This is a typical south Indian style temple covered with carvings of gods and goddesses many of which are colourfully painted. It is in the Little India area of Georgetown and you can get to it easily by walking a few hundred yards down Chulia Street towards the ferry jetty. The area is only a few hundred yards square but consists of several streets full of Indian shops selling saris, Indian jewellery, hindi movies and CD's, and best of all restaurants serving delicious Indian food from banana leaves instead of plates. You can also get real Indian chai (spicy tea ) here, and Indian sweets such as barfi, gulab jamuns and laddhu. The temple itself makes a nice photo.

When attempting to visit in March 2014 there seemed to be some confusion. Locals said the temple was closed for renovations but we were within visiting hours. Bottom line we didn't get in but were still able admire the fantastically ornate, outside decorations, particularly on the roof. As compensation we did get to look at the many coin shops that operate on both sides of the temple. Had no idea that such an industry existed and the vast array of coins on offer was amazing

Must remove shoes before entering. Free entry. Beautiful temple inside walls. Good picture opportunities. Just outside the Central Market but you need specific directions because it's on a side street. You can get a map from the information counter in the Central Market and have the attendant explain it to you.

A holy place, not very big inside. Its always nice to visit holy places early in the morning. Donation is optional and there are metal container for donation inside the temple. Do not give to people outside the temple claiming to be for the temple.

Basic rules apply to all visitors to Hindu temples, Bath before visiting temples, at the temple leave your foot wear on the shoe rack outside the temple, wash your feet and hands and enter the temple. Its auspicious to move clockwise around the temple. Before aiming your camera, please ask permission from the temple staff. They allowed photography the last time I visited.
Hindu ladies will not visit temple during their periods and that applies to all ladies. if you do then its advisable for this ladies not to touch any statues or holy objects or even sit in the temple.
No offence ladies. We should respect the mother of all mothers by following this disciplines.

You will be blessed even if you pray from outside the main entrance of the temple.
God bless all.

A nice & colourful temple with a lot of carvings, only saw it from outside as our time was limited,it is the oldest Hindu temple in George Town. This Hindu Temple is dedicated to Sri Muthu Mariamman, it should be visited by non Hindus as well as there is so much to see.
