“Strange entrance via shopping centre public toilet to enter lift?”
Reviewed 16 December 2010

Apart from the weird entrance to the hotel, we enjoyed our stay and loved the access to the free shuttle to town, and the proximity to 1 Borneo shops with associated cheap prices and bargain food close-by. The hotel staff were helpful and knowlegeable. Our adjoining rooms were not very well maintained, or clean but we pay around 20 ringit per night and our expectations were met. Not up to LCCT, KL City's Tune or even close to Tune Penang or Kuching for room quality but the 1 Borneo shopping centre made it a worthwhile stay.

I've travelled over 1000km's with AirAsia on a return flight costing me less than RM20. So when I booked a room with Tune Hotel,3 months in advance, I was expecting a really yummy deal with them too, since everyone knew that the person helming Tune Hotel was the same person behind AirAsia's great, success story. Well, it turned out to be somewhat weird experience for me though. The Tune branch that I spent a few good nights at was the one within 1 Borneo, in Kota Kinabalu. Weird in the sense, it was full of surprises, not just from the positive end but also those bad ones. For a start, the room that I stayed in had large, visible cracks on its wall and the plaster ceiling finish was also peeling off rather badly, those that are hanging by its nail, you know it'll drop off any moment. Yet, that very same room had this gigantic mirror from the wall skirting right up to the ceiling, something you'll never find in hotels within the same price range. And when I mean same price range, I'm referring to the RM80-RM100 range. You'll go no where with the basic RM40-RM50 price range, since it's without the aircon, toiletries, wifi...etc.
Even the TV, which cost RM6.90 for a 24 hour credit usage, is limited to national tv channels only. Wow, and I thought Astro was pretty much standard. Then again, I was pretty glad that they had this eletronic safety deposit box in the room, as it really came in handy. The cosmetic, swing mirror in the bathroom to view you hair on the back of your head was also a pleasant surprise. Curtains were reasonably thick, able to shield the sunlight from the disturbing me up from my sleep. Cleanliness was average, nothing really to shout about. Didn't like the 'Tune Hotel' sticker on the bathroom door though, way overpromoting the brand IMHO, as if they were too scared their guests didn't know they were staying in 'Tune Hotel'.

All in all, it's a "reasonably, weird, expensive budget hotel".
Oh yeah, did I mention the check-out time is at 10am and the lift to the rooms are actually 'outside' of the hotel lobby. Plus, the toilet doors can't be locked and is transparent at some parts. Well, kind of hard to describe it in words, and last but not least, 'Good Luck'!

Hi There,

Thank you for sharing your feedback from your recent stay at Tune Hotels- 1Borneo, Kota Kinabalu.

We appreciate the level of detail you went into and take note of the comments you have made.

Your input regarding our room with a crack wall and the marred plaster ceiling finish has been forwarded to the relevant team for their attention and action.

We are a Limited Service Hotel. Therefore, we provide the basics for a good night sleep. We do not provide items such as wardrobe, mini bar, coffee and tea making facilities, extra pillows, extra beds, room service, etc. Air-conditioning, Television, and Wi-Fi are chargeable add-ons and towels are on rental basis only. This typically allows our customers to assemble their stay requirements to suit their budget.

We adopt a demand based pricing mechanism. Room rates fluctuate based on demand and room availability. You are more likely to find more promo room rates during off peak periods than during peak periods (public holidays, weekends, etc).

We have always endeavored to provide the best within our limited service concept.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about our hotel we are glad that you enjoyed the other parts of your stay and hope that we will have the sincere pleasure of welcoming you back soon.

Rooms were clean and although small, were absolutely worth the price, staff organised mt kinabalu tour for us, even though we arrived late (flight was delayed), and tour had already left, they organised another driver promptly. AC/internet worked fine (add-ons). Safe for solo travellers. Convenient location, right near shops etc.

Ok let me put it this way, If you are looking for a relatively nice / luxurious hotel ... then this is not for you. If you are looking for a cheap, somewhat like within a hostel price range, then again this is not for you.

Tune hotel is located approx.25-30 minutes away from Terminal 2 airport (around MYR50 from airport to tune hotel = P750 Philippine Pesos) . Just a note that There are two airports being Terminal 1 and 2. It is not in the downtown area as this is a somewhat "a not so suburb area" located amongst 3 other hotels (Courtyard hotel, Novotel and Grand Borneo). All of these hotels including Tune hotel are just beside each other and a big shopping mall is within the area so this means that access to food (a mix of malay , japanese, american fastfoods -- KFC, McDonalds etc), grocery, clothing, etc. etc. is within reach. A haven for shopaholics indeed!!

Now, about the Tune hotel ... I would say that this hotel is relatively nice and decent hotel to stay for a short vacation. The room where me and my siblings stayed were big and comfortable. The bed is truly one thing they can say its worth the price. As I have said, this is not a fancy hotel with 5-star amenities but really good enough to rest for the night after a day long tour around the city and the islands. The bathroom is clean, shower is great with hot water (though you have to purchase towels & kit as they are not a free item that comes with the price! I find it fair though, since having less towels to wash would mean lesser chemicals of soap being used -- thus, saving mother earth...)

Aircon usage are to be purchased in increments of 12 or 24 hours -- not a bad idea too for "Going Green" concept. There is a ceiling fan that you can use in case you run out of aircon bill. Just a note that our rooms doesnt have any windows at all! For claustrophobics -- this hotel is not for you!!

I would say that having stayed in this hotel from July 5 - 7 2010 -- was such a wonderful experience. And by the way, I have to mention that inside the hotel next to 7-eleven is a travel agency (the name of the agency is: EXTRA rent a car Sdn. Bhd.) that has very reasonable tour rates as compared to other agencies around. Booking our tours with Ms.Vivian was indeed worth every penny. And not to mention how HONEST their drivers are!!! We checked out on July 7 morning for an island tour and at the end of our tour at around 2:30pm, we requested our tour driver to bring us to Tanjung Aru where we will be staying for the next two nights in another hotel. When we were all dropped off in Tanjung Aru, I found out that I left my wallet with a few Malaysian Ringgit (around MYR86.00) and several important credit and identification cards inside the van! We called Ms. Vivian of the Travel agency and have asked our tour driver to go back and return the wallet to me without a penny or card lost!!! Isnt this amazing??? To you, our tour driver, my sincerest gratitude and appreciation for your honestly! Hats off to you my friend!!

The best thing about this hotel is that, they have a FREE shuttle service that brings you to downtown and back to the hotel at cetain time frames. So going to downtown is hassle free except that you just really have to check your time for the schedules. 10:00pm is the last hour that brings guests from downtown back to the hotel. Saving you a great deal of MYR30 everytime you go to the city proper by taxi.

So pack your bags and enjoy your trip!!

Thank you for sharing your feedback from your recent stay at Tune Hotels- 1Borneo, Kota Kinabalu

Our hotel operates on a limited service concept, parallel to a “pay as you use concept”

Apart from the advantage of affordable prices, this concept is adopted primarily to support “Less Waste, More Earth”, which typically encompasses energy –consuming facilities such as air-conditioning, TV entertainment packages, laundered towels and other amenities. It allows guests to tailor their stay to their preferences whilst conserving the environment and their hard-earned cash, since most travelers bring along basic essentials such as towels and soaps.

We appreciate all of the positive feedback about our hotel and your support towards concept

Tune Hotels- 1Borneo, is situated in the largest shopping and lifestyle mall in east Malaysia, the 1Borneo Hypermall.

The hotel is located approximately 15 minutes from the city centre, and is also en-route to major Kota Kinabalu eco-attractions, including Kinabalu Park - World Heritage Site and home of Mount Kinabalu, South-East Asia’s highest peak.

This hotel is 6 kilometres to Gaya Street near the Central Business District of Kota Kinabalu City. Gaya Street used to be known as Bond Street. The street transforms to a mega fair every Sunday morning and you could find almost anything at the Fair. From local handicrafts, souvenirs and clothing to food, drinks, Chinese medicines, delicacies and even animals like chickens and pet dogs, can be purchased for very reasonable prices. It also is a good opportunity to try out your bargaining skills.

The aquarium and science discovery centre Green Connection is 10 kilometres away. The Green Connection Aquarium is designed as an eco-theme park where you could find a display of over 500 species of of marine life, including sharks and snakes found in Sabah.

Some other places that might be of your inerest is the Handicraft Market which is about 8 kilometres from the hotel. You could find myriad wooden masks and wall panels, while The Monsopiad Cultural Village that features cultural shows relating to the Kadazan-Dusun culture is only 6.6 kilometres away from our hotel as well.

We are fortunate to have a great uptown location, thank you for your time and we hope to welcome you back soon.

Warm Regards,
Sharon- Customer Care

We stayed only for one night in this branch of Tune hotel in 1Borneo KK. I was expecting the hotel to be at par with the Tune Hotel near LCCT, KL. I was disappointed. The price is cheap however, the quality of the room and cleanliness is way below. First, the aircon is very slow in cooling the room. You need to turn on the ceiling fan to be able to cool the room. The toilet floor and wall is moldy and not properly cleaned. The painting on the walls are deteriorating already considering that it is a new hotel. The access to the hotel rooms is thru the mall and unfortunately, the staff did not mentioned to us that the main door of the hotel will open only if we use your room cards. We have to go around the mall and asked some mall staff on how to gain entrance to the hotel.

Luggage storage will cost you RM2 per luggage which is a rip off. The only consolation we have is that the local shuttle operator office inside Tune offers cheaper options for transport to the airport at around RM35 against taxi which charges you RM50.

Tune hotel is good alternative only for cheap accomodations otherwise, stay near the city center hostels.

True to their word - It was no frills, cheap, yet clean and great place. Amenities like TV, Aircon, towels are add-ons if you wanna pay for them. Ceiling fan is free. All their Beds are King Koil (Tune special) queen size. Right next to largest modern shopping mall in Borneo - there's also a hyperrmart (Giant) and a Cineplex. Little out of place though, but a free shuttle service between town and 1Borneo was provided for hotel guests. They can store your luggage if you are checking out and going some place (ed climb Mt Kinabalu). Costs RM 2 per piece per day. What more can one ask for? Book online now!
