“Lovely Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2014

I stayed at the Seven Terraces for 5 nights. This beautiful hotel is located in a restored Chinese shop house at the center of Georgetown. All major sights are in walking distance.

On the ground floor, located around a spatious patio, is the reception area, breakfast room and a lounge and pool area where tea is served at 4 pm. The big and comfy rooms are located around the patio on the first floor and actually expand over two storeys, with the sleeping area on the lower level. The large bathrooms are very bright and equipped with a waterfall shower.

The rooms and all other areas are perfectly clean. Breakfast is a la carte with a choice of Malaysian and European dishes. Coffee/Tea, orange juice and a plate of fresh fruit is always included. Ewan, the manager, and his staff are absolutely friendly and helpful and will happily answer all your questions about getting around in Georgetown.

Unfortunately, we didn't have the chance to go to the restaurant, which serves sophisticated Baba Nyonya cuisine. I would love to come back once to make up for that!

I can’t say enough about how much we loved this hotel. We’ve been traveling for more than nine months now, and this is one of the best two or three hotels we’ve stayed in over that time. We stayed for four nights and here are some of the highlights.

The rooms are wonderful. Huge spaces, beautiful wooden furniture, great bathrooms and showers, really delightful. The public spaces were also pretty amazing. Rarely do I want to hang out in the public spaces but they were so nicely done – lots of comfy couches and chairs, great breezes and fans. The afternoon tea was a nice touch.

The service really stands out; Ewan the General Manager has an amazing team and he has done a remarkable job at training the staff. Any time you sat down in the lounge/pool area someone was there in seconds bringing cold water and making sure the right fans were turned on. The front desk was remarkably effective in helping us figure out what we wanted to do and then in making arrangements for us.

Food was also a highlight for us. Breakfasts were great and served promptly; when we had an early boat departure on the day of checkout they arranged to have our breakfast a bit early. And the main restaurant is one of the best we’ve encountered in months – we ate there twice and loved it both nights.

Add to that a great location right in the middle of George Town and it’s just about perfect. The only mild complaint was with Internet access. The system is not password-protected which makes access very simple, of course. On the other hand it may also leave their system subject to neighbors using it, and we found the service often dog slow. It would be worth trying a protected system to see if that makes it more available to hotel guests. With that small point aside, we loved Seven Terraces. Well done and thanks for a great four days!

Our 3-night stay at Seven Terraces as part of our SE Asia Honeymoon was exceptional in many ways. The setting is beautiful to say the least. We stayed in the Stewart suite - comprised of two levels, an enormous bathroom with huge waterfall shower and extra comfy pillows. We relaxed many times in the pool area and enjoyed Podi's (barman) welcoming smile and extra special cocktails. They were better than back home and that's a big call given we're from Melbourne...and I'm always up for a cocktail. Try the pork rolls off the bar menu too - amazing! Ewan, the GM was a delight and very generous - providing us with sight seeing advice, mosquito repellant, a lovely bottle of red wine and a honeymoon gift...what a champ! The antiques filling the reception space are exquisite and all the staff are a delight...they dish out some great hawker style food finding advice. We would recommend Seven Terraces to our family and friends without any hesitation.

We stayed in Seven Terraces in December, so apologies for a delayed review. The positive comments in previous reviews are all true which is why we could only book a few days at the Terrace due to its popularity. This boutique hotel lives up to the Ong-Steinberg brand: elegant without being fussy, welcoming and personal without being cloying, comfortable, sensational food and something that is just a little different to what else is out there. Its location puts it smack in the middle of things, as we found one night when we turned down a dim lane to discover a chinese opera being performed in the street. Magical! Think we'd go and stay anywhere Ewan managed and can't wait to see what he, Ong and Steinberg dream up next.
Tip: If you have more than a few days in Penang, consider starting your holiday at Seven Terraces to get that real Penang vibe and finish with some relaxing time at the gorgeous Clove Hall, owned by Jim and Jo, for something different.

Room Tip: We had the smaller room without the loft and really liked it. The bathroom absorbed any noise from t...

This is one of the most welcoming places I have ever stayed in. My wife and I booked one of the Argus suites, a duplex apartment, which was a delight. The staff from General Manager Ewan to cleaners and Barman Podi were all so helpful and polite you could not wish for a better team. Well done Ewan on creating the great atmosphere and Podi for his delicious Old Fashion cocktails. We will undoubtedly be back.

The hotel is an exceptionally restored set of seven 19th-century terraces. The owners’ retrofit succeeded where many other heritage restorations have failed - this is perfect example of balance between colonial elegance, traditional styling and modern comfort.

The service at the hotel was refreshingly personable. The attention to detail – like complimentary drinks in your fridge and tea and treats by the pool at 4pm everyday – really makes this place special. Ewan and his staff will go out of their way to make your stay memorable; well they did for us!

The staff are keen to share their knowledge about the local area over breakfast. In fact, the hotel’s map includes all the local sights and, most importantly for the foodies amongst us, the cheap restaurants in the area. For a very cheap Indian meal in the thick of Little India (well under $15RM per person) check out restaurant No.19 on the hotel’s map, Sri Ananda Bahwan. Here the 'cheapest and best' Indian curries and roti are served up on banana leaves. The best in Penang for sure!

But when you’ve had your fix of cheap rough-and-ready street-side eateries you have to try the Seven Terraces restaurant. The food is exceptional and the setting is pleasantly formal. Ignore the comments by other reviewers about the set menu price – seriously, if you want a cheap meal in Penang there is a good cheap restaurant on every corner.

Eating at the Seven Terraces restaurant is a different culinary experience and a necessity for any stay. It is well worth the price (US$30) for a four-course modern twist on traditional Malaysian dishes in this beautiful hotel. They cater for vegetarians and carnivores and we couldn’t finish all the food we were served. Lucky we had a nice Aussie Shiraz to while the night away!

We stayed four nights, Ewan gave us a late check out, we’ll be back soon!

We recently had an 8 night stay at "Seven Terraces" . It was like walking into a work of art. Although it is a hotel we felt we were visiting friends in a beautiful, antique filled mansion. The warmth of the staff from the management down made our stay so memorable. Special thanks to Ewan, Sean, Yunn, Jenny, Dinesh and my favourite barman, "Podi", who made the best cocktails - I was in cocktail heaven. The owners of the hotel , Chris and Karl, were there and we enjoyed our chats and it was easy to share their passion for their unique hotel. The restaurant "Kebaya" was a great experience from the delicious food, to the exotic decor, the talented piano player and the lovely maitre d' , Shirley.
