We took grab car and stopped at the 4WD Penang Hill entrance. We are charged RM160 for 4-5pax/car. This is a good option as the tram queue can be very long and takes up to an hour. As for the car, there is no queue and you get to go up the hill offroad style. The road up to Penang Hill was very steep! Normal cars is not allowed, but if you go on a bicycle or on foot you are allowed to go in the gate. We were able to spot monkeys and big tall trees! The driver is experienced as he was able to manuever the car in a safe manner.

Wonderful experience! I have been to Penang hill quite often to bring my tourist friends but it has always improved everytime I come up! Especially when it's misty!

The ride up and back was a little scary and way too crowded. The views at the top were breathtaking but we found it all too touristy and pricey at the top. Everything at the top cost more money and was overpriced. Worth the trip for the views. The attractions were very much for the Asian tourist

Just got here June 25th 2018 and sitting on the HoHo and they just told us when we got here. You can still go via Botanical garden Jeep Tour so we might check that out tomorrow.

Established by the British as the first hill station in SE Asia, Penang Hill is now a tourist attraction, reached by travelling up on a funicular railway. The trip up the 833 metres is very fast and the air noticeably cools as you reach the top. There are museums and rides as well as the usual photo opportunities with snakes and birds. There are some food stalls here with a view back down the hill, but you can comfortably fit everything in over half an hour and then make the trip back down. Over the 20 years I have been visiting here I can only remember 2 or 3 times that you have actually been able to see the view without it being obscured by clouds. The biggest hassle is lining up for the trip up with it being a major tourist attraction. I recommend that you get here early before the tourist buses arrive. Even though there isn't a lot to see or do it is still worth including on your list of things to do in Penang.
