“Not worth it”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2013

Foreigners pay 30 RM (about US$10) for a ride on the cable car up to the top of Penang Hill. I would have turned back, but I had already taken a lengthy bus ride to the terminus, so was trapped.

Once at the top, there is not much to do. Just look at the views, and spend money at various cafes, and some place dealing in owls.

I didn't hang there for long, opting to take the steep 5 km path down to the botanical gardens.

“Thrilling ride up the hill”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2013

A salute, I paid only RM4, half price for senior citizen to get a ride up the hill. The view is terrific, one can see the sea and the Penang bridge clearly. Although there's not much attractions up there, the climate up there is much cooler. I think the gardens should need some improvement and add more food stalls. What impressed me most is the ride down, we sat right in front of the coach, the ride was exciting and thrilling.

“The view from the top is lovely”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2013

It is much cooler on the hill. Food is very reasonable at the food court but the view is much better at the expensive restaurant near the entrance. There are temples to visit and you can have tea on the veranda at the very outdated almost colonial (if you are half blind) hotel. Lovely way to spend an afternoon - definitely worth it.

“Worth a trip to the top”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2013

The cable car was quite fun, and definitely better than walking up the hill! The hotel at the top is really quite run down, and although it has great views, it is better to stop at the newer cafe called David Browns. The scones and tea were good! The climate is also much cooler up here, so very refreshing.

“Do it if you like trains”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2013

I love trains so the chance to ride a funicular train was a must do for me. Get your ticket and get in the boarding line early so you can ride in the space right beside the driver. The train cars have big windows in the front so the views are great. You can take some excellent pictures from that spot.

In addition to the ride up, you get some great scenic views overlooking Georgetown and the Malacca Strait. I will say though, try to pick a relatively clear day if you want to maximize the view and any pictures you take from on top of the mountain. If you don't, the haze will make the view not quite as beautiful.

In addition to the ride up and the view, there is a small Hindu temple (very ornate, as usual) and a small mosque.

Once at the top, there are eating places which have basic, but good, food at prices that are not as exorbitant as you often see at tourist spots. Right below the food court, the is an owl museum (yes, the one with the big eyes).

As another reviewer noted, there is a charge of MR30 (approximately US$10) for adults but that Malaysian citizens pay substantially less. This is true but, if you have traveled much, you already know that tourist places around the world have a tourist rate and a local rate. Guess which is lower. This is true at Penang Hill just as it is at Walt Disney World, most places in Galveston, Texas, or where I live in Thailand. Since I live there now, I get the local rate most of the time just by showing my Thai driver's license. With that in mind, pick the places that really call to you to visit them. Trains do that for me.

The easiest way to get to the train station is to take the No. 204 bus. You can get on at the
Komptar bus station (cost MR2) or anywhere along its route. (http://www.rapidpg.com.my/journey-planner/).
