A memorial to the 1800 Australians and 600 Brits who died in a comparatively untold, but particularly chilling chapter of WWII, the Sandakan to Ranau death marches. Set in a fortress-like construction on a hill, it is appropriately well maintained, full of personal touches and features separate Australian, British and Bornean grottos, and a long porticoed garden with all the names of the dead. As an aside, the view from the terrace over the valley towards the mountain is sensational. Ask to watch the video, a 20 minute feature from Aus channel 9, including brief history and interviews with two of the six survivors. The one annoyance was the insensitivity of some visitors, loudly taking posed photos, apparently oblivious to the setting. 10RM entry for non-Malay adults is nothing to see an immensely moving memorial to an important part of Borneo's WWII history.

This was an easy stop on the way back from Poring Hot Springs.
This is a very good memorial set amongst 3 gardens, English, Australian and Borneo. The story and list of names are very moving.

It is located in Kundasang that is famous for its cool climate and vegetables or fruits. This place has a big compound with beautiful gardens, landscapes and flowers. There an Information Centre here that keeps all the mementos and some individual accounts about the Death March. There are numerous resorts, homestays and lodges that are great for holiday getaway.
