“Be ready for slow and hot tour.”
Reviewed 1 June 2012

Alex had a desire to visit the famous Blue House (Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion) and since Jason knew the scheduled tour hours, we arrived there 10 minutes before the tour. The tour was offered by a female docent who had a rather soft spoken voice and much information on the family and the house. The first room took about 30 minutes and there were two stories to visit.

With the midday heat, lack of ventilation, speed of the tour, and my bad hearing I decided it was time to duck out when the large group moved to room number two. Mindy decided to make the exit as well. I told my daughter I needed to use the restroom, which I did, and then found Jason and finished our smoke.

I was surprised by the many walk-up tourists that had to be turned away due to the limited tour hours. I thought the Pinang Peranakan house had a better system. Shortly after our smoke my daughter found me hiding in the shade with Jason and, of course, I was caught but she indicated she didn’t care to do the rest of tour and we decided we should eat before we went to the airport.

Dear 'oliver3Jaxon',

We do apologize for the heat. This is the tropics and as you might have noticed we have attempted to provide as many ceiling fans and stand fans as possible in all the rooms. We need to have designated tour hours (3 per day) in order to provide some privacy and quiet time for our in-house guests, which the other show-houses/museums do not have. Most visitors come for an interpretation tour with regards to history, architecture and cultural aspects like feng shui, all of which take a bit of time. We would also have many complaints if we rushed them through the house.
Thank you for your interest and again we apologise for any inconveniences inadvertedly caused.

Best Regards,
The Management of CFTM

It is an amazing experience to stay in a place that is crowded with tourists 3 times a day during a tour. It was not too busy however, since the wings with the guest rooms were not accessible for people who do not stay at the guest house.

The building is beautiful, the guards very friendly, and breakfast is good. Our room had an antique atmosphere that we really loved.

The building itself made this a really special stay. If you do not care about the special building, it might not be worth the money.

I recently stayed here for one night on a recent trip to George Town. The building was well restored, the staff very friendly and helpful including Daniel who arranged a taxi to pick me up from another hotel to take me to the airport. The rooms are quiet, clean and spacious and the breakfast is also highly recommended. You can also join one of the organised tours, for free, during the day which is also highly recommended to get the history of the museum.

Every time I have had the good fortune to stay at the Blue Mansion, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this gloriously restored house in its various moods: watching the evening light making the blue walls almost glow, sitting tucked in under the overhangs during a monsoon downpour, hearing the distant echoes of voices of other occupants in the late morning. It takes little imagination to cast oneself back to the days when the house was occupied by the extended family of Cheong Fatt Tze. As everyone has said, the staff is lovely and fantastically helpful (on my last stay they even boxed and mailed a box of things home for me so I would not have to take them on my homeward journey). By the way, if you are looking for five-star sameness, or spa-like chicness, stay away.

A note: I lived in Penang years ago when this mansion was a derelict ruin occupied by squatters. The transformation by the owners is stunning!

Room Tip: See the note on the food court next door. The owners are working on solving the problem. While anoth...

Dear 'Handmark',

Thank you for writing such a wonderful review! For us, there is no greater compliment than a guest who sees our home as their own and chooses to return whenever in Penang.

So many years of hard work and dedication have gone into the restoration and conservation of the house but it makes it all so worth it when a guest such as yourself is able to experience the magic that seems to be ingrained in these blue walls. I could not describe it better myself!

Thank you again for choosing to stay with us and we do hope that we'll see you again soon!

Till then.

This was my 4th stay and I will keep coming back. I love the experience of staying in such a beautiful mansion. The staff are great, welcoming and lowkey.Poh was charming, extremely helpful and accompanied us to some great local resturants. Fun nights. I recommend the staff arrange a trishaw ride around Georgetown for you and also a hertitage walk with an experienced walker. My only gripe is that there are too many tours of the mansion and too many people on those tours.

Room Tip: I have had the privledge of staying in the Enshoy room twice and it is well worth the extra expense...

Dear 'jennieT_11',

Thank you for taking the time to write this lovely TripAdvisor review although there is no greater compliment than guests who choose to return to our 'home' when in Penang.

We're pleased that you enjoyed the house, the food, the company and the tours of George Town. There are so many new (and old) things to see and do that there is always a reason to come back and explore.

Thank you also for your comments on the tours, we have thought about limiting the number of people but we don't like to turn people away when they have made the effort to come at specified times to see the house for themselves. However we will take this into consideration in the future should the numbers continue to grow.

Thank you again for choosing to stay with us and we'll see you soon!

I would recommend CFTM to anyone who is interested in how the wealthy expat Chinese community used to live in Penang. The house tour with JoAnn was extremely interesting (and house guests get to take photos afterwards but tour guests are not allowed). Poh was very helpful in arranging a great trishaw trip around Georgetown (get two trishaws if you are any larger than slim - we are average and it was a squeeze!). He also helped arrange a body massage in the room for my husband who had a sore back and shoulders (but not after the massage!). The breakfast a la carte was yummy and we really appreciated the home-made jams. There was an outside function on our first night and the noise does travel but it just gave the place more atmosphere and the karaoke did not last until too late! Plus the manager said we could help ourselves to their buffet (we didn't though). It is very well placed to walk out into Georgetown and find lots of delicious food and drink. Afternoon tea at the E&O a 5 minute walk away is a must! We stayed at CFTM for 2 nights but felt we could have stayed a bit longer to explore more of Georgetown. Yes, the house needs round-the-year care and attention but the faded bits just add to the charm. We will be back next year!

Dear 'Lucy B',

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to write this lovely TripAdvisor review! It always makes our day to read such positive comments.

We're very glad you enjoyed your stay and the tour of the house as well as the trishaw trip around George Town. It allows you to see another side of the city and it's much less tiring than walking! Although there is so much to see and do you should definitely come back again!

We definitely look forward to seeing you again next year!

Amazing and very enjoyable stay at the CFTM. Wonderfull, helpful staff accompanied by three lovely cats. Ask for a room away from the foodcourt next door as it tends to be a bit noisy at night. Also, arrange for a room on the ground floor, so you can enjoy sitting outside right outside your room (even when its raining). Sturdy iron bars on windows, so don't worry about leaving them open. Free complimentary water and juice in fridge. Take the informative tour (free for guests). Buy a watercolor of the hotel in the shop (open right after tours). Be amazed at the quickly filling-up central courtyard when it's raining (you will understand after taking the tour). Wonderful breakfast with decent whole grain bread (takes a bit of time, though, as the kitchen is in a separate building). Perfect feng shui. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Room Tip: Have a room on the ground floor away from the adjoining food court, and enjoy your small private ter...
