“Avoid at all costs”
Reviewed 10 September 2009

This is the fourth of the Tune franchise I've stayed at. Having had a great time at the Kuching branch prior to this, I was appalled at the KK "hotel". What the other reviewers say about the location is true - it's far from town, at a horrid shopping mall with no soul. The shuttle from 1Borneo to the city (provided by the mall) takes about 30 minutes to get to the city. Both Tune and Novotel try to hide the distance issue on their respective website. If you want to shop and do nothing else, perhaps it is a good spot (but why bother?). The room itself was shabby. The bed and bedding were very comfortable, but the walls had cracks and gaps where plaster had fallen out, the light fixtures next to the bed were hanging off their hinges and taped up - the switches had fallen into the cavity behind the bed head. In terms of facilities - none. Well, there's an overpriced 7/11 and a Gloria Jeans coffee cart. If you want any decent breakfast before say 10am you have NO chance - nothing at 1Borneo opens before 10am. And the halls STANK of burnt oil/sewerage. A horrid experience. Plus the staff are surly, a taxi from the airport costs about RM50 (or if like me you arrived at midnight, RM75). The only good thing is the transit office - the lady there was really friendly and arranged a private transfer back to the airport for RM35. Incidentally - if you do stay there, the shuttle leaves from the North Atrium of 1Borneo. Tune staff were unable to explain where it was and the shopping centre (for a "Hypermall" has NO guides/maps!)/

First of all the hotel IS NOT in Kota Kinabalu, in fact its completely the opposite direction.
Basically there is a mall and attached to it is this hotel.

Check in:
Dont even waste your time trying to get an early check in, 2pm end of story. But for 2rm they will keep your bags. I left a laptop, high def camera and it was all still there when i picked them up.

Room:
A midget would be cramped. The rooms are miniscule! The beds genuinely are comfy and 5 star as the hotel likes to proclaim, the 'power showers' are nothing more than drips of water in 5 minute intervals, seriously my 4 year old daughter would have more power spitting out water than the showers.
For a supposedly new hotel the paint was flaking off the walls and the fan is about as much use as my ex wife.
I paid 12rm for the wifi which broke down about 10 minutes later. I went for my money back and the hotel do not offer refunds. I moaned and moaned and eventually i was allowed to use the admin wifi in the lobby.

Location:
This is what the hotel keeps quiet, it is 50 ringitt from the airport, the cartel charge ridiculous amounts, so a return journey is 100rm, factor this into your plans.
Also, apart from the mall there is nothing at all. No beach, no pool - nothing.

I paid about 17gbp per night and wasn't annoyed, when you consider the taxi prices, add ons of wifi, towels etc.. i probably paid far more for a budget hotel than i would have for a decent one.
Its not a great hotel by any strectch of the imagination, but its not bad either. The location and add ons really let the place down. If it was located at the airport or in KK it would be fine.
But its not.

I went with a group of friends to KK. Unfortunately the hotel is 10 km far away the center and (very strange) offers a shuttle bus only until 5 pm which mean you cannot go to Kota Kinabalu for dinner unless you get a taxi.
We asked for a transfer in the morning and they overpriced the transfer (we found a better solution in the 4 stars hotel next door).
Comparing to the other Tune Hotels in Kuching and KL it is definitely worst.

The hotel is 10km from KK but this fact is kept very low key until you get there.
The 5 star sleeping experience, i was told by the receptionist, applies to the bed - not to the torn bed cover and sheets, not to the complete lack of shelves for clothes, not to the misleading blurb about being strategically located, not to the bedside lamps that were not working.
The hotel is in Likas - a new town still being developed. The new mall next door is half empty ... this "strategic" location applies to some time in the future, not now.
Oh ... the TV only gets 3 Malay language stations! But you don't know this before you pre-book it and you cannot get a refund.
It is fine if you don't expect too much ... cheap and clean. And yes ... the bed IS comfortable, but not 5 star!!!! It is rather small for 2 persons.

We came here by the free shuttle bus from the city. 1Borneo shopping centre is gigantic, Tune is just one of the hotels attached to it. I strongly objected when my friends wanted to spend an unplanned night here as walk-in rate was very expensive at >RM80/night without any add-ons.

The receptionist was professional & spoke fluent English. He gave us the card key even though it was about half an hour prior to the official check-in time of 2pm.

Stepping out of the elevator is a card key activated magnetic door. The mechanism was apparently damaged, so anyone can enter (security breach). Instead of nice painting you find in a typical hotel, the corridor here is filled with advertisements, which was rather annoying.

After some effort unlocking the door, we found ourselves in total darkness. No lights, no fan! That's right, because it is not check-in time yet. So, we left our luggage behind & went shopping. The mall is as huge as the Mid-Valley Mega Mall in Kuala Lumpur.

It was later that we realized how small the room was. There were even advertisements on the wall; a sealed window with no views; toilet door with no lock. The so-call Power Shower is pure rubbish, nobody would even consider it to be "high pressure".

To be fair to them, ceiling fan was powerful & quiet; bathroom was considered rather clean. Bed was comparable to some 5-star hotels, as advertised. But that's about it, the room is so hot & stuffy that I had to open the door to let the cool air in from the corridor! I barely managed to catch 3-hours of sleep, absolutely horrendous experience. I wouldn't stay here ever again even if they pay me to.

I booked 4 nights at the Tune Hotel in 1Borneo Kota Kinabalu for RM 73, inclusive of 24 hours air cond. Upon quoting the "T2" promotion code which I spotted at the airport I got another 12 hours of air cond for free, which was good.

The staff was really friendly. I thought they would be extremely stict about the check in time and that they would not let me check in since I was half an hour early but they had no problems with that. Check in was quick-- just produce your identity card or passport.

The room itself was overall good. The bed is really comfy, clean sheets, certainly as they advertised. The power shower is amazing and I really enjoyed it-- it's rare to find good showers at budget places. The large mirrors give off an air of something abit more than just your usual backpacker haunt... but the loose fittings and shoddy workmanship gave it away. The tap on the sink wobbles and the wires of the (otherwise very classy) LCD tv were showing and so was some plaster on the walls. There was also a huge crack in the wall opposite the bed.

Tune hotel is situated in 1Borneo, a big shopping mall. It can be a good or bad thing. if you're looking for local food, you might not like it as all they have are chain restaurants in the shopping mall. If you want the authentic experience you might be better off in the city centre or be willing to pay transport fees or rent a car. 1Borneo is rather out of the way and costs twice as much (by taxi) to go to as compared to the city centre.

I checked online, looking into the possibility of booking another stay but the prices were almost that of Kinabalu Daya Hotel which made it not worth it. So, basically, look into the other options before you pay for this place, in the end all the add ons might come up to what you would have paid for a hotel anyway. But if you get a good deal like I did, go for it! It's absolutely worth it!

Wi-fi here is pretty slow by the way. Walls are also not very soundproof-- I could hear my neighbour's tv and kids screaming down the corridor. A bit annoying.
