“Great Hotel, Great Location, Great Service”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

If you want to stay in a hotel which gives you a homely feel, right to the breakfast served, then this 8-room hotel is it. The minute you check in, the hospitality begins. Like a home, you have to leave your footwear downstairs and walk around barefoot. I kid you not when I say that you actually feel you’re at home. The person managing the hotel, Prema, and her 2 colleagues, Celeste and Nelson, take care of your needs. I don't think I ever heard them utter the word no. There’s always a personal touch. Celeste baked delicious bread and scones for us and when she found out that we might not have time for breakfast the next day, she served the scones for us to try the night before. My friends and I stayed in the loft room – big enough for 4 adults. It is a nice design and the stairs to the loft within the room do not creak. The only thing we had to get used to was that the toilet has a curtain for a door. The wifi in the room is a bit weak but its not a a major problem. The hotel is next to a mosque but the windows are thick enough for you not to be awakened by the prayer call if you want to sleep in. If you have kids, this hotel is perfect for you too. Remember, this hotel is on No, 5 Lorong Lumut – don't mistake it for another one elsewhere. The location is fantastic. There are very interesting shops and cafes nearby. One of the cafes you have to try is the Downtown Heritage Cafe (No. 149, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling). The food, drinks and service are fantastic. Try the Nasi Ayam Ketut -- the rendang is out of this world. Also, there’s a push-cart guy next to the café selling mee goring (fried noodle). We were told that he’s a 3rd generation cook. The mee goreng is amazing. A must try too!

Beautifully restored boutique hotel within walking distance of most attractions of the world heritage sites. Tall ceiling and comfortable bed offers much needed relaxation after a hard day of sight seeing and gourmet food tastings. Soft chants from the nearby mosque adds to the early morning ambience of the area. Our hostess Celeste was knowledgeable and went out of her way to make our stay a memorable experience. Double glazing could be installed to reduce traffic noise of street facing rooms, at the cost of reducing the old world charm of the property.

Spices Hotel as it is pretty well received by other guests.
This 1 year old BnB is a restored houses located in Lorong Lumut, near Armenian street, where it has became a tourist attractions.
Love the designed of the lobby with exposed bricks and a big swinging day bed waiting for you to chill. The room is pretty nice, and most of the amenities were provided. This is the most relaxing and beautifully renovated hotel I've ever stayed at anywhere in the world. The staff are incredibly friendly and the hotel is located close to good restaurants and in a quiet and safe street. I recommend this to anyone.

My wife and I stayed four nights in a loft room and would highly recommend this property. We were welcomed on arrival by Karen & Patti who made us feel very welcome and provided great service and good advice while we were there. Breakfast was good and there was always a cool drink or tea/coffee on offer when you returned. The property is within the UNESCO World Heritage area and is convenient to key attractions and to the bus depots if you want to go further afield. The only note of caution is the very step stairs if you are upstairs.

My husband and I stayed at Spices residence in early January for 4 nights. We had the Cinnamon Room. Which consisted of a sitting area down stairs which had a small table a sitting chair and a day bed type thing which I assume could be made into a bed and a good sized room upstairs. We chose to use the sitting room as a luggage storage and dressing room.
Pros: Two air-conditioner, one in the lounge area and one in the loft bedroom. Lovely little balcony, with enough room for two people to sit with a little table and two chairs. Good TV reception in bedroom. Great Breakfast, with home made preserves, toast, cereal, fruit, eggs any way and whatever is cooking at the little Indian hole in the wall next door. Staff!!!!!

Cons: bad wifi reception in room, much better in dining room and communal sitting areas. A curtain for a bathroom door this was my least favourite thing about the room. No fridge in the room. No power point next to a mirror for those who like to dry their hair or use a straightener and see what they are doing. A few mossies about.

There are a couple of sitting rooms that are well furnished with fans and comfy chairs, a bit of a library with some games etc where in the downstairs sitting room.

We basically had the place to ourselves, so it was very quiet. Not sure what it would be like if at full capacity, which is apparently 28 people, the dining room could really only cater 10 I think and with a lot of the doors to the rooms leading off one narrow hallway it could get a bit noisey.

The property has been lovingly and professionally renovated and it a pleasure to the eye. The staff Malcolm and Celeste where marvellous.

Would we go back again if staying in Penang: It would be a pleasure

Room Tip: The Cinnamon room was very comfortable for two people.

It's hard to explain just how wonderful our experience at Spices was. It exceeded our expectations in several ways. Spices is a beautifully restored heritage building, with common spaces that include little (and big!) surprises. My favorite involved the guesthouse's focal point: a graceful bodi tree strikingly framed against a mustard wall. The guesthouse aims to transport guests even further, with an enticing swing/day bed in the reception area and Turkish and Moroccan lamps and accents. Whoever designed the guesthouse paid great attention to detail and guest comfort. Prem, the manager, and the other staff are diligent, attentive, and friendly. They clearly care deeply about the guesthouse and really went out of their way to make us feel at home. Our room was pretty and very comfortable, with air conditioning and a rain shower. The neighborhood was fun to explore and within walking distance to most major sights. The only drawback to Spices at Lumut Lane was that it made us want to spend more time indoors, relaxing in its different spaces, rather than exploring the rest of Georgetown. If I were to go back, I would definitely try to stay longer.

Right away when you enter Spices at Lumut, you will realize the talent of an architect behind this beautiful renovation. Spices is composed of a series of shop-houses, some of them being over 100 years old, connected together to form an interesting 8-rooms home-stay. I was privileged to be given a tour by the (local) architect who designed this pretty place. I really liked that he kept some of the old trees that grow on the walls and through the roof (he explained that he had to reinforced the wall with steel structure to be able to maintain these trees). The place has a lot of natural light and air, which makes is a confortable haven after a long day in the streets of Penang.

Lorong Lumut is ideally located in the heart of a vibrant heritage district of Penang, close to Armenia street and its Kongsi (chinese temples). You will also hear the muezzin of a neighboring mosque singing at prayer times; what a mix of cultures! A great place to stay to enjoy the really Penang life.
