“Why can’t all hotels be like Macalister Mansion?”
Reviewed 16 January 2014

Forget about big name hotels, this is the place to stay if you want to feel special.
There are eight rooms in the hotel. I stayed in room 5 for three nights. It is a twin bed room, with a comfortable sitting area, 2 large LCD TVs, a bathroom with shower and bath tub, and a separate toilet.
[Good] Quality amenities: made in the U.S. and generous sized shampoo / conditioning / soap / bubble bath. Fluffy robes and slippers, quality bedding, towels, stereo system.
Sounds pretty standard so far? It gets better.
[Better] Complimentary minibar: fully stocked with Italian Sanpellegrino branded soft drinks, mineral water, spring water, Nespresso machine and capsules, TWG tea, and branded snacks (chips, cookies, peanuts, m&m, muesli bars etc). As well as 4 bottles of spring water daily.
Customised stationery, you’ll have to open the stationery box to see for yourself, it’s a subtle yet thoughtful touch.
[Best] The breakfast is not the usual buffet affair, it is made to order and the guest can choose a main, a coffee / tea, and a juice for breakfast in the morning, served in the Living Room. The presentation, the texture, and the taste of the mains were exceptional. Service at breakfast was top notch and the ambience of the Living Room was chic, airy and very comfortable.
With the turn down service each night, treat sized cakes would be put on the table along with a sweet dream good night note.
I hired a Hertz rental car from downtown which I casually parked in Macalister’s car park one morning. I took it out for a drive that afternoon. Upon returning to hotel in the evening, I noticed the car park was completely full but there was a reserved parking spot with my rental car’s rego number printed on it, right in front of the foyer. I was surprised by the level of keen observation and thoughtfulness that Macalister’s staff demonstrate. It was the smallest detail that sets them apart from the rest of the field.
Can I find any flaw? If I must, maybe the fact that there was no milk or milk frother to go with the Nespresso machine in the room. But the restaurant staff makes a beautiful coffee to order for me so there is nothing to nag about really. I’m certain that if you ask for milk, they would deliver it fresh to you in the room.
This is the first time that I stayed at one of the “design hotels”. Apparently more than 400 hotels apply for this membership every year and on average only 5% of applicants is accepted. The experience in Macalister Mansion will make you want to check out other Design Hotels in the world. It is the combination of their top notch service, attention to detail, exceptional food and beverage, and the upmost comfort that makes staying at Macalister Mansion a truly unforgettable experience. Not to mention the amazing design of the hotel that many reviewers also praised.

Room Tip: There is no bad room here, pick one that suits your personal taste.

If you love design and good architecture, do not miss this beautiful hotel. The attention to details, in every aspect, is extraordinary – this hotel was renovated with great care, with an eye to international trends in minimalist, clean, design and yet incorporating subtly many elements of Georgetown's street art. Rooms are airy and spacious, with all comforts you'd require and more; the bathroom is a blast, with a huge bathtub and top quality amenities, towels, sheets, bathrobes (2 sets!), all extra. Did I forget the complimentary tea, coffee, snacks, newspapers, wi-fi?

The biggest selling point of this place may be its prettiness, but, for once, it is not style over substance, as the Macalister delivered consistent top quality service: everything was done quickly and well, including a last minute change of room for our friends, who preferred a different room than the one they booked, and the elaboration of a super detailed itinerary for our trips to the hills and the city centre, including excellent recommendations for cool bars, shops and restaurants in town. Food is great too, so if you really decide to stay somewhere else, come at least for a drink or dinner – you will get a sense of what you missed ;)

Room Tip: We book the suite (room nr 4), which is great, but we saw at least other two room and I have to say...

Stayed at the magnificent Macalister Mansion for a couple of nights in December. Excellent micro boutique hotel with only eight rooms at the edge of old town area. The façade of this 100 year old (was told) heritage building is simply breathtaking and lovely restored. I don’t think any other hotels in town come close to the look of this beauty.

The room is wonderfully equipped especially with all the detail touches that have been put in. The interior is a striking contrast to the external heritage look. I thought it is an excellent blend of heritage and contemporary, especially the modern comfort of a hotel room and most importantly, the bed.

And don’t miss the excellent breakfast served at the café, The Living Room. Small menu with western and local flavours. Some tasty breads and pastries too.

The experience of staying here is like staying in your friend’s ultra luxurious mansion and not the typical 5 star mega hotel. And most importantly, no less luxurious than any of the international 5 star hotel.

Definitely worth a visit!

Room Tip: Each has its unique design & art piece. Check online to choose! Room 7 is my favorite.

We are thrilled by your kind compliments and thank you. The owners put in a lot of love and effort to make Macalister Mansion the way it is today as they have a lot of passion for Heritage sites. We are glad that it left a good impression.

love the design of the mansion! we approached the crew at the main service counter right in front of the main door of the mansion and asked if there is any area that is good for drinks. we were showed the living room and the den immediately. we decided to have tea at the living room. at first we wanted to settle at the outdoor seating area as it was pretty cold inside the living room. however the seats are all wet as it just rained. the nice staff suggest that we can seat at the table near the back door and he can get it open for us so that it will not be so cold around our table. good service! will definitely come back again if i visit penang!

I have never been to a place as amazing as this before. Every detail has been considered here and the level of attention is fantastic. The place itself has been lovingly restored and the design is mind-blowing. The boutique approach (you even have drawers stocked with personalised writing paper for your convenience) will leave you feeling very ambivalent about staying in a larger hotel again. It feels like a home - but an amazingly well-designed home. Deserves every accolade it's currently bringing in. Bravo!

Had my lunch with friends at the living room but I chose the meal from the breakfast list, and I had the Poached Duck Egg. I really like the creamy egg white and the way the yolk ran in my mouth =P

The interior layout is amazing as well. In order to get to the Living Room, we must pass by The Cellar. It is a space to lounge, relax with a glass of fine wine or champagne. It stocks over 300 labels of wines from all over the world, possibly the largest collection in Penang. The Cellar serves up to 20 different labels sold by the glass, this is the perfect place to enjoy a pre-dinner drink or a nightcap.

Then it comes to the Living Room, encompassing all day dining and casual space to hang out, it offers a delectable selection of local cuisine and international flavours. Set within a playful and colourful theme, guests can also enjoy pastries with a wide selection of beverages.

And on the outside, it is The Lawn which offers the perfect space to relax or lounge by the pool. Really amazing place, certainly recommended!

I just stayed here for 4D3N in rooms 4 & 5 (joint rooms) and it was a great experience. The service was excellent and the rooms were superb. I especially enjoyed the shower which is a rain shower head.

Room 4 came with a spiral staircase up to the mansion's tower where there was a seat and table for guests to relax and read.

One thing to note, is that if you're looking for a heritage house, this may not be the right choice. Although the exterior is maintained, the indoors of the mansion are completely renovated with modern comforts. However, if you're looking for a comfortable stay in a 5 star boutique hotel, this is the place to be.
