor, great furnishings, plush bedding, awesome bathroom, lovely sea-view and I loved the nice breeze that comes through the room when you open the balcony sliding doors and switch off the aircon. One gripe I had about this visit was, however, was that the hotel had mentioned they will send me a cake and decorate the room with flowers in lieu of my wedding anniversary, but both were never done. I feel it's better that they don't say anything at all rather than say they will do something but then don't do it.

Room Tip: High floor, full sea view at the Victory Annexe

Stayed at Victory Annex wing for 2 nights for holiday, and feel refreshed afterward.

The room is nice, it has everything you need from free minibar to a coffee machine, nice tub and great shower, the bay view from the full glass window and the balcony complete it.

The breakfast has wide variety, I like the fresh juice counter and they provide a good coffee and selection of Penang food (char kwetiaw, hor fun, etc). Make sure you try it.
The breakfast area has indoor and outdoor setting, I prefer to sit outside overlooking the sea and the jetty. It's relaxing!

The infinity pool at Victory Annex is nice, it's not that big but just nice to jump in and enjoy the view. Or if you don't feel like swimming you can just sit back and relax, listening to the wave sound and waiting for sunset, and they also serve free cocktail and some finger food from 6-7pm at Planters lounge next to the pool.

There are many things that I liked about this hotel, even the photographs that hung by the hotel corridor is also another nice treat to your eye, feel sad to leave and will definitely coming back.
