“Nice Surprise”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

I stayed here for 2 nights mid august and I have to say that I was quite surprised to find such a nice and well-priced hotel. I have stayed in hotels for twice the price but half the service.
The people at reception were super friendly and humble and the breakfast was perfect.
Before booking I had read about having to be careful with the prices and that they would charge you more than at first sight. This was not at all the case. You should note that you will have to pay an extra fee (3 MR per night or so), but that is clearly stated at reception.

I really can recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: The rooms facing the pool are super quiet. However, you should be prepared for people across the bui...

Quite luxurious in appearance, although like most things in Malaysia there could perhaps be a little more maintanance in some areas. Overall though very nice. Bit perplexed with the rear entrance but worked out ok once you start to negotiate the back streets. Bit dissapointed at the fact there was no white wine available in the bar. Enjoyed our stay.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Greetings to you from all of us at The Royale Bintang Penang!

First and foremost, thank you kindly for taking your valuable time to write this review during your recent stay at The Royale Bintang Penang.

We are very sorry about the white wine not being available and this matter has been brought up to the Food & Beverage Manager's attention. Apparently, the type of wine requested had ran out of stock. However we will make sure in future that we have sufficient par stock.

Feedback given on our shortcomings are very important especially from our guests which can only help us to improve and do better when it comes to service.

We hope this experience will not marr your impression of The Royale Bintang Penang as a whole.

Lastly, thank you once again for your kind patronage and we do hope your forthcoming visit will be more pleasant than anticipated.

Kind regards,

In 21/08 out 25/08. Yes am still staying there.
Check in on 21/08 @ 2100. Front desk staff very efficient and friendly. Got in the room and noted the room quite dim. Try to switch on more lights but to no avail. Called housekeeping but phone just kept on ringing. Called front desk for assistance and within 3 minutes, housekeeping showed up and noted nil ceiling lights, wardrobe light, dressing table and bed light all not serviceable. The matter was finally rectified in 30 minutes. Requested a bucket of ice to wash done a couple of drinks in the room and was promptly delivered.
Day 2
Gone out after breakfast and back to room at 1500. The room was not tidied up yet. Called housekeeping and nil answer as well. Called front desk and asked for assistance. Stepped out of hotel and return at 2100. To my disappointment, the empty bucket of ice and used glasses were still there. One fresh bath towel was left on the dressing table. Again ordered a bucket of ice.
Day 3
Room was done when return at 1700. Used bucket of ice was still there. Only replenished one hand towel. Tea and coffee not replenished.
Wondered what await for me on Day 4.

The facade of this hotel is impressive, but the entrance is down an alley and around the back. The lobby is low-ceilinged and seems cramped. Check-in was swift however, and my room was quite nice for the price. The desk was big enough to work at and wifi was free. The bathroom was nicely laid out and the shower was spacious, although there was no tub. The bed was comfortable, there were lots of pillows, and the air conditioning worked quietly and efficiently.

The pool in the interior courtyard is large enough for swimming laps, but is in shadow for parts of the day. A nice looking bar and lounge are located just off the lobby, and a pianist and singer perform there most nights, but almost no one is there to appreciate it.

The restaurant room is nice, with wide arches and white walls. But the breakfast buffet was meager. Maybe the good stuff was hidden away somewhere. I could find some fruit and bread and Indian food, but no bacon, eggs, or anything like that.

Service is enthusiastic and friendly, but not polished. The hotel appears to be fairly new. Maybe with time it will develop a style that will make it more attractive.

This recently opened hotel in the business district of Georgetown is excellent value, which can't last long. The liveried staff are geared to high end customers, but it was an easy place to enjoy. The pool! Real laps! Excellent breakfast options, great staff, large well-appointed room, a bit of luxury if you're more familiar with modest hotels.

Room Tip: Harbour views are pricey

although some reviews are negative .. I have only good things to say about this Hotel …….. 4 star is a worthy rating. The room I stayed in is excellent in every way … clean, spacious, and bathroom very efficient. Nice new towels and plenty of them …… generous complimentary toiletries … the bed is big enough to play cricket on and there is an iron and ironing board in the wardrobe. The staff try very hard and all have been pleasant ……. and efficient.
I am normally a 2 or 3 star visitor but must say the extra I paid here was certainly worth it. Really central to all George Town has to offer … definitely made this trip relaxing and enjoyable.

Slightly off the beaten track at a far corner of Georgetown nestles this "new" low-rise establishment that reminded me a little of Singapore's classy, nostalgic, grand dame Raffles Hotel and Penang's very own gem, the E&O Hotel.

Yes--the hotel's not-too-handsome entrance (and lobby) is oddly hidden off the main road, behind the General Post Office, but no one really cared about it after a day there. You'd get used to it, since getting a taxi is but a mere 10mins wait after ordering it at the Concierge rather than being touted by uncouth cabbies. You'd probably guessed that you would need a good 15mins' brisk walk to the nearest tourist site, Little India, under the blistering sun. Good guess.

Reception staff is ample. I had no trouble from the moment I checked into and out of Royale Bintang. My 70-odd year old parents (one of them wheelchair-bound) and I were greeted from moment we got off our airport transfer, ushered through the held-open front door, checked-in with smiles with a forewarning that an additional local tax levy upon departure was payable upon checking out--the amount of which was negligible, served our welcome drink and shown to our rooms by a very pleasant bell-boy, oh well, bell-man who happened to double as the Concierge that day. So, I don't quite understand why most other reviewers had so much trouble with the hotel staff. Maybe we were lucky to be serviced by experienced-enough hotel staff. Or, maybe we were courteous, patient and respectful of others, and didn't really expect much out of the reasonably-priced stay, which included a good breakfast spread.

The rooms were clean, spacious and gorgeous--kind of like the old meets new kind of feel. Bed was way comfortable--reminded me of the Hyatt's Heavenly Beds. Good centralised electronic controls. Bathrooms were clean, spacious and brightly lit. No trouble with the step-in rain shower. No trouble with the toilet. Zilch!

I was most happy with Alan, the bell-man cum Concierge or whatever he is was. He was a dear help to me and my parents, especially since I had to cart my wheelchair-bound mother around, and to pay close attention not to lose my faster-paced father. A good man.

I didn't use the pool, but it isn't the Olympiad if you are looking for a good exercise. Ample for a soak or a waddle, or a nice cuddle and kiss with your partner without fearing either of you would drown...

Yes--the service staff can be a little more experienced, rather than repeating what I had asked them without any real answer. But again, if you are patient towards the service staff and speak to them slowly--coupled with a smile, you would be amazed by the wealth of lcoal information that comes flowing out.

Enjoy your stay if you choose to stay at the Royale Bintang, Penang. My parents and I did.
