“An Escapade”
Reviewed 8 October 2012

Guided by a local tour guide, I went to Pulau Mantanani alone - together with a boat of foreign tourists. The journey began with an hour drive from Kota Kinabalu to Kota Belud jetty followed by a 45-minutes 'crocodile' ride. It was pouring half of the journey and the current was rough. I could see neither island nor other boats in the middle of the sea. It was the longest 45 minutes in my life.

The fear vanished the moment approaching an island. All I could see was the cleanest sea I have ever seen and a sandy white beach. That very moment, I know that I will have no regrets in my life setting foot on this isle. We snorkelled in two areas: one with breathtaking choral reefs beneath us and another with lotsa fishes (with 20 metres depth). The guide even showed us Nemo near the shore of the island.

During lunch time, we were served with scrumptious buffet lunch. I made friends with an Australian, Koreans and Chinese nationals.

In short, this’ certainly one of the most memorable tours in my entire life. The crystal clear sea is simply irresistible and I have since back to my life for 3 weeks by now. I just wish I were still there.

“An island almost all to yourself...”
Reviewed 11 September 2012

pick an off season to visit Sabah, and take a trip to Mantanani Island...

It has almost clear blue water and the beach is still clean... its hard to find that these days...

I stayed at a basic chalet in a resort facing South China Seas... it was basic and not for the timid traveler.. :D

If you can handle the basic chalet, the island and seas will keep you wanting to come back for more... :D

“relaxing in the sun”
Reviewed 8 April 2012

A beautiful island to wander along the beach with, The sea wasnt as blue as I thought it would be, alot of the coral that the tourists are invited to snorkel & dive to has cause quite alot of damage, though the beach is sandy you still have to be careful where you put your feet. Our friend Lynn at the Riverbug service station made sure that we had appropriate accommodation. We hade our own amenities though our shower didnt have a sprinkler we still had water for a shower. The food was good as a visitor make sure that the cook knows of any special foodvariations. Our journey to the island took about an hour, was very rough so remember seasickness tablets! We stayed the night, our organiser made sure that we had a mosquito net as it was so hot - remember net & mosquito repellent. Not all rooms have their own WC o shower. some have to share. For relaxing & getting away from city lifr this is a good place to be

“Wow! Breathtaking...”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

It was meant as a busniess trip but in the end we made friends with the locals. The island is still unspoilt and worth the 45-min (per way) boat ride at the open sea! The water is so clear that you can see a school of small fishes swimming near the shore. Not many places to stay but our host arranged for a local person to cook lunch for us. And the fish was fresh from the sea! Fantastic meal!

But if you are not a good traveller, probably want to pop some seasickness pills. The boat rides can be quite nightmarish....choppy seas if there are strong wind or heavy rain. Anyway, the rides are worth it once you see the island...bliss...

“Sabah Hideaway”
Reviewed 13 December 2011

I had been to the Mantanani Island in Sept 2011. It is a lovely island that simply cannot be missed whenever you have a chance to visit Sabah! I will be there again and spend a night next time when I re-visit Sabah.
